Taking the lead on lap 23 after starting seventh, Ray Cook, of Brasstown, NC led the rest of the way to score his first career Dixie Shootout win Saturday at Dixie Speedway. The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series sanctioned event win for Cook was his fifth this year as he collected $10,000 for the win in the 20th Annual Dixie Shootout, which was sponsored by Coal America’s Energy. Dan Schlieper of Sullivan, WI finished second followed by new track record holder Earl Pearson Jr. of Jacksonville, FL, Clint Smith of Senoia, GA and Jimmy Owens of Newport, TN.
“I have to thank the Good Lord for a good and safe race, Mickey Smith did a whale of a job getting this track ready tonight with all the rain they have had here the last two weeks, it was extremely racy and I hoped the crowd enjoyed the show,” said the 37-year old Cook who currently stands sixth in the Lucas Oil Series points standings after 39 events. The fan favorite signed autographs for 90 minutes after the race.

Cleveland Speedway operator Monty Morrow has leased the North Georgia Speedway in Chatsworth for the past two season. He tried to make a switch to Fridays, hopefully paired with the Sat. shows at Cleveland, but was unsuccessful, in part due to the Friday successes at Boyd's Speedway near Chattanooga. Morrow has only had a handful of shows at North Georgia, and the 5th Annual Turkey Rumble Nov. 14 is on the website but has not been promoted otherwise.
The 2009 NGA schedule included three Southern All Stars shows, won by Chris Madden in March, Randy Weaver in April, and "rain" in July, and a $10,000 to win Lucas Oil show in July won by Joe Armes.
The Roberts family, which owns the track, says Morrow will not be leasing the track in 2010, and they are actively looking for a new promoter and leasee. http://www.northgeorgiaspeedway.com

Lavonia has the Georgia State championships Friday and Saturday, highlighted by a $2,000 to win FASTRAK Crate Late Model race, a $1200 to win super LM race, and a $5000 to win Southern All Stars race. Lavonia Speedway will also be recognizing the top five 2009 point champions for Hartwell & Lavonia Speedways during the festivities. John Dykes, owner and promoter of South Alabama Speedway, is well-known for increasing payouts "on the fly" when larger car counts than expected show up for races. That trend will continue this weekend for the Super Late Model support race on Saturday, preceding The 3rd Annual Alabama 200. While the Pro Late Model Alabama 200 on Sunday will pay a minimum of $7,500 to win, with over $12,000 possible with bonuses, the Super Late Model Alabama 125 on Saturday will feature the sliding pay scale. 14 or less cars entered means the SLM race will pay $4,000 to win, while 25 entries or more means the show will pay $5,000 or more to the winner.
Bubba Pollard won the Series' first two Pro Late Model events held at Pensacola and Mobile, and hopes to capture the $1500.00 bonus payout. www.southalabamaspeedway.com www.z3sports.com

The Golden Isles Showdown on the Coast features a 100-lap National Late Model Series race, 100 laps and $12,000 to win. The show kicks off Friday with five heat races for NLMS drivers, plus heats and features for Super Streets, Open wheel Mods, and TQ LMs.
Saturday is the NLMS 100-lap feature, preceded by three consis. Each night, two bikes will be given to kids. Adm. $20. http://www.goldenislesspeedway.com

Justin Lofton and Parker Kligerman concluded the 2009 race season at Rockingham Speedway this weekend, where Lofton was able to clinch his career first ARCA RE/MAX Series Championship by a margin of five points, the equivalent of one finishing position or one lap led.
Beyond the racetrack, Kligerman graduated from high school, moved from his childhood home of Westport, CT, to Charlotte, NC, and began his Freshman year at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
Lofton's car owner, Eddie Sharp, was quizzed as to whether or not he will attempt to defend the 2009 Championship next year with Lofton as a driver in the Eddie Sharp Racing stable:
"My job is not to marry him it's to date him," said Sharp. "My job is to give these kids an opportunity, prepare them for the next step, and then watch them go on. I'm supposed to kick him [Justin Lofton] out of the nest. It's not easy to do. As much as I would like to have him back, or maybe even to move forward with him, right now I need to worry about what I am doing in the ARCA RE/MAX Series. It was my job to give him the opportunity. Everybody who goes through my program and makes it to the next level lets me know that I've succeeded. It's a bitter-sweet thing. You turn your kids loose when they turn of age and I got to turn one loose."
Casey Roderick qualified third and finished second in his career-first ARCA RE/MAX Series race at Rockingham. The Bill Elliott Development Driver, who has previous experience in super late model and legend car competition, used the Rockingham race to gain experience in full bodied stock cars. The race proved successful for the young driver as an early race pit stop allowed him to work his way from the rear of the field to the front, gaining experience in the area of passing cars. He battled side-by-side with eventual Series champion Justin Lofton on the white flag lap in a battle that may not have turned out as well for lesser driver:
"I knew it was close going into turn 1," said Roderick. "I probably could have given him a little bit more room and I hope he's not mad at me. I didn't want to get too close because these cars are very aero-dependent so when you get right up next to somebody side-by-side it takes the air off of the car on the inside and they can get very loose and get up into you and cause you to wreck. I had to be careful over there but luckily we came out with no issues. My spotter said 'easy, easy' because he knew I was close and I knew I was close. His right side door was inside of my window net so once I knew he was that close I moved up the racetrack to give him some room."
After the race, Lofton noted the skill level of Roderick:
"I was getting greedy," Lofton said of his last lap move. "I was getting really greedy. I saw an opportunity and I thought my car was a little bit better than the 51. I got in there and I have to thank Casey Roderick for being as good of a driver as he is. He could have turned me." http://www.arcaracing.com

The Georgia Asphalt Series and South Georgia Motorsports Park, citing the economic times, have cancelled the scheduled Oct. 24 show. GAS will now wrap up its season as part of the All American Weekend Oct. 30-31 and Nov. 1 , at the Nashville Fairgrounds Spedway. www.lanierspeedway.com www.racesgmp.com

Paul Antley, of Dacula, was the leading race winner in the NASCAR Rookie of the Year Award program in 2009, with 11 trips to Victory Lane at Lanier. He was the only rookie driver to post double-digit Victory Lane appearances at the NASCAR-sanctioned short tracks. He won the Lanier truck div. championship.
Justin Ashley was the Greenville Pickens Speedway top rookie.

