On the verge of clinching his first Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series National Champion, Scott Bloomquist holds a 210-point lead over his nearest rival, Jimmy Owens of Newport, TN heading into to the two-state, three-race events this weekend. The first hint of the 2010 schedule for Gresham Motorsports Park comes from the USAR Pro Cup Series (formerly Hooters Pro Cup), which will race at the former Peach State Speedway Mar. 27 and Oct. 23. The March date opens the Series' schedule. The track was once owned by Hooters, and the Series raced there from 1997 to 2007, usually twice each year. The crowds were very good, especially when the Atlanta newspapers carried advance stories. The Series raced at South Georgia in April and at Lanier, with sponsorship from Aaron's, June 27. Kyle Fowler, of Smyrna, entered at Lanier, finishing eighth, and Brett Butler, of Snellville, finished 13th. 19 cars entered. Saturday (Oct. 10) they have a 150 lap show at Rockingham. They have a TV deal with Fox Sports Network, with coverage of races at 11:00 a.m. Sunday mornings. http://www.usarprocup.comhttp://www.greshammotorsportspark.com

Kirk and Laura May, and Mays Motorsports of Athens, GA, have entered the Aaron's 150 USAR Pro Cup event at Rockingham (NC) Speedway Saturday. They will team up with The National Multiple Sclerosis Society for the event, to further MS awareness and research. NMSS will be displayed as a sponsor of the Mays USAR Pro Cup entry, along with Elite Auto Collision of Athens, and DuPont Performance Coatings. Shane Hall has been in the driver's seat for Mays Motorsports once before this season at Concord (NC) Speedway, also in a USAR Pro Cup event, in which the team finished seventh. While a top-ten result in the highly-competitive Pro Cup Series is quite an accomplishment, Hall hopes to improve on his run this time around. Mays Motorsports Crew Chief is Lee McCallister.
Seventeen-year-old Casey Roderick, of Lawrenceville, will make his ARCA RE/MAX Series debut Sunday in the American 200 at Rockingham (N.C.) Speedway, which will air same-day on SPEED at 10 p.m. He will pilot the No. 51 Dodge in a joint venture between Bill Elliott Racing and James Finch’s Phoenix Racing. “I’m really looking forward to this weekend; it’s probably the biggest of my career,” said Roderick. “We tested there two weeks ago and were fifth fastest overall. We were a little on the conservative side, and we’re going to go a little more aggressive on the setup for the race and hopefully get back on top and get a good run for Bill Elliott and for James Finch." “I am looking forward to the race Sunday,” said Roderick’s mentor, NASCAR champion Bill Elliott. “Casey has waited a long time for this opportunity, and I know he will make the best of it. I hope that a potential sponsor will be watching and ready to contact us to provide Casey an opportunity to race the full ARCA season in 2010. Casey is a talented young man that just needs a break to show what he can do”. Ernie Elliott, Inc. (EEI) is supplying the motor for the No. 51 Dodge at Rockingham. Elliott, who has provided engines for several of NASCAR’s top teams, has built a refreshed motor for Roderick in Sunday’s 200-lap race. Roderick, who made his rise through the ranks of Legends Racing, joined Bill Elliott Racing in July of 2008. Since then, Roderick has made 22 Late Model starts, including two wins, 12 top-fives and 17 top-tens. Another win, at Lanier, was lost to a DQ. James Finch's Phoenix Racing has competed in NASCAR's three top divisions since 1989, and their drivers have included Jeff Purvis, Reed Sorenson, Buckshot Jones, and many others. This season they've entered five ARCA races, with two top 10 finishes. Also entered: Brett Butler, of Lilburn Free Pennington, of Martinez, GA, driving a Bill Gerhart Chevy Chris Buescher, of Prosper TX, driving the David Ragan Fan Club Ford Beau Slocumb, of Macon, drove the #32 Wolf Pack Rentals Toyota to a 5th place finish at the ARCA race at Kansas Speedway - his first top-five in the ARCA Remax Series. He drove five ARCA races for Steve Turner, Kevin Cywinski, and Nate Thiesse - Win-Tron Racing, but is not entered at Rockingham. Beau’s next race will most likely be the World Crown 300 at the new Gresham Motorsports Park in Jefferson, GA on November 15th. The most recent ARCA winner from Georgia is the late Matt Hawkins, of Canton, who won in his first start at Iowa Speedway. The Sunday afternoon American 200, scheduled for 1:00 PM, will also feature live streaming audio coverage at ARCAracing.com. The American 200 will also air same-day on SPEED at 10:00 PM. http://www.racing-reference.info/owner?id=finchja01 www.BillElliott.com www.rockinghamspeedway.com http://www.beauslocumb.com

