Southern Race Week (Wed. 7-8 PM) is going to kick off 2010 with a bang. SRW Host William Barber and the SRW panel will discuss this weekend's Ice Cold Shriners Bowl at Lanier National Speedway and the Ice Bowl at Talladega Short Track. In addition, Shawn Parker with the Charlotte based Dirt Track Racing School will be on the show. Dirt Track Racing School is getting ready to announce a lease program for Dirt Late Models in 2010 and the upcoming 2-Day Open Wheel School with Open Wheel and ARCA driver Erin Crocker.
Southern Race Week airs on Wednesday evenings at 7 - 8 PM on 96.7 The Legend in Metro Atlanta. You can also listen online at www.967thelegend.com

Talladega Short Track officials are readying for the famed Ice Bowl event coming up this weekend at the 1/3 mile clay oval. The race will live up to its billed name of the “Ice Bowl” as cold conditions are forecasted for the weekend, but dry conditions are also on the menu.
“The Ice Bowl always throws some kind of a twist with the weather,” stated TST owners Lynn Phillips and Alfred Gurley. “It’s just another chapter to the fabled race.”
Rumors have surfaced about the race being postponed, BUT that is NOT the case. The race will be ran this weekend, its’ originally scheduled date.
Action gets underway on Thursday with gates opening at 9AM and practice scheduled to begin at 12 Noon. Qualifying and heats Sat., features at noon Sun.
For more information: (256) 831-1413 www.talladegashorttrack.com

Red Farmer, age 77, was recently admitted to a Bessemer, Ala., hospital for treatment of double pneumonia, and may miss the Ice Bowl. He won a heat race at TST last summer. http://nascar.speedtv.com/article/cup-father-time-eats-reds-dust/

Lanier National Speedway is going to welcome the 2010 racing season in style, hosting the 3rd Annual Ice Cold Shriners Bowl Presented by Plumbers, Pipefitters, and Service Technicians from the Local Union 72, Sat. and Sun. NASCAR Sprint Cup driver David Ragan will be racing in the $2,000 to win Pro Late Model Race.
Ragan won the ARCA race at Lanier in May, 2005, from the pole, and finished fifth last January in the Shriners Bowl.
Ragan will also be giving fans the ride of their life Sat., in a specialty built two-seater truck, for a $50 donation going directly to the Shiners’ Hospitals.
When the Super Trucks start their feature, Ragan will be racing, and a ride with him in an actual race is up for bid on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170425274763&ru=http://shop.ebay.com:80/170425274763_W0QQ_fviZ1&_rdc=1
Bid was $385 Tues.
There's also a helmet autographed by the Roush drivers being auctioned.
In addition to the large turnout of Pro Late Model racers competing for $2000 to win, local divisions consisting of the action packed Open Wheel Modifieds, Super Trucks, Iceman, Renegades, Legends, Bandoleros, Mini-Stocks, and Pro Challenge will run features.
The 3rd Annual Ice Cold Shriners Bowl includes entertainment and comedy from the Shiners’ clowns and parade.

Legends will race at Lanier Speedway Saturday and Sunday, and at Watermelon Capital Jan. 16. The Winter Flury, with double features, is Jan. 30, followed by the 2009 Awards Banquet.

Lanier's 2010 schedule is at http://www.lanierspeedway.com/schedule.html
The Super Six Series for pro late models, the Jim Garrison Memorial, Dukes of Hazzard Night with Ben "Cooter" Jones, and Home Grown Tomato Night are back, and there will be 10 "Lincoln Nights" with $5 admission and racing only for Legends, Bandos, Mini Cup, and Pro Challenge teams. Free rides most nights with Donnie Clack in the "Big Cheese" school bus.

The Gresham Motorsports Park schedule came out this week, with three surprises:
1 - Only two touring series are on the schedule - the NASCAR Camping World East (Aug. 28) and the Pro Cup Series twice (Mar. 27, Oct. 23). We hoped for more.
2 - The World Crown 300 (Nov. 14) will feature a super late model race, with 150-lap pro LM race Sat. (Nov. 13).
3 - Seven Gresham-promoted super and pro LM one-day shows, including local Renegade, Truck and Iceman divisions. Hopefully, the GAS Series, CRA, and PASS South will become involved in these shows.
Lanier and Gresham have coordinated the schedules, with Lanier racing Legends only when Gresham has a show, except for June 19 when Lanier has the pro LMS and Gresham's has super LMs.
The full schedule is at www.GreshamMotorsportsPark.com and http://www.georgiastockcarracing.com