The entire Lance family would like to thank everyone for your support during the inaugural Tommy Roberts Memorial Race. There was a fantastic turn out for this event and some great racing. It was wonderful to see the Roberts family in attendance for this event. Of course it could’nt be a Tommy Roberts event without a #1-A car on the speedway, so it was good to see Brant and his father Marshall in attendance as well, as they had a longstanding friendship with the Roberts family. Another Tommy Roberts highlight was Chad Hoopaugh’s victory in the Modified Street. Chad grew up idolizing Tommy so it was good see him take home a win in his honor.
Next and last race of the season for Hartwell Speedway is Oct. 24, going out with a bang with a Powder Puff race. Ladies - get yourself a ride and come join in on the fun.

LEGENDS NATIONALS at LANIER:
There's great coverage by Jason Stix Buckley and www.speed51.com at http://speed51.com/2009_Stories/Legends_Bandos/Trackside_Now_Lanier_10-10.html
Some highlights: Bubba Harry, of Griffin, won the Roadster Nationals. Harry was banned, maybe "for life," after showing his temper at AMS this summer.
Scott Hensley, of Tyrone, won the Young Lions Div., and Cody Haskins, of Marietta, won the Legends Semi-Pro title.
Clay Hair, of Charlotte, won the Masters Div. from the pole. With his win, he also became the 2009 INEX National Points champ. Jeff Haynie, of Zebulon, was second. Kyle Lowry, of Covington, won the Pro Division.
Buckley's minute-by-minute coverage of the Pro Div. last five laps:
10:33 Five laps remain with Andrew Smith (Pooler, GA) leading Doug Stevens (McDonough) and Dylan Ames (Harvest, AL).
10:33 YELLOW FLAG: LAP 44 - Dylan Ames and Doug Stevens made contact, sending Stevens into a spin. Officials have decided Ames will go to the rear of the field for the contact.
10:35 Top five: Andrew Smith, Kyle Lowery, Nick Pistone (Charlotte), Brian McArtle, Justin Swilling (Cohutta, GA)
10:36 GREEN FLAG
10:36 Andrew Smith held serve on the restart.
10:36 Nick Pistone has moved to second at lap 47.
10:37 Two laps remain. Nick Pistone has closed the gap on Andrew Smith.
10:37 White flag. The top four are nose to tail.
10:38 Nick Pistone has turned Andrew Smith in turn two.
10:38 CHECKERED FLAG - Nick Pistone crossed the line first, but he is being penalized for turning Andrew Smith, giving the win to Kyle Lowry.

Gresham Motorsports Park today announced an open test session for the INEX/600 Racing Series Saturday, November 7 from 1-8 p.m. It's a prelude to their opening the 26th Annual World Crown 300 weekend on Friday, November 13.

Lanier' s Young Guns Bandolero champion Dalton Robertson, age 13, of Oakwood, was hospitalized in Birmingham, with what a friend describes as "scar tissue around his esophagus." Latest report is that he's out of the hospital and "doing great."

Then comes four weeks in a hard cast, and more weeks of rehab. He's being home schooled, with help from teachers at his Landmark Christian School.
Father Shane Martin hopes he'll be back on the track in December.

Even in his worst nightmare, I don’t think David Ragan imagined a Sprint Cup season quite like this one. Just one year removed from 13th in points, he’s been without a top 10 since a 6th at the Daytona 500, dropping well out of Chase contention by early Spring. But Fontana’s been a good track for the second-generation driver – Ragan’s never finished outside the top 20 in five career starts entering Sunday – and the No. 6 UPS team had high hopes they could begin to salvage what’s left of their season.
After qualifying a disappointing 31st, it didn’t look promising for the worst-ranking Roush Fenway driver in the standings. But the car ran strong in practice and slowly moved up through the field in the race, climbing to as high as 15th by the halfway point. It looked like that’s exactly where Ragan would finish … until that late debris caution bunched up the field. The driver then made a banzai move on the ensuing restart, jumping up seven spots with a well-timed move that shot him right up into the top 10. That’s where he would stay en route to a 7th place finish, the highest non-Chaser and easily his best non-restrictor plate run of the year.
"Certainly, it means a lot,” he said of a welcome change up towards the front of the field. “Like I said, it's not what we want, but it's a step in the right direction. Top-10s lead to top 5s, and certainly they lead to wins. We just have to get consistent -- this should be a normal race for us.”
Indeed it should have, David … but as they always say, better late than never …- Tom Bowles, www.Frontstretch.com

Over 150 racecars are expected to be at the 38th Annual Winchester (IN) 400 Weekend this weekend with racing in five divisions along with the Winchester 400 for super late models. The winner takes home the special Winchester Rifle Trophy and up to $26,000.
