Doug Turnbull, a major contributor to the Allan Vigil Ford Lincoln Mercury 120 Saturdays on News/Talk 750 WSB in Atlanta and online at wsbradio.com, is a Website writer for www.Frontstretch.com
His latest is a great report on the only NASCAR team based in Toccoa, GA:
"The difficulties that Carter Simo Racing face are no different that what 3/4ths of the Truck Series, 4/5ths of the Nationwide Series, and the majority of most racing series around the world are battling today. Even small dirt racing teams stand little chance at victory when they try to race Bobby Labonte and Richard Childress-owned entries when national series arrive at their tracks. Fortunately for most parties involved, the gold at the end of the rainbow is not winning – it is simply trying to build on past results and survive."

Opening night activities for Round 2 of the Fastrak Dirt Late Model Racing Series $250,000 Grand Nationals at Volunteer (TN) Speedway are in the books, and Jensen Ford of Piney Flats, Tenn., at 13.373-seconds, set fast-time over 49 competitors representing 10 states. It's a new track record. Brandon Haley, Lavonia, was fourth at 13.490.

Veteran racer becomes oldest driver to win a NVRA Championship!
NASCAR will have its oldest Sprint Cup champion ever if Mark Martin can win the crown this year at age 50, however, a veteran racer from Georgia by the name of Woody Moore has won a points championship at age 75. Woody began his racing career in Hawkinsville, GA, way back in 1953 driving a 1940 Ford coupe (which he drove to the track and drove back home after the race).
At age 75, Woody Moore races in the National Vintage Racing Association’s Late Model Modified division against men young enough to be his grandson. “I knew my chances of winning a championship were getting smaller each year, so I made a commitment to go all out to win it in 2009”, said Moore in a recent interview.
Woody stepped out of his ’55 Chevy and into a bright yellow 1966 Chevrolet Nova for the 2009 racing season. With three feature race wins and numerous second place finishes to his credit, Moore entered the October 10th race at South Georgia MotorSports Park with a virtual lock on the NVRA points championship. Woody started dead last in the 20 lap feature race at SGMP and finished in second place to capture the 2009 title in the Late Model Modified division.
At age 75 Woody Moore became the oldest driver to win a points championship with the NVRA and proves the point that age is no barrier to achieving ones goals.

Michael Blount, of Sumrall, MS, drove to an upset win on Friday night at South Mississippi Speedway in the Topless Fall Nationals 40 for the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National Tour. Blount started second, took the lead on lap one, and led all 40 laps to take the victory. Derrick Rainey, of Powder Springs, finished fourth in the Hays Family Racing/Barto Enterprises Warrior. Ronnie Johnson, of Chattanooga, TN, was sixth in the Miller Brothers Coal Warrior, and 15-year-old Joseph Joiner of Milton, FL finished seventh in the Joiner Racing GRT.

Eric Cooley, of Fulton, MS, was crowned the 2009 NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National Champion, and will receive a $20,000 check at the NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS Awards Banquet on December 9 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Tampa, FL. The 18-year-old driver became the youngest National Champion in dirt late model history.

Grant Jordan's Stolen Racecar recovered - minus the skin.
These stories seldom end well, but Jordan, of Bowman, got most of his crate racer and his truck back. Tony Russell's truck has been recovered as well, but the truck has been pretty much destroyed. Police do have a suspect.

Boyd’s Speedway will host the 2009 Tennessee Thunder DirtCar Series Finale on Saturday, featuring a $5,000 to win $350 to start main event feature.
Due to cooler temperatures in October, track officials have announced that gates will open at 2pm and racing is set to get underway at 5pm. Support Classes include Crate, A-Hobby, B-Hobby, Pony, and Front Wheel Drive. Adult General Admission will be $15 with kids age 7 to 12 $5 and Pit Passes $30.
The tight Thunder Series points battle between Tommy Kerr of Maryville, TN and Billy Ogle Jr. of Knoxville, TN will fittingly come down to the richest racing weekend of the season for the series as well as for Boyd’s Speedway. Ogle has a sixty-nine point advantage. Kerr leads the Sunoco Quick Six for Six Series by one-hundred points. Kerr and Ogle have one series win each at the track.
The event will mark the series fifth over-all visit to the ultra-fast, extremely competitive red clay bullring situated squarely on the Georgia / Tennessee state line in the historic Civil War town of Ringgold, GA. Previous series winners at Boyd’s include Randy Weaver (6/26/09), Billy Ogle Jr. (5/22/09), Tommy Kerr (8/8/08), and Anthony White (6/27/08).