Reaid will be driving the Glenncast/Tru-Tech Industries/Fox Masonry/RMS Custom Machine Ford Fusion. Reuters is reporting that Motorsports Authentics, the merchandising company that is joint-owned by Speedway Motorsports Inc. (SMI) and the International Speedway Corporation (ISC) is close to bankruptcy. In addition, the company has apparently defaulted on royalty payments to drivers and race teams. In a filing with the SEC, SMI stated that Motorsports Authentics had stopped payment of royalties and was attempting to renegotiate licensing agreements.

Tuesday night the TN State Fair Board voted to shut down activity on the property at the end of next June. The Fairgrounds has been losing money and financial estimates predict it will go broke within a year. A decision hasn't been made yet what will happen to it and it's possible officials could let events continue after June. Fairgrounds Speedway operator Danny Denson says could give him time to make the track more valuable to Nashville. "I think we're all right for another season here and maybe we can prove ourselves a little better this coming year and maybe the mayor and Finance Department will look favorably on us for a long term deal," said Denson. http://www.wztv.com/newsroom/top_stories/wztv_vid_1584.shtml
The Georgia Asphalt Series finale is at the Fairgrounds Speedway Oct. 31. Craig Thompson, of the area's Ken-Ten crate racing series, says his series has rules similar to GAS. Ken-Ten teams with a ABC body will be entering.

Boyd’s Speedway will host the 2009 Tennessee Thunder DirtCar Series Finale on Saturday October 24, featuring a $5,000 to win, $350 to start, feature. The tight Thunder Series points battle between Tommy Kerr of Maryville, TN, and Billy Ogle Jr., of Knoxville, TN, will fittingly come down to the richest racing weekend of the season for the series as well as for Boyd’s Speedway. Kerr is the technical leader with a fifty-one point advantage over Ogle but by series rules, each driver’s worst finish or non-appearance is dropped from the final tally so if the points were to end now, Ogle would have a sixty-nine point advantage. Kerr and Ogle have one series win each at the northern Georgia / southern Tennessee speed plant. www.BoydsSpeedway.com www.TTDCS.com

Locust Grove's Shane Clanton held of a late surge from three-time 2009 O'Reilly All Star Series feature winner Eddie Carrier Jr. to collect $20,000 at the First Annual Dirt Track World Cup Classic at Jeff Schrader's KC Raceway in Chillicothe, OH. "I saw Eddie (Carrier Jr.) up there in turn four and I thought I need to get a little lower," Clanton said in 'Rubbin Repair' Victory Lane. "He made me get up on the wheel and push it a little harder. But he raced me clean and I hope it made a great race for the fans. "We've struggled just a little bit all year, but the last couple weeks have made up for it. My crew, these two guys here, have stuck with me and we've worked hard to get here. It's great to win this first Dirt Cup Classic here at K-C. It was a little cool for the fans, but we appreciate Jeff Schrader and the fans giving us a chance to race for this type of money deal." Clanton qualified sixth, and won his heat race. Georgian Jonathan Davenport won a B-Main, and finished eighth. Clint Smith, of Senoia, was second in the non-qualifiers race. A week earlier, Clanton won the Magnolia State 100 at Columbus (MS) Speedway.
The National Late Model Series thundered into Cochran Motor Speedway for the R. L. Gregory Memorial Race on Saturday. Ben Faircloth set the fastest time (low 15s), taking the $100.00 prize from Racers Depot Online. Tires were serious factors for this feature, as choosing to use a 55 instead of a 70 proved to be problematic for Jeremy Fitzgerald and others. Near the half-way point of this race, his tires gave up and Hunter Peacock was able to scoot under the number 7 and take the lead. Then he had to hold that lead and he did so with ease – winning in his first try with the National Late Model Series in his Mike Nasworthy owned, Bullit-Nasworthy combination. Peacock’s win in front of a huge crowd was even more special as the race was in memory of his late grandfather R. L. Gregory. Gregory had a great history as a racer and was well loved and respected among his peers. Peacock stalked the leader for several laps before taking the lead towards the end of the race. Peacock was joined by many friends and family in a post race interview on the front stretch as the near capacity crowd cheered him on. Hunter was emotional as he dedicated the win to his late grandfather and publicly thanked Fitzgerald on an amazing race. Late Model Series Director Ray Miller. They had limited entries to drivers who had run four NLMS shows. A recent rainout led to reducing that to three races, and 60 are eligible. Five of the 60 are not entering, but Miller has a "waiting list" and has made five eligible who had run two shows. This rule gives the Series regulars the shot at the biggest purse of the year. Dennis "Rambo" Franklin, a two-time winner, is not eligible. http://www.nlmss.com

