Venerable North Georgia Speedway, a dirt-track racer favorite for decades, is under new management and partners Timmy Millwood and Tom Peters, both with racing experience, are promising more races and a more fan-friendly environment. Anything would be better than the Monty Morrow-directed operation over the past couple of years. Morrow, who also promotes the Cleveland (Tenn.) Speedway, almost destroyed the Chatsworth operation. Morrow had only five or six races at North Georgia last spring and summer. Fans and drivers are sure to welcome Millwood and Peters with open arms. A 26-race schedule is in place and will get under way Saturday. Gates will open at 5 p.m. and racing begins at 7:30 p.m. Adm. $10. “We’re giving a commitment of our time and money to make sure guys have a full schedule and we’ll run every Saturday night,” Peters said. The Southern Regional Racing Series will make at least three stops at NGS, the first scheduled for April 3. The Southern All-Stars will be in Chatsworth for a $5,000 Late Model event on May 8 and the Volunteer Racing Series has two $3,000 races slated for May 29 and Sept. 4. (Thanks to http://daltondailycitizen.com/sports) North Georgia's practice session got exciting when John Carter flipped his late model three times - either trying to miss a dog (possibly named Monty) on the track or after contact with another car. The USARacing Pro Cup Series (once known as the Hooter's Series, will kick off its second season of competition Saturday at Gresham Motorsports Park with a 250-lap race. Jimmy Wilson, Vice President and Series Director, said the series is strong, proven and ready to compete on the track. “We got through our 14-race schedule last year and going into 2010 we’ve got a 16-race schedule. We’re solid. We’re still trying to finalize that elusive series sponsor but we will get it ... If we could average 30 cars at every event this year, improve upon our attendance from last year, and have a safe season - That would be a successful season in my opinion.” The race marks the return of the series to the Jefferson, Ga., half-mile oval for the first time since Clay Rogers captured the Aaron’s 199 in 2007. Rogers, the 2009 USARacing Pro Cup Series champion, recently visited the track and was impressed by the improvements. “They’ve got a beautiful facility down there and have a lot of new asphalt and a really smooth racing surface,” Rogers said. “I’d say we’re going to be a second to a second and half faster than we were there in the past. It’s going to be a little different ballgame but we’re still going to put on a heck of a show I’m sure." One Georgian is pre-entered: Bill Plemons Jr., of Locust Grove, with sponsorship from IRM / Jones Recycling / Hooters. Live Oak Plantation, a sporting retreat located in the tall pine woods and wild wiregrass fields near Adel, GA, offering Quail, pheasant and deer hunting, fishing, and golf, is sponsoring the race. There will also be features in the Outlaw Late Models, Renegade Street Stocks and Mini-Stock divisions, starting at 6 p.m. Adult Tickets $25. If you have a ticket stub from the GMP March 13 season-opening event, you'll get $5 off an Adult ticket. www.usarprocup.com www.greshammotorsportpark.com

