GEORGIA STOCK CAR RACING APRIL 15, 2010
GEORGIA STOCK CAR RACING APRIL 15, 2010

Dixie Speedway opens this week with a rare Friday-Saturday show, with Friday Time Trials for Super Late Models, LLM, and Crates, and Heat races for Econo & Super Bomber, Pony Stock, & Cruisers
Saturday will have the Spring Championships in all divisions. Racing starts at 7:00 p.m. both nights.
Next Friday and Sat., the Monster Trucks return, with Dueling Back Flips & Freestyle Motorcross, and a Show & Shine Contest with trophies. 8:00 each night. http://www.dixiespeedway.com

The Pro Late Models – the division that headlined the 2009 World Crown 300 last November - will make their first 2010 Gresham Motorsports Park appearance in a 100-lap main event Saturday. Also on tap for the GMP will be main events in the Outlaw Late Model, Renegade Street Stock, Mini Stock, and Truck divisions.
At intermission, Year One Cruise Night - Year One muscle cars, hot rods, classics and trucks will tool their way over to GMP for a great night of stock car racing and parade laps during intermission. Meanwhile, the Funopolis FanTastic Challenge – where adult fans can race a Funopolis Go Kart on the GMP front straight for prizes, Funopolis coupons, and GMP race tickets – will also be one of the featured events at intermission. Adult Tickets ($20) are available now online at http://greshammotorsportspark.ticketforce.com
TJ Reaid, of Acworth, will be driving his family's car at Greshams, and will drive the Kyle Busch Foundation/Kyle Busch Motorsports Toyota in the PASS South show at Orange County (NC) Speedway April 24. Full story at http://www.georgiastockcarracing.com

Gresham Motorsports team has announced a 12-race Pro and Super Late Model Stock Car schedule with rising talent Gene Kirila as the driver. He's a 17-year old from Hermitage, PA. Last year he drove a late model owned by David Stremme in five races. Kirila will make his GMS Pro Late Model debut Saturday. http://www.speed51.com/2010_Stories/PLM/Kirila_Announcement_4_13.html

Clay Rogers dominated the Racing Electronics USARacing Pro Cup 250 Presented By Live Oak Plantation at Gresham Motorsports Park Mar. 27y. For Rogers, who won the last USAR race at the track in 2007 when it was still Peach State Speedway, it was business as usual. “Even though it’s a different track, it still drives a lot like the old Peach State – just with new a Gresham wrapper on it,” said Rogers in Victory Lane after beating Benny Gordon to the line by 0.470-second margin. “This track has a lot more grip than the old one, but you still have to drive it the same. I’ve been with two different teams since I last won here, but it still feels just as good to win this time as it did the last.”
Rogers started 10th on the grid after Caleb Holman won the pole with a new track record for the USAR division with a 17.770 second lap in qualifying. The only Georgian in the race, Bill Plemons, Jr, finished 16th. http://greshammotorsportspark.com

Attn All Drivers & Fans:
Due to the slow economy we regretfully find it necessary to cancel the local racing dates for the 2010 season. We will continue to have Special races, special events, etc. A new schedule is being prepared and will be posted in the near future. We apologize for this development and plan to change back to include our regular local racing once the economy improves. http://www.goldenislesspeedway.com/
The National Late Moddel Series is scheduled for the track next week. Stand By.

A BAD YEAR FOR YOUNG RACERS
The outlook for Travis Pennington, age 19, is 12 months or more in state prison before his appeal can even be considered. He was convicted in Douglas County in March of statutory rape. His lawyer thinks there are good grounds for a successful appeal, and a new trial. Travis was a winner in dirt late model racing, and probably the best young dirt prospect in Georgia.
Georgia's best young asphalt racer, Matt Hawkins, age 21, died in a shooting accident Feb. 14, 2009. Matt's resume included wins in his first starts in both ARCA and Hooter's Pro Cup. http://www.matthawkins.net/
Another fine young asphalt driver, Beau Slocumb. age 25, lost nearly a whole racing season in 2009, while getting cancer treatment in Texas. He returned with a fifth place finish in the ARVA 150 at Kansas last Sept.
http://www.beauslocumb.com/Beau_Slocumb/Beau.html

Matt Dillner, of the Speed51.com racing site, has added a good food near race tracks page: http://www.speedeats.com
In Atlanta, Dillner picks:
Fat Matt's Rib Shack
Pitty Pat's Porch
Varsity
Bobby & June's Country Kitchen
Gladys Knight and Ron Winan's Chicken & Waffle
Spondivits
Send him your suggestions.