Despite an 11th place finish in Sunday's Alabama 200 at South Alabama Speedway, Bubba Pollard was able to win the Triple Bonus money with his wins at Five Flags Speedway and Mobile International Speedway the previous weekend. Pollard qualified on the pole in the Pitboxes.com/HRI/RRonnie Sanders Motorsports Chevy Impala and ran in the top 3 for the first 138 laps. Under caution, Pollard was hit by another racer, damaging his car. Pollard went to the pits for repairs and returned to the speedway several laps down. Pollard was able to battle back for the eleventh place finish.
Pollard also competed in the "Run What You Brung" Open Modified event and finished 2nd in the Mississippi based Jimmy Hammond Motorsports open wheel racer.
Next up for Pollard Motorsports is the Miller Lite 100 for Super Late Models at Mobile International Speedway Saturday evening. Talladega Short Track officials have notified the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series that they have cancelled the $10,000-to-win Red Top Auto Auctions Dega 100 that was scheduled for this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. The event will not be rescheduled during the 2009 season. TST officials said weather forecasts for Thursday and Friday were calling for three inches of rain on already saturated grounds at the track.

Monolith Companies, of Alpharetta, will sponsor the Pole Position Award for the 26th-Annual World Crown 300 at Gresham Motorsports Park. The company – which specializes in the interior design, renovation, and construction of hotels – will provide a commemorative plaque and a $500 cash award for the driver who sets the fastest time in qualifying for the Sunday, November 15

This weekend’s PASS South season finale at Greenville-Pickens Speedway, a 125 lap event known as “The Howler”, will wrap up the 2009 PASS South season with the kind of action packed super late model racing that the fans of the half mile track have come to expect over the years when the Pro All Stars Series comes to town.
Ben Rowe dominated the four- race PASS National Championship series with three wins and one third place run to claim that title, and his win at South Boston further expanded his PASS South point lead. Rowe has emerged as the clear favorite to join his father Mike in the PASS record book as a PASS South Champion.
Time trials at 5:00 PM. On-track trick-or-treat meet and greet as well as the kid’s Halloween costume contest at 7:00 PM,. The Howler 125 at approximately 8:00 PM. www.greenvillepickens.com www.racewithpass.com

A season spent criss-crossing the country comes down to two racers - Steve Francis and Josh Richards - who know each other well – very well – in a virtual dead-heat for a $100,000 championship prize entering the third annual World of Outlaws World Finals on Nov. 5-7 at The Dirt Track @ Lowe's Motor Speedway.
Considering the nip-and-tuck nature of the '09 WoO LMS points race, it's very likely that the two drivers will take their battle right down to the last lap of the Nov. 7 A-Main. They have, after all, produced remarkably similar performance records. Richards has seven wins, Francis six. Francis has nine runner-up finishes, Richards six. Francis has 24 top-five finishes in 37 events, Richards 21. Richards pulled off a late-race pass of Francis to win on July 16 at Huron, S.D., and Francis returned the favor on Sept. 5 at Tri-City. Both drivers have 31 top-10 finishes, five fast-time honors and failed to qualify through a heat race just once (resulting in the lone provisional starting spots each has used this season). Richards has held at least a share of the points lead after 23 events, Francis after 11 – and they were tied for the top spot after the July 8 ‘Gopher 50' at Minnesota's Deer Creek Speedway. www.lowesmotorspeedway.com - Lowe's Motor Speedway ticket office at 1-800-455-FANS. www.worldofoutlaws.com

Thirteen-year-old Chase Elliott was excited to return to Indiana’s historic Winchester Speedway for his second start at the half-mile asphalt oval and his first start in the 38th annual Winchester 400. After starting sixth (15.284 seconds/117.770 mph) in the No. 9 Aaron’s Dream Machine Ford, Elliott took the checkers with a very respectable eighth place finish behind race winner Kyle Busch.
In addition to eighth-placce money, Elliott got a $1000 Travel Bonus from the CRA Contingency Awards. Winner Kyle Busch got $6150 Lap Leader Bonus Money.
Up next on Elliott’s schedule is the 27th annual All American Weekend, October 30 through November 1, at the Fairgrounds Speedway at Nashville. Elliott will wrap up the 2009 Georgia Asphalt Series where he currently leads the championship standings and could capture his first Late Model title. Elliott will also run in the CRA Super Series $10,000 to win race 250-lap feature. www.ChaseElliott.com.

CRA Nashville Entries: 37 entries as of 10/20/09, including:
Max Gresham, Griffin, GA - Gresham & Associates Ford
Bubba Pollard, Senoia, GA - Lynch Tree Service/Pollard Motorsports Chevrolet
Allen Karnes, Sharpsburg, GA - Allen Karnes Racing Chevrolet
Chris Gabehart, Kennesaw, GA - Reaid Motorsports/Port City Racecars/MEP/ARP Bodies Chev.
Chase Elliott, Dawsonville, GA - Aaron's Ford

16 year old Ross Kenseth, the son of NASCAR star Matt Kenseth, is entered in next weekend’s CRA Nashville All American event. It will be Kenseth’s first race with the CRA Super Series. Kenseth is coming off a very impressive 2009 season, winning the Big 8 Series Championship with a series record five victories, winning a National Short Track Championship, and winning a Wisconsin State Championship.
Two time All American winner Freddie Query will also be back at the Fairgrounds next weekend, but not behind the wheel. He will be with protégé Johanna Long, the 17 year old Pensacola native who has turned many heads with her driving abilities the past two seasons.