Montgomery Motor Speedway’s season-opening “Show Me The Money” race should have been called “Show Me Some Excitement.” Money didn’t seem to be the driving force in the dramatic last-lap battle for the win, as Chase Elliott, Josh Hamner and Justin South put on a classic short-track battle for the win, with South, who took the white flag in second place, taking the win with Elliott a close second and Hamner third. For Elliott, the race could just as well have been called “Stand On The Gas” because those were the instructions he got from his father and spotter Bill Elliott when the laps wound down and it was time for the teenager to run with the big Late Model dogs or sit on the porch. “I loved it when we were coming to one of our last restarts and Dad said, ‘Stand on it, son’ instead of ‘Ready….ready….Green Flag,’” Elliott said. “It was just that kind of a night.” Elliott was there with his No. 9 Aaron’s Dream Machine, sporting a new paint scheme for the first time this season and a freshened Blue Oval Ford 347 Crate Motor under the hood, and qualified second - breaking the old track record. Ronnie Johnson (aka, The Chattanooga Flash) took on the Best of the Best Friday night at BOYD's SPEEDWAY and stunned the dirt late model racing community, leading all 40 laps of the Southern All-Stars Dirt Racing Series CABIN FEVER event, pocketing the $4,000 first place prize money - and all with the new GM all aluminum CT525 crate motor. The S.A.S. series just last month made the motor legal and Johnson, whom marks his 60th career series win, did it in high fashion as the black #5 swept qualifying and the feature event. Austin Hubbard is an extremely talented 18-year-old who's thrilled to be running for a high-profile team on the World of Outlaws Late Model Series – and when he wins a race, he's going to show just how thrilled he is. Such was the case on Saturday night at Screven Motor Speedway, where Hubbard followed through on his promise to celebrate wildly after his first career WoO LMS A-Main victory. He had, of course, already broken out his impersonation of Ricky Bobby in Talladega Nights – stripping down to his fireproof long underwear and running wildly on the racetrack – after winning his first major dirt Late Model event in January at Golden Isles Speedway in Brunswick, Ga., but he was more than ready to do it again. Hubbard added some new elements to his arm-flapping Ricky Bobby run, this time putting his helmet back on after removing his fireproof top and executing several "I'm on fire!" rolls on the inside of the track. With red clay smeared on his exposed skin, he also ran along the outside wall and high-fived the long line of fans sticking their hands through the catch fence. Clint Smith, who celebrated his 45th birthday on Saturday, hired some help for his chief mechanic (and cousin) Darrell ('Don Vito') Cooper, who spent most of the 2009 season as Smith's lone fulltime wrench. Joining the Georgia veteran's team last week was Brad Baum, the 2007 WoO LMS Crew Chief of the Year while working under Chub Frank. Shane Clanton was back in competitive action after a serious thumb infection forced him to merely start-and-park his car in last month's season-opening WoO LMS events. His left thumb is healing well (he had only a small bandage covering it) and gave him no problems behind the wheel – even after a flying rock struck his injured finger. Georgia native Andrew Smith is taking a major step forward in his racing career by moving up to the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East at the season opening event at Greenville-Pickens Speedway Saturday. Smith is set to pilot the #37 for the Spraker Racing Enterprises team owned by Jeff Spraker, of Mooresville, NC. In 2009, Andrew was the first driver to earn the prestigious “Golden Wheel Award” as the winner of the inaugural Humpy’s Heroes Development Program. He started racing at age 8 and won his first championship at 9. Since those early days, Andrew has racked up over 200 wins, the 2009 Georgia Legends Road Course Championship, the 2009 Georgia Legends Dirt Championship, as well as the 2008 Legends National Championship. Smith comments, “I am looking forward to the opportunity to take this next step in my career. I was very comfortable in the car during our test session, and I know that I will have proven equipment from the Spraker Racing operation.” The #37 team hopes to capitalize on their past experience at the Greenville-Pickens facility. “Andrew has a strong short-track background and this track should be the perfect match for that experience. We’re looking forward to working with him this year as he runs for Rookie of the Year in this competitive series,” says Spraker. The race will be televised on Speed TV Thursday at 6:00 p.m.

The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series says an independent lab determined that samples from a tire that Chris Madden used to compete with at the Spring Thaw at Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap, TN, had been chemically altered before it was used in the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series sanctioned heat race on March 6, 2010 at Volunteer Speedway. The following penalties were handed down: Madden is being fined 300 points, plus the $1500 fine, $300 in lab testing fees, the $5,000 winnings for his 2nd place finish in the feature event, for a total of $6,800.00. A tire sample was collected from both Ray Cook and Jimmy Owens, tested, and found to be legal. A tire sample was also collected from Scott Bloomquist and Chris Wall at the March Madness event March 7th at Cherokee Speedway that were tested and found to be legal. www.lucasdirt.com

The ole days weren't always good: Brandon Reed's latest article tells the story of the 1950 death of Skimp Hersey at Lakewood Speedway. Most drivers at Lakewood carried a gas can in their car, in case they ran out on the track's long back stretch, and Hersey's can spilled and ignited when he tumbled side-over-side in front of the grandstands and 15,000 fans. The dazed driver got out of the car. "The closest person to Hersey was a photographer for an Atlanta newspaper (which is still being published today). The photographer moved out onto the track, and had been taking photos of the accident when Hersey emerged from the flames. He never went to help. He just continued taking photos. They would run in gruesome sequence on the front page of the next day’s paper." "The photographer, according to witness reports, had to be personally escorted by police from the track. Had the crowd gotten their hands on the photographer, they likely would have torn him to pieces." http://georgiaracinghistory.com/2010/03/18/hersey-tragedy-serves-as-a-reminder/
