Dusty Cone Holds Off Collins and Whitener at Waycross
|
By Jack Smith

The United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series made their only scheduled appearance at Waycross Motor Speedway Saturday night. Twenty-nine late models were on hand, and twenty-six took the green flag after 4 heat races were run.

The heat races were dominated by top starting spots, wins going to Scott Johnson, Johnny Collins, Keith Tuton and Mark Whitener.

A high speed weekend of Georgia racing starts Thursday, and we’re getting the newletter out early. It’s also a little shorter this week.
The O'Reilly Southen Nationals are at Hartwell Speedway on Thursday. This series, organized by popular driver Ray Cook, runs 10 races in 13 days in five states, and pays $3500 to win ($5300 weekends).
Racing started in Virginia Mon., with 2007 Series Champion Chris Madden winning at Wythe Raceway and 2007 runner-up Dennis 'Rambo' Franklin second. 29 cars were there.

The ASCS winged sprint cars are at Dixie Speedway in Woodstock Saturday for $2000 to win 25-lap feature. The series has gone to a pill-draw format, eliminating qualifying, using two or three heats, plus a redraw for the top eight, to set the feature starting order.
The favorite to win is series points leader Kenny Adams, of Malabar, FL, who has won four the nine ASCS features in 2008, and he has three career wins at Dixie. Adams recently won the $4,000 first place prize in the 3rd Annual URC Rislone Sprint Nationals at Williams Grove (PA) Speedway -...

A big two weeks coming up on the tracks, starting with Boyd’s Grand Re-Opening Friday with the Advance Auto Parts Thunder Series super LMs, a big field of UDLMC LMs Saturday at Golden Isles, and two features - Top Track crates and Supers - at Rome Sunday. Dixie and Rome both shoot off their fire works a week early.
Next week Fort Payne has their first major NeSmith LM show, the GAS Series takes on Peach State, and Lanier has one of their Super Six pro late model shows. There’s fireworks everywhere too.
Be sure to look down at the end for a suggestion to Birmingham’s problem.

The internet rumor mill roared this week with a story that two partners (incl. a former track announcer) were buying Lavonia Speedway, which has been for sale since last fall. A price of $600,000 was mentioned. Brad York has leased the track this year, and has had some successes.
Lanier Speedway owner Donnie Clack also owns Lavonia, and he said this week that several groups have looked at the track, but no offer and no deposit has been received.
Lavonia hosts the Carolina Clash super LM tour Friday.
