While only one race remains for each class in Atlanta Motor Speedway's 2010 Thursday Thunder season, two divisions have tight points races:
John Holleman, of Winston-Salem, NC, holds a six-point advantage over Madeline Crane of Meansville in the Morley Company Outlaws. Holleman utilized a win and fourth-place finish in week nine's races to surpass Crane in the standings.
William Plemons III and Jacob Armstrong enter Championship Night tied atop the Dixie Home Crafters Semi-Pro standings, while Luke Behnke trails behind by a mere six points. Plemons, a Smyrna resident who is competing in his first full Thursday Thunder season since 1998, claimed a win during week nine's double features to leap from fourth in the standings.
Fans can also take part in the second Belly Flop Contest of the season. Featuring big bellies and a small pool, a group of Thursday Thunder fans will be selected to participate in a mini-pool Belly Flop Contest.
Tickets are just $5 for adults and $1 for children 6-11 (ages 5 and under are free). Gates open at 6 p.m., heat races start at 6:15 p.m., and feature races start at approximately 7:50 p.m. www.atlantamotorspeedway.com

Atlanta Motor Speedway's 13th week of the Friday Night Drags season will feature 15 classes of high-speed racing on the pit-lane drag strip, and double points. With only five points races remaining and having competitors clustered atop the points standings, tension is expected on the track as competitors battle for needed points. In addition to the drag racing, the event will also include the weekly Show-N-Shine car show with six classes of show cars, a President's Choice and Student Choice awards.

Atlanta Motor Speedway's Labor Day weekend celebration has grown to four days with the addition of Breakfast on Bruton, a free Monday-morning breakfast for fans attending the prior night's NASCAR Sprint Cup race at the fabled 1.54-mile speedway.
The breakfast will be served on Monday, Sept. 5, in the NASCAR Nationwide Series garage area from 7:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. For a $30 donation to the Speedway Children's Charities, those in attendance will also be able to drive their own vehicles around the 1.54-mile oval.
Breakfast on Bruton event sponsors include Bimbo Bakery, Coca-Cola, Minute Maid, Dixie Paper Products, Wheaties FUEL, the Georgia Egg Commission, Southerland Foods, Land-O-Lakes, and OCP Angus Farms. www.atlantamotorspeedway.com

After their Grand Opening was rained out Saturday, Needmore Speedway, in Norman Park, GA, will open for the first race Saturday, Aug. 14. It's a 3/8's mile dirt, 90 ft. wide, banked 9 to 11 degrees all around. It's located seven miles west of I-75, at exit 49 (that's 49 miles north of the FL state line).
They have had two practices with a good turnout of cars and fans.
For opening night, the late model race will pay $3000 to win, and the limited will pay $1000 to win. $500 to win in other classes.
Counts (unofficial) before the rain-out: 129 cars signed in, 6,000 people.

Phillip Swofford, of Bremen, the new leasee and promoter at West Georgia Speedway in Whitesburg, has given the track a facelift, painting everything and upgrading the bathrooms, and his first show is Friday.
Swofford has been involved with sportsman class racing in recent years, and his McKenzie Auto Parts has had a parts trailer at area tracks for the past two years.
He's making West Georgia into a Friday night track, and will have divisions and rules similar to Saturday night at nearby Senoia: late models, mod minis, hobby, B-cadet, pur mini, and enduro street stocks. He hopes to include a crate class too.
West Georgia was the loser when Senoia went to dirt this year. A low fan and car count led to a cut in the purse one Sat. night. The next week only five cars showed, and the track never recovered, even after trying a switch to Friday nights.
As a sign, Swofford posted on Facebook: "Want to let all the drivers and fans know that the restrooms will be cleaned every week and in working order. Will be taking pics of improvements to the track over the next 3 weeks before we reopen and posting them on facebook ... no more intermissions"

"Earlier this week, the Associated Press reported that NASCAR has fined two drivers for speaking negatively about what's going on in the sport. In other words, the drivers went from being told "Boys, have at it" to "Boys, just be quiet."
"The drivers being able to speak their minds has been one of the focal points of the sport. To suddenly decide they are no longer allowed to do that has me wondering just why NASCAR suddenly can't deal with the same criticism they've received over the lat 60-plus years."
- Brandon Reed, www.Georgia Racing History.com

Earl Grubbs, a Malden (MO) Speedway employee was killed Friday night when his ATV flipped as he push-started a car during a consolation race, halting the Comp Cams Mid-South Racing Association event. He was a long-time track worker and 64 years old. The Late Model driven by Daniel Waters was stalled during the consolation race and Grubbs used the ATV he was riding to push-start the car. The ATV became hooked to the cars rear bumper on the backstretch and when the car towing the ATV fired and then picked up speed into turn three, Grubbs was violently thrown to the track surface.
"The four-wheeler was hooked to the bumper and when he entered turn three, it threw him off and knocked him out, but the four-wheeler landed on him. It was a sad, sad deal," said flagman Chris Ellis. (from www.DirtonDirt.com)

There are few races Ronnie Johnson, of Chattanooga, enjoys winning more than the Michael Head Jr. Memorial. And he certainly gets a lot of practice at it, winning again Saturday at Talladega Short Track for his third victory in the Southern All Star-sanctioned event in the past four years and fourth time overall.
Johnson started fourth, jumped into the lead on the outside in the early laps and cruised to a $5,400 victory at the third-mile oval for his series-leading 61st career triumph in the 13th annual event. "Mike (Head) and I have been very good friends for a lot of years and we've had our share of on-track battles, too," Johnson said. "I can remember when his son Michael was coming to the tracks with him and helping to work on the race cars, and this race has always meant a lot to me. Winning it four times is even more special."
Reigning track champion Tim Busha, of Boaz, AL, took the runner-up spot from polesitter Stacy Holmes of Munford, Ala., with six laps remaining to finish second, while Holmes settled for third.

D. J. Vanderley claimed his 5th win of the season Friday night at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola. Bubba Pollard, of Senoia, finished the night in third.

In his first start at Iowa Speedway, Chase Elliott dodged a first-lap wreck and went on to score a top-five finish in the fog-shortened USAR Pro Cup Series Blue Ox 150.
Elliott's next event will be the fourth pair of races in the Sunoco Gulf
Coast Championship at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola and Mobile International Speedway August 13th and 14th. Elliott currently leads the series points.

Adult fans can see both the August 14 GMP Pro Late Model program and the August 28 NASCAR K&N Pro Series East event for just one low price - $30. The discount off - a full 25 percent off the two events - is good through Thursday, August 12 and is available only on the GMP web site at www.greshammotorsportspark.ticketforce.com/

Poor rules make for poor racing.
There was a good deal of yellow flags today. Almost all were from spins. There were no serious accidents beyond the numerous spinouts. The flagman was quick to throw the yellow flag. There was no 'one spin and you're out rule'. The drivers recognized this. Whenever they 'lost it' or someone else 'turned them' they waited for the yellow flag to be shown and then moved back on the track.
You can't really blame the drivers for this behavior. If the track had better rules, there would be far fewer delays. Fewer delays mean happier fans. However, some tracks 'get it' and many 'don't'. That probably isn't going to change anytime soon. - Trackchaser Randy Lewis (only 190 US tracks remaining) www.randylewis.org
