Doug Turnbull, a major contributor to the Allan Vigil Ford Lincoln Mercury 120 Saturdays on News/Talk 750 WSB in Atlanta and online at wsbradio.com, is a Website writer for www.Frontstretch.com His latest is a great report on the only NASCAR team based in Toccoa, GA: "The difficulties that Carter Simo Racing face are no different that what 3/4ths of the Truck Series, 4/5ths of the Nationwide Series, and the majority of most racing series around the world are battling today. Even small dirt racing teams stand little chance at victory when they try to race Bobby Labonte and Richard Childress-owned entries when national series arrive at their tracks. Fortunately for most parties involved, the gold at the end of the rainbow is not winning – it is simply trying to build on past results and survive." Much more at http://www.frontstretch.com

Veteran racer becomes oldest driver to win a NVRA Championship! NASCAR will have its oldest Sprint Cup champion ever if Mark Martin can win the crown this year at age 50, however, a veteran racer from Georgia by the name of Woody Moore has won a points championship at age 75. Woody began his racing career in Hawkinsville, GA, way back in 1953 driving a 1940 Ford coupe (which he drove to the track and drove back home after the race). At age 75, Woody Moore races in the National Vintage Racing Association’s Late Model Modified division against men young enough to be his grandson. “I knew my chances of winning a championship were getting smaller each year, so I made a commitment to go all out to win it in 2009”, said Moore in a recent interview. Woody stepped out of his ’55 Chevy and into a bright yellow 1966 Chevrolet Nova for the 2009 racing season. With three feature race wins and numerous second place finishes to his credit, Moore entered the October 10th race at South Georgia MotorSports Park with a virtual lock on the NVRA points championship. Woody started dead last in the 20 lap feature race at SGMP and finished in second place to capture the 2009 title in the Late Model Modified division. At age 75 Woody Moore became the oldest driver to win a points championship with the NVRA and proves the point that age is no barrier to achieving ones goals.
Michael Blount, of Sumrall, MS, drove to an upset win on Friday night at South Mississippi Speedway in the Topless Fall Nationals 40 for the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National Tour. Blount started second, took the lead on lap one, and led all 40 laps to take the victory. Derrick Rainey, of Powder Springs, finished fourth in the Hays Family Racing/Barto Enterprises Warrior. Ronnie Johnson, of Chattanooga, TN, was sixth in the Miller Brothers Coal Warrior, and 15-year-old Joseph Joiner of Milton, FL finished seventh in the Joiner Racing GRT.
Eric Cooley, of Fulton, MS, was crowned the 2009 NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National Champion, and will receive a $20,000 check at the NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS Awards Banquet on December 9 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Tampa, FL. The 18-year-old driver became the youngest National Champion in dirt late model history.

Pollard was able to battle back for the eleventh place finish. Pollard also competed in the "Run What You Brung" Open Modified event and finished 2nd in the Mississippi based Jimmy Hammond Motorsports open wheel racer. A season spent criss-crossing the country comes down to two racers - Steve Francis and Josh Richards - who know each other well – very well – in a virtual dead-heat for a $100,000 championship prize entering the third annual World of Outlaws World Finals on Nov. 5-7 at The Dirt Track @ Lowe's Motor Speedway. Considering the nip-and-tuck nature of the '09 WoO LMS points race, it's very likely that the two drivers will take their battle right down to the last lap of the Nov. 7 A-Main. They have, after all, produced remarkably similar performance records. Richards has seven wins, Francis six. Francis has nine runner-up finishes, Richards six. Francis has 24 top-five finishes in 37 events, Richards 21. Richards pulled off a late-race pass of Francis to win on July 16 at Huron, S.D., and Francis returned the favor on Sept. 5 at Tri-City. Both drivers have 31 top-10 finishes, five fast-time honors and failed to qualify through a heat race just once (resulting in the lone provisional starting spots each has used this season). Richards has held at least a share of the points lead after 23 events, Francis after 11 – and they were tied for the top spot after the July 8 ‘Gopher 50' at Minnesota's Deer Creek Speedway. www.lowesmotorspeedway.com - Lowe's Motor Speedway ticket office at 1-800-455-FANS. www.worldofoutlaws.com

Up next on Elliott’s schedule is the 27th annual All American Weekend, October 30 through November 1, at the Fairgrounds Speedway at Nashville. Elliott will wrap up the 2009 Georgia Asphalt Series where he currently leads the championship standings and could capture his first Late Model title. Elliott will also run in the CRA Super Series $10,000 to win race 250-lap feature. www.ChaseElliott.com.