This week, we've got a fresh column on a true NASCAR hero at www.georgiaracinghistory.com. Hawkinsville's Paul McDuffie was a wizard with a Chevy engine. Racing out of Atlanta, McDuffie's cars won races in NASCAR's Grand National and Convertible division with legendary drivers Fireball Roberts and Joe Lee Johnson, including the Southern 500 and the World 600. He won races and championships with his friend, Georgia Racing Hall of Fame member Roz Howard, and when Chevy decided to bring a new team into NASCAR in 1960, McDuffie was the man they tabbed to run the team. McDuffie was lost in a tragic pit road crash at Darlington later that same year. http://www.georgiaracinghistory.com
Clint Smith. a WoO traveler, replied about a report that he is switching from GRT race cars: "That is just a rumor. Right now we are focusing on the current season and have not discussed plans regarding 2010." Clint's schedule for this weekend is not on his website, but he'll likely be at the Lucas shows at TST, Dixie, and Rome, along with WoO regular Shane Clanton.
Promotion idea: In today’s world we’ve come to want everything to happen as fast as possible. We want the internet to work fast. When it’s time to eat we want the drive-thru lane to move fast. Everything we do in life just seems to be getting faster and faster. However, tonight’s flagman was as slow as molasses. What I mean by that is he took FOREVER to throw the yellow flag. Folks, this is one place where you don’t want “Fast”. The slower the flagman is in displaying the yellow flag the better. Often he waited and waited and finally the temporarily disabled driver got his car going again. Can you imagine that!! This is how you run 15 heat races in little more than an hour. (from Randy Lewis, Alberta’s #1 Trackchaser)
Promotion idea 2:There were lots of interesting signs in the pits. One promised a $25 fine to drivers who did not help pack the track. There were several others. I took pictures of most of them. You can see them at www.ranlayracing.com

Brandon Haley, of Lavonia, used his home-town, home-track advantage to battle FASTRAK 2008 Champ Royce Bray early and then hold off Shannon Buckingham, of Morristown, TN, in the late laps at FASTRAK’s GRAND NATIONAL Night 1 at Lavonia Speedway Saturday night. The very personable Haley, known as “Cornbread” since his days working with Kenny Wallace some years back, swept the weekend by setting fast time, winning his heat and then winning the 50-lap FASTRAK A-Main. ”I have so many people to thank,” said a very happy Brandon Haley from the front stretch. “My family, the crew, Horton Homes, Southland Real Estate, Real Wheels, Sunoco, K&N Air Filters, Klotz Synthetic Lubricants, Ultra Shields, and Old Man’s Garage.” Royce Bray lost his drive shaft while leading on lap 30 and was the first person to Haley’s car when he came into Victory Lane on Lavonia’s front stretch. Ronnie Johnson, of Chattanooga, TN, took the lead on lap 21, and then pulled away to win the Fall Nationals 50 Presented By NeSmithNow.com for the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series on Saturday night at Talladega Short Track. Johnson started fifth and used the outside groove to work his way to the front of the pack. The victory was the 11th series career win and third of the season for the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame Inductee driving the Miller Brothers Coal Warrior. “Just love this race track because it’s always racy, like it was tonight, and I also love the fans here,” Johnson said. “The car worked great on the outside, but I had to get to the bottom to work through lapped traffic, and it was also good down there. This was a great tune up race for the $10,000-to-win Dega 100 here in three weeks.” Best result for a GA racer was a seventh for Derrick Rainey of Powder Springs.

For 31 years race car drivers and their teams have poured into East Alabama Motor Speedway for one of the biggest races in the southeast - "The Alabama State Championships". With nine different classes running, prize money that you don't see offered often, and the history behind it makes for some great racing and a spectacular race weekend for drivers and the fans. Headlining the weekend was the 75 lap Late Model feature. On Saturday, Jonathan Davenport, of Blairsville, GA, set a new daytime qualifying track record with a lap of 13:83 seconds to lock himself on the pole. William Thomas was the only other driver to run in the 13 second bracket putting him outside front row. William Thomas dominated the race's first half, until a flat tire sent him to the pits. Davenport led the rest of the way, with Georgians taking four of the top five spots.
