The National Vintage Racing Association, Racing Electronics "Vintage Thunder" Racing Series was at Watermelon Capital Speedway, Cordele, Georgia on Saturday night, April 17th. The NVRA brought 22 race cars from Georgia and Alabama put on a spectacular show for the spectators. There were two first time winners as well as some drivers making their first appearance with the NVRA.
Robert Cantrell of Commerce, Georgia notched his first ever victory by winning the Limited Sportsman feature in his Chevy coupe six cylinder powered race car, # 3, edging his son, Allen Cantrell, also of Commerce for the victory. Robert Cantrell is 72 years old and will be celebrating his next birthday in May. He usually gives his son Allen, first pick of the Limited cars, and he takes the other. Jerry Williams of Cornelia, Georgia was third in the race. Ruben Frady of Marietta, Georgia was unable to start the race, as his new race car had mechanical problems.
Bryan Cantrell of Flowery Branch, Georgia won the Late Model Sportsman race in his Cougar taking his first victory of the year, he is also a son of Robert Cantrell. John Knowles Jr. of Grovetown, Georgia was second in his 56 Chevy.
Jason Bowen of Bonaire, Georgia won the Late Model Modified race in his 65 Ford Falcon, taking his second win of the year. Woody Moore of Hawkinsville, Georgia came in second after leading the first six laps, D W Hinson of Warner Robins, Georgia, making his first start in a NVRA race was third in a Camaro, and Rusty Russell of Cochran, Georgia was fourth in his Ford Falcon. David Adams of Tucker, Georgia had problems with his car and did not start the feature.
Woody Callaway of Bonaire, Georgia claimed his second Modified Sportsman victory of the year in his 35 Ford. Cooley Hobdy of Valdosta, Georgia was second in his Harvey Jones tribute car # 6, Martin Sapp of Quitman, Georgia came in third, and led the first seven circuits of the race, Mike Conners of Preston, Georgia finished fourth and Richard Smith of Fitzgerald, Georgia, making his first ever NVRA race rounded out the top five positions. Irvin Lawson of Morven, Georgia was sixth and Harvey Strickland of Quitman, Georgia was seventh, crashing at the start of the race. Gene Maine of Valdosta, Georgia was unable to start the race in his 37 Ford # 201, he is a newcomer to the NVRA.
Fred Herren of Newell, Alabama won his first ever NVRA race in the Modified Open division, driving his Ford Mustang # H-1, leading the entire race. He was followed by David Owens of Lizella, Georgia and Bo Wagner of Gray, Georgia.

This Saturday, April 24, 2010 Watermelon Capital Speedway, located 1/2 mile off I-75 exit 104 in Cordele, Ga., the 2010 racing season continues with racing in all local divisions including Bandolero's, Legends, Front Wheel Drive, Claimers, Mini Stock, Pure Stock and Super Street.
The Speedway Gates will open at 5pm on Saturday with practice beginning at 6:30pm and racing at 7:30pm. Grandstand admission for adults is $10 , kids 6-11 is $5 and kids under 5 is free. Infield admission will be $20.
Watermelon Capital Speedway is located 1/2 mile off of I-75 at exit 104, Cordele, GA. From the north turn right off the exit, from the south turn left off the exit.
