GEORGIA STOCK CAR RACING MARCH 11, 2010
GEORGIA STOCK CAR RACING MARCH 11, 2010

"I fear failure more than I want to win." - Rick Hendrick

It's been 25 seasons since the Southern All-Stars Dirt Racing Series has raced at Boyd’s Speedway. In 1984, B.J. Parker brought two events to the track, formerly known as Tennessee-Georgia Speedway. Both events were won by Mississippi racing legend and Hall of Famer Jerry Inmon. Taking victories in Columbus, MS, and Talladega, AL, Inmon would also go on to win the 1984 Southern All Stars Championship. That would be the last time the series would sanction an event in Chattanooga.
Friday Boyd’s Speedway will host a $4,000 to-win S.A.S. (40 lap) event. In addition to the Late Model event, Boyd’s Speedway will offer racing in Steel Head Late Models, A&B Hobby, and Front Wheel Drive Divisions. www.BoydsSpeedway.com http://www.southernallstarsracingseries.com/NewsPage661.aspx

28 Super Late Model teams have entered the 125-lap Champion Racing Association (CRA) Super Series Super Late Model event at Gresham Motorsports Park this Saturday. This is the first time the Super Late Models have competed at the track since 2008.
"We couldn't think of a better way to open our 2010 racing season than having the CRA Super Late Models here," said Dan Elliott, General Manager at Gresham Motorsports Park. "These cars are going to be some of the fastest ever to compete at our track and they are going to put on a great show. It's going to be crazy fast and the excitement is going to have the fans on the edge of their seats all night long."
Heading the list of CRA stars at GMP this Saturday will be 2009 CRA champion Johnny Van Doorn. Also pre-entered in Saturday's 125-lap headliner are Johanna Long, Cale Gale, Eddie Van Meter, Mike Garvey, Chase Elliott, Jeff Fultz, Scott Hantz, Ryan Crane, Augie Grill, Russell Fleeman, and Casey Roderick.
Saturday's GMP season-opening program will also feature Outlaw Late Models, Trucks, Renegade Street Stocks, and multiple divisions of Legend and Bandolero racers.
Legends and Bandoleros take the green flag on the quarter-mile track at 11 a.m. Saturday morning, followed by practice for the CRA cars, Trucks, Outlaw Late Models, and Renegade Street Stocks. Main events start at 7 p.m.

Many of my readers are asking:
When Kevin Conway, driver of the No. 37 ExtenZe Ford, showed up for his early Sun. interview on Captain Herb's WSB radio show, he brought some samples from his sponsor. Did Capt. Herb or Doug "Fireball" Turnbull get them?

Never heard from again: "Atlanta area psychic Kevin Blackshear, who has a history of picking race winners, picks Mark Martin to win at Daytona, and Carl Edwards to win at Atlanta in March."

NASCAR Report: It wasn’t a good day for Georgia drivers. Unadilla’s David Ragan scrubbed the wall early and finished off the pace in 37th, while Joey Logano, a Connecticut native that grew up racing at AMS, was involved in a lap-41 incident that relegated him to 35th. Dawsonville’s Bill Elliott had the best result of the day, coming home 16th.

Kevin Harvick was the class of the field Saturday, piloting his No. 2 E-Z-GO Chevrolet to the win in the E-Z-GO 200 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
Georgia drivers Ryan Seig (Tucker), Brett Butler (Lilburn) and Shane Seig (Tucker) finished 18th, 23rd and 28th.

Derek Ellis, of Chatsworth, won Saturday nights 2010 Cleveland (TN) Speedway season opener. The nights Super Late Model 30-lap feature produced three lead changes and a hard-charge from young William Thomas (aka. WILLY-T) whom started 13th in a field of fifteen starters. Jake Knowles set fast time blazing a 13:528 lap during qualifying time trials. Knowles went on to win heat #1.

Korey Ruble won the Pro Late Model Rattler 125 at South Alabama Speedway and made it through Ricky Brooks' "Room of Doom" tech inspection afterwards. Second place finisher Bubba Pollard wasn't so lucky. Pollard was thrown out over a valve spring discrepency which moved 14-year old Stephen Nasse into the runner up spot and put Brandon Johnson in third.
Pollard's #18 had a Johnny Pruitt engine under the hood which featured valve springs legal in the Georgia Asphalt Series, per Mickey Cain. Unfortunately for Pollard and car-owner Ronnie Sanders, South Alabama Speedway rules are that a Chevrolet crate engine must have Chevrolet valve springs. After several calls to Pruitt and Mickey Cain, it was determined that although there may be no significant advantage, they were not the mandated valve springs and he was disqualified.
Jeff Fultz won the Super Late Model Rattler 250 Sunday, and Pollard was second. Chase Elliott led part of the race and finished fourth.
< Final finishing order of the Rattler 250:
Position Car # Name Laps
1 67 Jeff Fultz 250
2 18 Bubba Pollard 250
3 99 Casey Smith 250
4 9 Chase Elliott 250

6 49 Ryan Lawler 250
7 23 Jeremy Rice 250
8 182 Donnie Wilson 249

James 'Redd' Griffin gets pumped up every time he brings the renowned World of Outlaws Late Model Series to his Screven Motor Speedway.
And judging by the sweet offer he's come up with to generate more buzz about the national tour's third annual visit to his Peach State track on Sat., March 20, Griffin wants to make sure fans from far-and-wide will have an economical opportunity to see first-hand why the Outlaws thrill him so much.
The burly track owner known for his outgoing personality has set a price of just $20 for all general admission tickets to the blockbuster evening of action, which features a 50-lap WoO LMS A-Main that pays $10,000 to its winner. Billed as "Redd's Stimulus Program," the great deal will be one of the biggest bargains of the 2010 WoO LMS -- and Griffin hopes it will help attract a standing-room-only crowd to witness the country's brightest dirt Late Model stars battle at the three-eighths-mile Screven oval.
"I want to make this show a great value for everyone -- especially the people in our area," said Griffin, who has also scheduled a 35-lap National Late Model Series event with a $3,000 top prize and a $1,000-to-win Super Street feature on the WoO LMS undercard.

Georgia Racing Hall of Fame member Charlie Mincey raced against the best of the best at the fastest and most legendary tracks in the state and in the south. Race in and race out, he proved to be a force to be reckoned with on any track he raced at.
All this from an early start running moonshine from the hills of North Georgia that would lead not only to victory lane, but even to the silver screen as a stunt driver on a pair of Hollywood films.
You can read all about Mincey's career at Georgia Racing History.com.

The highlight of the Bandeleros racing at Las Vegas Motor Speedway was seeing young Chris Trickle winning the feature. Chris is the grandson of Dick Trickle’s brother, Chuck, who has resided in Las Vegas for more than 40 years. Chris’ dad - also named Chris - was an excellent Las Vegas late model driver. However, he was shot in a random shooting in Las Vegas. He remained in a coma for more than a year before passing away. His shooter was never apprehended. - from Randy Lewis, Alberta’s #1 Trackchaser

The BIG lawsuit is coming at that AZ drag race where a loose tire killed a spectator. The next BIG lawsuit will be when a tire or a part or a car goes thru a rusty fence and gets into the stands.
I think the last fan to die at Indianapolis was sitting in the top row, and a tire took him out. The last time I heard of a dirt car going into the stands it got stopped about row 13, killing two I think.
