Movie of the week: "Racing Dreams - Coming of Age in a Fast World" is showing in Atlanta, Charlotte, and eight other big cities. ""Racing Dreams" is the award winning coming-of-age story about three kids who dream of one day racing in NASCAR. Academy Award nominated documentary filmmaker, Marshall Curry, takes us into the lives of Annabeth (11 years old), Josh (12), and Brandon (13) as they compete for the championship in the World Karting Association's National Series—widely considered the Little League for professional racing. "Clocking speeds of up to 70 mph, these young drivers race their way through the year-long National Series that spawned many of NASCAR's top drivers. And at the same time, they navigate the treacherous road between childhood and young adulthood." http://www.themovieinsider.com/m7159/racing-dreams/ I've seen it, and highly recommend it. It's showing at eight places around Atlanta. http://www.themovieinsider.com/m7159/6/racing-dreams/ PHOTO www.racingdreamsfilm.com/
Max Gresham, a rising high school senior from Griffin, wheeled his the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota to razor-thin victory over Ty Dillon and Darrell Wallace in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series Goodyear Dealers of Iowa 200 at Iowa Speedway Sunday. “We came here and ran really well in the West race last season,” said Gresham, who finished third in the NKNPS event at Iowa last fall. “We knew we’d run well again. I had the same car that Joey (Logano) and Kyle (Busch) won with here in the past. We knew we could win again. Those guys are great drivers and that's a pretty elite group and I am thrilled to add my name to it This Joe Gibbs Racing team is great and I am very fortunate to be a part of that too.” Gresham now has seven NASCAR K&N Pro Series starts to his credit. His victory at Iowa Sunday was his second in a row after capturing the South Boston (VA) 150 on April 3. The win boosted him to the top of the NKNPSE season championship point standings. “Our goal at the start of the season was to win races, win the Rookie of the Year title, and win the team championship,” said Gresham. “Initially, that seemed like a dream, but we are winning races and leading the points. There’s a long season in front of us and who knows what will happen the rest of the way out, but there’s no denying we’re off to a great start.” The race will be televised on SPEED on Thursday, May 27 at 1 p.m. Eastern Time. Next up for Max Gresham will be his first-ever visit to venerable Martinsville (VA) Speedway for a NASCAR K&N Pro Series East event on Sunday, June 6. In an ARCA test Tuesday at the 2-mile Michigan International Speedway, Gresham made a lap at 177.09 mph. www.MaxGresham.com. Andrew Smith, of Pooler, GA, the 2009 Humpy's Heroes winner, drove a Chevrolet to 25th place, earning $1,675. Full story at http://www.georgiastockcarracing.com

From the track website: This is the online home of Speedway Park (in Swainsboro). The track has undergone extensive renovations to the grandstands, concession stand, scoring tower, and the track itself, and improvements continue to be made. The track is a 3/10 mile semi-banked clay oval that provides some exciting side-by-side racing! We have our state license and the track is completely up to code. The wall was approved. However, the drivers feel its too dangerous if ran into. That's the reason we want to widen the track to give more room to race. We are also considering a couple of other options. The website will be updated soon for our next race date. www.speedwayparkracing.com This track is at 572 HWY 56 N, Swainsboro, GA. Ethan Hunter, of Tiger, GA, who will graduate from Rabun County High School Friday night, Scored a Super Latemodel Win at The Toccoa Speedway Saturday. It's his second Toccoa win of the season. At the age of eighteen, Ethan Hunter has already amassed a thirteen year racing career that has taken him from go karts to super late models. Hunter has also had brief stops during his career in four cylinder pony cars, crate late models, and steel head late models. All along the way Hunter has picked up wins (including a Fastrak Touring win in crates and three super late model triumphs) and it so seems, more importantly; he has become a student of the sport which he chose. Ethan growing up was always a fan of Casey Roberts. So when he started out he chose the number of his long time idol. Last year when Ethan ran for rookie of the year with the Southern All Stars, he wanted to create his own image. Out of respect, he decided to change his number. He narrowly missed the Southern All Stars Dirt Racing Series Rookie of the Year title in 2009, and was unanimously selected as the 2009 Most Improved Driver by his Southern All Stars peers. He will forgo chasing points in 2010 and focus on building his program at select events in his region. http://www.ethanhunterracing.com/

There were lights, cameras, and plenty of action Friday night at Oglethorpe Speedway Park as the half-mile clay track in Pooler continued its weekly racing series. For a group of Savannah College of Art and Design film students, however, the night was about more than flying dirt and scraping sheet metal. It was also about family. SCAD juniors Michael Washington, 20, Robert Lodge, 21, and Sebastian Pinzon, 20, have spent the past month at OSP working on a yet-to-be-named project for their documentary directing class. "We wanted to focus on the families that race," Pinzon said. "There is a 12-year-old (Chase Smith) that races here, and we are focusing on his story and experiences. It's a great story." For the documentary, Lodge and Pinzon are splitting directing and cinematography duties, while Washington directs and produces. Senior Lauren Roberts, 22, is lending her expertise on sound for the assignment, which is due at the end of May. After a special in-class viewing, the SCAD team hopes to submit their documentary to film festivals. http://savannahnow.com/olgethorpe-speedway/2010-05-02/video-scad-students-document-racing-families-oglethorpe-speedway
