The Southern Superstars Short Track Series hopes to partner with Atlanta Motor Speedway for a 100 lap race to be held Friday night, September 3rd, on the infield quarter-mile during the NASCAR Sprint Cup Weekend. Southern Super Stars promoter B J Parker stated “This is an exciting opportunity for our Series just to be mentioned in the same breath with Atlanta Motor Speedway and NASCAR. It’s a great opportunity for our Series and our drivers to compete at such a great track on Labor Day weekend." The Series has a nine race schedule at Huntsville, Sayre, and Montgomery Speedways, running 100 laps events paying $2000 to win. Mark Day has won their first two races of the season. http://www.superstarsracing.com/ Two years ago the FASTRAK dirt series was set to race on the asphalt quarter-mile, but it was rained out.

My Trackchaser friends wrote last year that there are only three tracks with weekly Sunday shows east of the Mississippi, but next Sunday, May 30, Georgia race fans will have a choice of two shows. Rome has it's first show of 2010, highlighted by a $2000 to win Super Late Model Championship and all their local divs. www.dixiespeedway.com The "back-to-dirt" Senoia Speedway, on Atlanta's southside, has a 40-lap $2000 to win feature for the NeSmith Dirt Late Model Series, plus five local classes. http://www.newsenoiaraceway.com
Critics on the racing forums wondered last fall if Max Gresham would get a special edge at the newly remodeled Gresham Motorsports Park, owned by his family, but in two races at the track, he's been jinxed. At last fall's World Crown, Gresham ran very well, but was DQ'd in post-race tech. Saturday, he was nearly fastest in qualifying, but put his car up on the wall and out of the race on his second lap. He then became part of the Speed51 webcast team. He is now 17, and about to complete his junior year at Woodward Academy. This weekend, he will drive the Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota in Sunday’s NASCAR K&N Pro Series race at Iowa Speedway. The car has never lost at the Newton, IA racetrack. If you think that's going to put a lot of pressure on the 17-year-old driver heading into the Goodyear Dealers of Iowa 200, think again. “I’ll be driving the same car Kyle Busch ran at Iowa and won with last year,” said Gresham. “That car has never lost here. Kyle has two wins in it and Joey Logano has a win in it at Iowa. I know that car is going to be just as fast when I step into it and we’ll have a chance at going four-for-four there with it. “ Gresham will be looking to fashion his own winning streak. In his last NASCAR K&N Pro Series outing in the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, Gresham led 146 laps and captured his first division win in the South Boston (VA) 150. It was just his sixth career NASCAR K&N Pro Series start. He had a top five at Iowa last year. The race will be televised on SPEED Thursday, May 27 at 6 p.m. Eastern Time. http://www.greshammotorsports.com

Promotion idea: In November, the American Speed Association created its own page on Facebook® (www.facebook.com/american.speed.assoc). Without any heavy marketing about the page, ASA has so far obtained 1,200 followers. ASA also has created a following on Twitter™ as well (twitter.com/amerspeedassoc). ASA has linked up its Twitter™ account with Facebook® so when a new story is posted on Facebook® a "tweet" will go out as well notifying of the new story. YouTube™ (www.youtube.com/americanspeedassoc) became instrumental for ASA when they visited the Republic of South Africa this past January. Using a simple video producing program, ASA was able to upload short daily video diaries showing race fans back in the United States what was happening. "I will admit that I have been impressed with the number of followers on Facebook® and Twitter™ and amount of times our videos have been viewed on YouTube™," Dennis Huth, ASA President said. "What has been great is that the cost to set these up was nothing yet it reaches a lot of people, it's immediate and it's effective. www.ASA-Racing.com