Photographer Tino Patti has been posting news and results from Sammy Duke's West Georgia Speedway in Whitesburg at http://douglcountyliar.blogspot.com/
Two things have struck the track this spring, says Patti:
1 - Duke's son Brian cut the purse for two divisions after the racing was done April 3
2 - nearby Senoia Speedway converted to dirt, and opened Sat., April 10, and a bunch of mad West Georgia race teams went there. West Georgia had to cancel.
Now Duke has changed his racing to Friday nights, starting this week, with action starting at 8:00 p.m.

Albany Motor Speedway has started 2010 with a good car count and race fans coming to see which driver who just may come out on top. After 3 weeks of racing, we have had only 1 repeat winner which is none other than the legend Billy Joe Boyette in the Mini Stocks. The other classes are really serving up a win just about to anyone. Racing in all classes featuring Late Models -Limited Late Models -Pure Stock -Mini Stock -Enduro-. Action Starts At 7 P.M. Grandstand: $10.00 http://www.albanymotorspeedway.net

The Old Mans Garage FASTRAK Late Model Series will make its way back to Travelers Rest Speedway Saturday for the “SC Pro Late Model Clash”- $2000 to win, $200 to start. Current track promoter Andy Hyde has made considerable improvements at the track, including tons of new clay providing a smooth track with 3 and 4 wide racing. The track has made overwhelming changes and just this past weekend featured 123 cars present with the grandstands almost filled to capacity. Hot Laps: 6:30 www.fastrakracing.com

Max Gresham returned to the track where he made his NASCAR K&N Pro Series East debut a year ago and drove to Victory Lane Saturday at South Boston Speedway. Gresham finished fifth in the 2009 event. He only made three starts last season to maintain his Sunoco Rookie of the Year eligibility for 2010.
"It's been a great day here," Gresham said. "I've got to thank Joe Gibbs and Toyota for putting such a great car together, and my crew chief Mike Sibley. The whole team was just excellent.
"We definitely put a great car out there and we were fast the whole race."
With this win, Gresham secured a starting spot in the postseason NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown.
Gresham collected his first 21 Means 21 presented by Coors Light Pole Award Saturday afternoon and led all but four of the 150 laps. In addition to the win, Greshman cleaned up on the contingency awards. He was the Sunoco Rookie of the Race, and earned the WIX Filters Lap Leader Award as well as the Featherlite Most Improved Driver Award (he improved 22 spots from his Greenville finish).
Andrew Smith started eighth and finished 19th in his second start in the series. He earlier finished first at Greenville Pickens, but was DQ's for a shock problem. NASCAR has suspended his crew chief for two races.

Bridges raced past Gray who started outside the front row next to Aguilar, for the runner-up position on lap twenty-nine .Bridge then reeled in Aguilar. Bridges then pulled along beside the eventual winner and the two raced side-by-side from laps 35 through 38 before Aguilar pulled ahead for the win and his first USCS victory lane visit.

Bubba Pollard, of Senoia, took the lead away from fellow Georgian Chase Elliott with two laps to go in the opening round of the 2010 Blizzard Super Late Model Series at Five Flags Speedway (FL). For Pollard, it was his third-career win in the Blizzard Super Late Model Series.
Pollard took the Ronnie Sanders-owned red #18 Super Late Model back to victory lane at Five Flags Speedway for the first time in eight years. Sanders, a veteran short track racer who is on the mend from a recent successful surgery to combat cancer, was the last driver to take the checkers in the car at the famed Pensacola, Florida track in the final race of the Blizzard Series season in 2002.
“The biggest thing tonight is Mr. Ronnie,” said Pollard. “Without him and his crew I wouldn’t be doing all the racing that I’m doing. He’s getting himself well and I’m just doing what I can to hold up my end of this deal and keep winning races."
Ryan Lawler, Casey Smith, and Jeff Fultz rounded out the top five. Pole sitter, and new track-record holder Augie Grill lead 95 laps before a rear end leak parked him for the night.

Chase Elliott and Casey Roderick showed that they were plenty capable
of handling the challenges posed by the tough old Mobile International Speedway track and a stellar field
of Late Model drivers Saturday.
Roderick was a last-minute entry in Elliott's back-up car. In
the race, they battled at the front all night before Elliott finished third
and Roderick fifth. Roderick led the race for 20 laps until the final caution of the
evening came out on Lap 80.
Elliott was awarded the $1,000 bonus for the weekend's best average finish
between Friday at Five Flags Speedway and Saturday at Mobile. Those two races are part of
the Gulf Coast Championship.