Last issue we published:
"The Pro All Stars Series (PASS) 2010 schedule includes Gresham Motorsports Park June 5 and Oct. 2." These are not on the track's schedule.
Dan Elliott, General Manager of GMP, told Speed51.com in December the decision to not have PASS at the track in 2010 wasn’t due to a rift between the track and the series.
“I was under the impression you had to have a contract in order to cancel a contract,” said Elliott. “We talked back and forth and I have one lying on my desk that hasn’t been signed. He (Tom Mayberry, President of PASS) didn’t sign it and I didn’t sign it. We really never reached an agreement."

Rocky posted the truth on 4m.com: "Jesus himself would be unable to protect racers from spending more than they can afford." http://www.4m.net/showthread.php?t=149894

Forum posts hint that there will be a new relationship in 2010 involving Dublin's 441 Speedway and Cochran Speedway.
"Rules meeting will be Jan 16th at La Quinta banquet room in Dublin on Hwy 441 exit. Check website for times your class will be dicussed."

National Speed Sport News reported in their December issue that the ASA Late Model Series will not have a southern division in 2010. According to the report, the series cited economic times and the inability to draw full fields as their reasoning for not having a southern division. http://www.speed51.com

North Georgia Speedway's owners are still looking for a 2010 promoter. Contact Dianne Young at 706-226-3367. Dianne Young and Fletcher Young will make the final decision on the 2010 promoter.

SpeedTV reports Michael Waltrip may drive some Camping World Truck Series races for team owner Billy Ballew. Waltrip is going to be a part-time Cup driver, and is entered in the Daytona 500 and his 25th NASCAR season in 2010. He's won the 500 twice.

Ricky Brooks, of Pensacola, FL, will be the Technical Director for the 2010 GAS Series season.
Brooks has been given legendary status with some rulings from his "room of doom" at the Snowball Derby, not hesitating to DQ the winners and biggest stars.
His legend grew at Five Flags' final points race, when he DQ'd the apparent points champ, called the runner-up at home at 12:30 a.m., and told him to bring his car back to the track for a tech check. The runner-up left early in the morning with the title.
At this year's Derby, Brooks' tech crew did their work before qualifying and the race, took away a second qualifying lap from a few violators, and had no post-race DQ actions.
Brooks did put a new and strange law into the mix at the Derby: No burnouts or donuts after the race - and winner Kyle Busch meekly complied. www.Speed51.com

Max Gresham, of Griffin, who's still in high school, will compete in a select number of ARCA events this season including races at Iowa Speedway (July 10) and Rockingham Speedway (October 9). “This is going to be a great opportunity for me and my team,” said Gresham, who's 16.
In addition to Gresham, Indy Car star Danica Patrick will test the ARCA waters in 2010.
Gresham won two ASA Southeast Asphalt Tour events, and had three Top-10 finishes in the Joe Gibbs Racing NASCAR Camping World Series East division entry in 2009.

Racing returns to Rockingham Speedway on March 13-14 with the first-ever Chump Car 24 hours of Rockingham. The Spring Fling Legends and Bandolero challenge series also kicks off on March 14 on the Little Rock. For more information on upcoming events and attractions at Rockingham Speedway, go online to www.rockinghamspeedway.com

The Legends and Bandolero racers will have a full 38-race season at Concord (NC) Speedway starting Friday, March 12. This might affect the Thursday Thunder car counts at Atlanta Motor Speedway, if Charlotte area racers go only to Concord.

Legends manufacturer 600 Racing is now U.S. Legends Car International. Only Bruton Smith knows why.

The NASCAR competitor, who won the Snowball Derby on December 6th at Five Flags Speedway, was also victorious in his late model this past season in the RedBud 300 on July 27th at Anderson Speedway and the Winchester 400 on October 18th at Winchester Speedway. Bad news: After 13 Seasons the Mid-Atlantic Championship Series for dirt late models has Suspended Operation.
The Tennessee Thunder Dirt Car Series has shut down, and Series Director Brad Byrd is the new Series Director for the Southern Allstars Dirt Late Model Series. Kelley Carlton will remain as SAS Race Director along with Rusty Carlton as Lead Tech Official.
Mike Kittrell and J.J. Templeton, along with Kentucky Dirt Late Model promoter Chris Tilley, have formed the new racing group, Volunteer Racing Series, aimed at keeping East Tennessee racing strong and competitive.

