CRA Gresham: Roderick starts on pole, breaks
PARTS FAILURE PUTS PREMATURE END TO PROMISING START
DAWSONVILLE, GA (March 15, 2010) – Casey Roderick and his Monolith team experienced a little bit of everything – except some good racing luck - in Saturday’s Champion Racing Association Super Late Model series race Gresham Motorsports Park in Jefferson.
Roderick and the crew, making their Late Model debut at Gresham, soldiered through cold weather and rain delays during practice to turn in an impressive qualifying performance, beating 24 of the 27 touring series drivers who started the 125-lap race.
An inversion put Roderick on the pole, and he ran in the lead pack for the first third of the race as polesitter and eventual winner Augie Grill was clearly the fastest on a cloudy, cold night in North Georgia.
On Lap 25, Roderick and his Bill Elliott Racing teammate Chase Elliott made contact in Turn Four while racing for third place. Elliott took the spot, while Roderick skillfully maintained control of his sliding car and fell into line in fourth place.
On Lap 45 Roderick reported to the Monolith team that he had a vibration, and pulled into the pits so his crew could check the car.
Crew Chief, Jim Barfield found two lug nuts sheared on the right front hub, and the team retired for the night since they’re not running for the championship in the CRA series.
“It could have been caused by the contact on the first lap with Ryan Lawler or it could be a wheel problem like what we had with [teammate] Chase [Elliott] at the All-American 400 last year when he sheared a lug nut,” Barfield said. “We will need to assess the situation back at the shop.”
After dropping out of the race, Roderick, from nearby Lawrenceville, showed his team spirit by hanging around to support his teammate Elliott, who finished second to Grill. It’s that kind of gesture that shows his crew, his fellow drivers and his sponsors that he’ll go far in the field of motorsports.
“It is impossible not to catch that winning attitude simply by being around Casey,” says Carlus Gann, an Elliott team crew member. “Casey is always complimentary of our work and always willing to try different things to be the very best he can be.”
Roderick said, “All in all we had one of the best cars there. I’m real proud of the team, Jim and everyone they gave me a good car to race. We had a little bit left before we broke and I think we could have raced with Augie and Chase at the end.”
Roderick’s next scheduled race will be a Pro Late Model race at Gresham Motorsports Park on May 15. For the most up-to-date Casey Roderick news, including his racing schedule and weekly podcast, please visit www.billelliottracing.com.
