Three posts on the 4m.net racing forum: "Toccoa Motor Speedway is now CLOSED." "Attention!!!! Toccoa Speedway is not done!! Look for a big announcement coming later this week on the future of Toccoa Speedway!" "Negotiations have been verbally completed on the "New Promotion" of the Toccoa Speedway. The official Contract signing is scheduled to take place Sunday morning May 9th. The Toccoa Speedway will be closed Saturday May 8th and 15th. New Managements plans are to reopen on Saturday night May,22nd. Featuring a Full Race Program. Stay tuned to Track Forums, 4m.net and the Toccoa Speedway website for further details." Jack Maddox & David Conner assumed Management of the Toccoa Speedway for the 2010 Season. At the time, Conner said there won't be many changes, but the Super Latemodels will be a weekly Division @ Toccoa. The schedule included two Southern All Stars shows and four Southeastern Latemodel Sportsman Series Races. They took over a track needing a lot of maintenance and upgrades, and facing competition from Lavonia, Hartwell, and some South Carolina tracks. The track's restrooms had made several lists of "Worst" and the front-stretch wall had collapsed after a big rainfall. Last week, the Super LM feature started four cars. The Sugar Creek and Douglas dirt tracks in GA have not opened in 2010. Hopefully Toccoa - long publicized by Richard "Papermen" Pearson as the "Oldest & Fastest High Banked 5/16 Mile Clay Tri Oval on the Planet" - will recover. http://www.toccoaspeedway.info/
The Southern All Stars Dirt Racing Series will invade the 1/3 mile North Georgia Speedway with a $5,000 to win, fifty lap, main event for super late models Saturday. The speedway, now under new management of Timmy Millwood and partner Tom Peters, has seen great success so far in 2010 with improvements to the lighting and sound systems along with the move to Saturday night racing. For over a half century, North Georgia Speedway has been known for its exciting finishes with its high banked turns and perfectly shaped one third mile red clay oval. The series last visited North Georgia Speedway on April 3rd, 2009 where eventual series champion Randy Weaver of Crossville, TN claimed top honors. A full slate of local racing action is on the events undercard. Racing action at 7:30pm. Tim McCreadie scored his first tour win of 2010 by outdueling Darrell Lanigan in Saturday night's World of Outlaws Late Model Series 50-lap A-Main at Swainsboro Raceway. McCreadie earned $10,675 for his 13th career win on the WoO LMS. "Darrell might have had the better car, but we got lucky enough to get to the lead and get a win." Four caution flags slowed the event, including three for WoO LMS regulars. Shane Clanton of Locust Grove, Ga., was the first Outlaw to run into trouble when he pulled to a stop on the homestretch while battling for fourth on lap 14 because his car's hood flapped up to obstruct his view due to broken pins. Later, on lap 42, Brady Smith of Solon Springs, Wis., spun between turns three and four when he tangled with a lapped car while racing hard with Lanigan for second, and on the ensuing restart Clint Smith of Senoia, Ga., slowed because his car's left-rear wheel flew off. Promotion idea: I really don’t understand the concept of the “senior discount”. In most cases, seniors are much more “well off” than any other segment of the population. Try to think about it this way. Retirees left their jobs because they didn’t need to work anymore. They already had enough money to last the rest of their lives. On the other hand, why do you think most people who are still working do? They are working for money. Why not give the discounts to the people who need it ... the one’s still working for money? They are probably the group that needs a price reduction the most. How about giving a “young family” discount. They probably need the help more. Despite, my lack of “need” I never pass up a senior discount. - Trackchaser Randy Lewis, age 61 www.randylewis.org
MAY 15 at Cochran: April Johnson Memorial Race from Wendy Johnson, her sister April and I grew up at the racetrack with our parents from the time the track was built. My sister began attending when she was only a few weeks old and rarely ever missed a race. She saw the track go through several track managers and first began writing the articles for the speedway when she was only 16 or 17. She did it for several years as a volunteer because she would eat, breathe, and sleep racing! When Winford and Phil took over the track, she continued writing the articles and at this point was never paid anything. Not long after Winford took over the scorer passed away and he asked April to begin scoring and continue writing the articles. She also became Winford's "secretary." Often typing what he needed, creating schedules, making the score sheets, etc. Winford would call on her to help him do whatever. She LOVED it! When Buddy Churchwell became track promotor, she continued to work with him. She never met anyone that she couldn't get along with. She did all of this with a fatal lung disease that she was diagnosed with at the age of 14. She was progressively getting worse and passed away in 2004, when she was 23. Buddy and Winford both agreed to do a race in her memory and we have done this for a few years now. My parents and I continue to work at the track, I took over her duties and my parents work the grandstand and pit gate. Some of her last words were to "Please keep the track going as long as you can..." Hope this helps to explain who she was. We all love and miss her so much! This will be a $3000 to win Natl. Kentucky Lawsuit Resolved - Reported by www.Frontstretch.com A Kentucky track lawsuit dragging on nearly five years against the ISC has finally come to a close. Jerry Carroll, one of several former track owners of Kentucky Speedway, has settled on the eve of a trial determining whether he would be capable of continuing the case. According to Carroll, he told several papers on Friday that he’d decided to no longer pursue the matter, refusing to disclose the amount of any financial settlement that has been reached. The trial has officially been canceled, and no longer appears on the docket in federal court. For years, the lawsuit alleged that ISC had a monopoly on the Sprint Cup schedule, with dates unfairly assigned and kept away from tracks like Kentucky that had proven the basic qualifications needed for a race date. However, federal courts had ruled against Carroll and Co. both in the initial judgment and on appeal, leaving the matter on life support heading into this spring. With the track sold to SMI nearly two years ago, new track owner Bruton Smith had repeatedly called on the former owners to drop the suit, and all of them are due a $7.5 million contingency if the track is awarded a Cup date – something NASCAR said would not happen until the issue was dropped. With the lawsuit cleared, it’s now widely expected for the track to get that Sprint Cup date in 2011. To do so, Smith is expected to ask for a date switch from one of two races at Atlanta or Loudon, two tracks with multiple Cup dates but whose attendance has fluctuated at times.
The NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte opens May 11th, with the induction ceremony for the inaugural class on May 23rd. There are also 40,000 square feet of interactive exhibits and artifacts on display for everyone who visits. (Mike Neff, Senior Writer, www.Frontstretch.com)
Promotion idea: It's no secret that we are facing some challenging times. Our beloved Race Fans, our Competitors, and even the Speedway itself, are all dealing with some obstacles. Surely, there must be some solutions to benefit all involved. One such idea for us to think about, is supporting sponsors. In our everyday lives, we spend money on goods and services. That will never change. The next time you visit 5 Flags Speedway, (and we hope it's this Friday) take special notice to the Sponsor names on the sides of the race cars. Try to patronize these businesses. Many are owned by the competitors themselves, and only healthy business allows them to race. Be sure when dealing with these businesses, to mention their car or driver, or the track itself. You never know, your words of encouragement could quite possibly be the difference in a driver maintaining his or her sponsor. (Tim Bryant, 5 Flags Speedway)
