Phillip Swofford, of Bremen, the new leasee and promoter at West Georgia Speedway in Whitesburg, has given the track a facelift, painting everything and upgrading the bathrooms, and his first show is Friday. Swofford has been involved with sportsman class racing in recent years, and his McKenzie Auto Parts has had a parts trailer at area tracks for the past two years. He's making West Georgia into a Friday night track, and will have divisions and rules similar to Saturday night at nearby Senoia: late models, mod minis, hobby, B-cadet, pur mini, and enduro street stocks. He hopes to include a crate class too. West Georgia was the loser when Senoia went to dirt this year. A low fan and car count led to a cut in the purse one Sat. night. The next week only five cars showed, and the track never recovered, even after trying a switch to Friday nights. As a sign, Swofford posted on Facebook: "Want to let all the drivers and fans know that the restrooms will be cleaned every week and in working order. Will be taking pics of improvements to the track over the next 3 weeks before we reopen and posting them on facebook ... no more intermissions" Questions: 678.796.3366 mckenracing@yahoo.com http://www.facebook.com/pages/Whitesburg-GA/West-Ga-Speedway/350483400717

"Earlier this week, the Associated Press reported that NASCAR has fined two drivers for speaking negatively about what's going on in the sport. In other words, the drivers went from being told "Boys, have at it" to "Boys, just be quiet." "The drivers being able to speak their minds has been one of the focal points of the sport. To suddenly decide they are no longer allowed to do that has me wondering just why NASCAR suddenly can't deal with the same criticism they've received over the lat 60-plus years." - Brandon Reed, www.Georgia Racing History.com

Earl Grubbs, a Malden (MO) Speedway employee was killed Friday night when his ATV flipped as he push-started a car during a consolation race, halting the Comp Cams Mid-South Racing Association event. He was a long-time track worker and 64 years old. The Late Model driven by Daniel Waters was stalled during the consolation race and Grubbs used the ATV he was riding to push-start the car. The ATV became hooked to the cars rear bumper on the backstretch and when the car towing the ATV fired and then picked up speed into turn three, Grubbs was violently thrown to the track surface. "The four-wheeler was hooked to the bumper and when he entered turn three, it threw him off and knocked him out, but the four-wheeler landed on him. It was a sad, sad deal," said flagman Chris Ellis. There are few races Ronnie Johnson, of Chattanooga, enjoys winning more than the Michael Head Jr. Memorial. And he certainly gets a lot of practice at it, winning again Saturday at Talladega Short Track for his third victory in the Southern All Star-sanctioned event in the past four years and fourth time overall. Johnson started fourth, jumped into the lead on the outside in the early laps and cruised to a $5,400 victory at the third-mile oval for his series-leading 61st career triumph in the 13th annual event. "Mike (Head) and I have been very good friends for a lot of years and we've had our share of on-track battles, too," Johnson said. "I can remember when his son Michael was coming to the tracks with him and helping to work on the race cars, and this race has always meant a lot to me. Winning it four times is even more special." Reigning track champion Tim Busha, of Boaz, AL, took the runner-up spot from polesitter Stacy Holmes of Munford, Ala., with six laps remaining to finish second, while Holmes settled for third. Poor rules make for poor racing. There was a good deal of yellow flags today. Almost all were from spins. There were no serious accidents beyond the numerous spinouts. The flagman was quick to throw the yellow flag. There was no 'one spin and you're out rule'. The drivers recognized this. Whenever they 'lost it' or someone else 'turned them' they waited for the yellow flag to be shown and then moved back on the track. You can't really blame the drivers for this behavior. If the track had better rules, there would be far fewer delays. Fewer delays mean happier fans. However, some tracks 'get it' and many 'don't'. That probably isn't going to change anytime soon. - Trackchaser Randy Lewis (only 190 US tracks remaining) www.randylewis.org