David Odell, Tina Stephens, and Brittany Finley authored their own new chapters in the sport scoring big wins at Gresham Motorsports Park Saturday. Odell notched his first major Late Model Stock car win, capturing the CARQUEST Auto Parts Pro Late Model 100-lap main event while Stephens and Finley became the first women to win at the new track. Odell ran a strong race, benefitting from a late tangle by leaders Bubba Pollard and Johnny Henderson. He then made his own luck grabbing the top spot from Shawn Simpson on the restart with 14 laps remaining and then held off a late-race challenge from Beau Slocumb to win his first major event since capturing a Truck race at Opp (AL) Speedway several years ago. "We were aiming for a top-six or top-seven finish," said Odell in Victory Lane. "If we could have done that, we would have been just fine. We're a low budget team. Slocumb has his stuff figured out and to beat him is so exciting." 25 members of the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame were on hand for GMP's first event as the Official Track of the Georgia Hall and fittingly, Stephens and Finley made history by becoming the first women drivers to win on the new Gresham Motorsports Park half-mile oval. Stephens, celebrating her 36th birthday, was never headed in the Outlaw Late Model main event holding off David Murphy by less than a car length. She's the wife of late model driver Kevin Stephens, who was 14th in that race. Brittany Finley, of Ardmore, AL, made it two-for-two for the ladies as she backed up her fast time in the division by winning the Truck Series main event over Brian Huff, Bill Hoose, Michael Foy and Joel Townsend. Brittany won Montgomery's World Classic Super Truck race in October 2009, and has a second place at Montgomery this season. Lady fans were treated to half-price beer in the track's beer garden following both wins. Spanky Hicks captured the Mini Stock main event outdueling Steve Hill, Darrell Carlson, Avery Burgess and Bryan Muse while Doug Sexton won his second Renegade Street Stock main event of the season. You Tube interviews with drivers: http://www.youtube.com/user/greshammp Next up at Gresham Motorsports Park will be the Super Late Models For Super Dads. Promotion idea: If I were king If I were a promoter I would do away with heat races entirely. Of course, I would never consider having time trials either. Then I would schedule a “features only” program for these 10-car classes with a good number of laps ranging from 20-30 circuits. I might run three or four of the classes before intermission. Then I would save the best two classes for after the break. With a starting time of 7:30 p.m. the entire program should be finished by 10 p.m. Fans are voting with their feet ... and butts. Tonight’s crowd numbered about 250 people. Last night they had about 100 people. Remember, folks “vote with their feet”. With crowds of this size, “people have voted”. Why do promoters stick with the same thing, meaning meaningless heats and then features. www.randylewis.org

Five Flags Speedway and Mobile International Speedway are posting a $300 bonus to encourage their regular competitors to race in this weekend's Diamondback 100 at South Alabama. “With a break in our Pro Late Model schedule, it seems like a good opportunity for Gulf Coast racers to try out the highly competitive Viper Series at SAS,” said Five Flags General Manager Tim Bryant. “ We firmly believe, as does Ida Fields from Mobile, in the Tracks Supporting Tracks theory, and we hope this bonus will serve as a little extra incentive for eligible racers. The highest finishing car that has competed in at least four Events at either track this year, will earn the money.” All teams that competes in the Diamondback 100 will receive ten gallons of free racing fuel at the track. Teams that bring a new driver to the track for this season will receive another five gallons of fuel as long as both drivers compete in the race. One driver will win a free set of Hoosier race tires.

Chase Elliott started his new Aaron's 2010 Ford Mustang in the Sunoco National Tour series at Rockingham. He sat on the pole for the event and led every lap to post a win in his first race on a one-mile oval race track. The race, requiring the new-style Mustang and Camaro bodies, attracted only eight cars, with four finishing. Elliott was unable to bring home back-to-back victories though. HIn his debut in the USAR Pro Cup Series on Saturday at Rockingham got off to a bad start when he was black flagged when his window net fell down. Elliott pitted under green on Lap 14 and lost two and one-half laps to the field in the process. He spent most of the rest of the day playing catch up and fighting an ill-handling race car. He wound up with an 11th place finish. Bill Elliott purchased a USAR car previously raced by the late Matt Hawkins. Chase Elliott qualified seventh for his USAR Pro Cup Series debut at 143.192-mph lap in his Aaron's Ford Fusion. Johanna Long also made her USAR Pro Cup Series debut in Saturday's race. The Pensacola, Fla., driver qualified 13th with a 141.127-mph lap in her Panhandle Grading & Paving Ford Fusion. The Series had 22 cars at Greshams Mar. 27, and had 22 at Rockingham, counting new entries by Chase Elliott and Pensacola's Johanna Long.

On the final lap, Brad Wickham from Rutherfordton, NC, and Lance Moss from Cherryville, NC, crashed in turn three. Both cars flipped violently with Moss hitting the outside wall on the vulnerable left side of the car.