Brandon Reed, of Georgia Racing History.com, asked a group of journalists and other racing people their opinion on the most historic moment or happening for Georgia racing (or outside the state, if the effect is big enough) for 2009, good or bad, and, a prediction for what could be the most historic moment in 2010. My contribution:
Most historic moment or happening = Renovation of Peach State into Gresham Motorports Park
Most historic moment we see in 2010 = hopefully, big crowds at GMP
Happening = young graduates of Legends racing moving into late models and winning - especially Chase Elliott (GAS Champion), Casey Roderick (Lanier Super Six Champion), TJ Reiad (race winner, 3rd in both Series), Tyler Millwood (competitive in dirt and asphalt).
Happening = AMS gets Labor Day race, good weather, and best crowd in years
Rising star: Andrew Smith, from Pooler, former Legends National Champion and Golden Wheel Award winner of the Humpy’s Heroes Driver Development Program www.andrewsmithracing.com
Outside GA: Birmingham closes, and Nashville near dead. Two of the last remaining big old fairgrounds tracks.
Things to worry about: Three dirt tracks - North Georgia Speedway, Sugar Creek Raceway, and Douglas Motorsports Park - end '09 seasons early, and face uncertain '10.
Growing: Friday night drags at AMS started with 10 nights in '08, now 17 nights in '10. Big crowds of racers and fans.

NEW DIRT TRACK BEING BUILT!!!!!
Cochran, Georgia Is getting a new race track, land has been purchased and all permits will be ready to be picked up the first week of January.
No!!!!. (THIS IS NOT A RUMOR) it is a fact. Two business owners in Cochran and one out of town invester have gotten together and decided to build a new dirt racing facility. Ground breaking should start about mid January weather permitting.
Completion date not determined as of yet.The name of the new racing facility is going through the legal process. As soon as the name goes through the legal process the website will be announced and up and running, with all the step by step pictures of the facility being built and updates on special announcements, and finish dates.

The editors of Frontstretch.com discuss Bruton Smith's options on moving a race to his Kentucky Speedway, and how Dover and Atlanta may be involved: http://www.frontstretch.com/md/28383/

Promotion idea: “Competition cautions”. This type of yellow flag is used for just one reason. They want to close up the competition midway in the race. The crowd loves it. It makes the race much more entertaining for the fan.
It takes what might be a runaway contest and tightens things up. The casual fan likes that. The casual fan is what racetracks are trying to attract. They’ve already got the hard-core fan. They need to keep that fan that might just as easily spend his or her time at some other activity coming back to the track. Oval tracks could learn several lessons from the “short track off-road” crowd.

13 finished on the lead lap. The winner's purse $22,500.

In only his third start ever at Five Flags Speedway, Pro Late Model driver TJ Reaid, of Acworth, made his mark on the Snowflake 100 for Pro Late Models, setting fast time in qualifying with a 16.667 lap around the 1/2 mile oval.
He ran in the top 5 most of the evening, swapping the lead with a couple drivers. On lap 96, Reaid was able to get by race leader
Augie Grill. After a caution, Reaid was able to maintain the lead until lap 98 when Grill took the lead. "I was hoping Grill would race me clean but apparently that didn't happen," said Reaid, who eventually finished in the third position.
Reaid's plans for 2010 are up in the air. "We are leaning toward running Super Late Models mainly next season and possibly the Blizzard Series at Five Flags," adds Reaid.
Says a race fan: "If Augie keeps pushing folks around, he's going to get some serious payback. He has the best equipment out there but he can't win by skill and race drivers clean. He can only win by knocking people around. He's the dirtiest driver I've seen in a while."

Chase Elliott, who turned 14 just a week before the year’s biggest Late Model race, qualified 10th, ran up front with the nation’s best drivers, and recorded an impressive seventh place finish in his first “Derby” attempt.
The second-generation driver made it a double header weekend with a start in Saturday’s Allen Turner Snowflake 100 Pro Late Model race. Elliott started 15th and survived a wreck-fest to finish 12th.
Elliott’s top-ten run at Five Flags Speedway put the final touches on an already impressive rookie resume. In 31 combined Pro and Super Late Model starts this season, Elliott recorded four wins, 13 top-five, and 24 top-10 finishes. Of those seven finishes outside of the top-10, three were DNF’s due to wrecks or mechanical failures. www.ChaseElliott.com.
