Championship’s are claimed for 2009 at Lanier Racers claim titles with memory’s of James Garrison
Braselton, GA (September 12, 2009) – While the memory of a dear friend was on the hearts and minds of every racer who competed Saturday evening at Lanier National Speedway, the racing action was intense and exciting, just the way that James Garrison would have enjoyed seeing. The air was electric and excitement was at an all time high as 128 teams packed the 3/8th’s mile asphalt oval as the NSCAR Whelen All-American Series ran for the final time during the 2009 racing season for the James Garrison Memorial 100. As the Pro Late Model division had the $5,000 prize to drive for, the 11 local divisions were having the race to the championship. On hand to enjoy the evening’s events was Ninth District Congressman and Governor hopeful, Nathan Deal. As twenty four cars took the green flag for the James Garrison Memorial 100, in the Pro Late Model division, Shane Sawyer was on the pole, with Casey Roderick starting on the outside front roll. Fastest qualifier, Chase Elliott stated 4th, as he earlier in the day had to roll the die to determine where he would start his #9 Aaron’s Dream Machine, Bill Elliott Racing Ford machine. He circled the track with a time of 13.936. Paul Kelly started in the third position. Roderick rocketed from the outside front row to take the early advantage from the field, as he took the early lead, with Sawyer, Elliott, Kelley, and Whorton the top five at the completion of lap one. The caution flag would make it’s first out of five appearances of the evening, when on lap 8 Shane Nalley’s Nicholson Tire and Auto Chevrolet spun exiting turn two. Roderick lead the field back to the green, as his #19 Cork and Keg, Fredrick’s Jewelers, Bill Elliott Racing Ford was strong on the straightaway’s, but Sawyer’s #38 Quality Concrete Toyota had the advantage in the turns. Sawyer would use that to his advantage, as on lap 16, Sawyer was able to get to the inside of Roderick and make the clean pass entering turn one, and claiming the lead. On lap 20 Dalton Grindle’s machine spun on the back straightaway, as the caution appeared for the second time. Grindle was unable to continue the race, due to a broken rear end gear, shorting the evening for the Jim Waters Motor Company, Gainesville Motor Sports Chevrolet team. Coming back to the green, with the field taking the green double file, Roderick took the advantage on the outside line over Sawyer on the inside, as he would lead the next sixteen laps. Lap 36 saw Shane Nalley spin his Chevrolet machine in turn two, bunching up the field, and giving Sawyer and Roderick another chance to see who the strongest car. As the green flag waved, the Toyota of Sawyer out powered Roderick’s Ford, and lead the remaining 64 laps, claiming the checkered flag, trophy, and the $5,000 top prize. Roderick, Elliott, Kelley, and Jeff Choquette rounded out the top five. “That was a good clean race all night. I don’t know if he (Roderick) was loose, but I had the opportunity to pass him. No harm no foul, it was just a great race.” When asked what he will do with the extra money, he stated “I’ll put the money back into the race car, to get it ready for next year,” said Sawyer in Victory Lane. In the Super Truck division, points leader Paul Antley, has had a season that most racers could only dream of having. Entering his 14th race of the 2009 season, he has recorded 11 wins and 13 top 10’s. Antley started the event on the pole position after he circled the 3/8th’s mile asphalt oval with a qualifying lap of 15.245 seconds. Team owner and friend Curt Britt strapped in for his third event of the year and started on the outside front row. When the green flagged waved, Antley took the advantage over the nine field of trucks and didn’t look back to claim the checkered flag and the 2009 Super Truck Championship. “Wow! What a season!!! First off I would like to thank God for blessing me and my whole team this season. Thanks to our whole team over at Curt Britt Motorsports, Curt, Lindsey, Bobby, Diana, Kevin, and Danny. I could not have accomplished this without their help. Also I could not have accomplished this without the help of my sponsors, Napa Auto Parts, Garrison Racing Equipment, Robert Mascaro & Associates, Pro Shocks, and VDL Fuel Systems. I’d like to say a special ‘Thank you’ to James Garrison, he gave me my first racing account when I needed parts and didn’t have money to pay for it.” Jason Bates entered the Open Wheeled Modified Division with his championship already wrapped up, and was racing for his 13th win of the year. Jimmy Motes and Brian Cantrell started on the front row for the 20 lap feature race, with the car of Motes taking the early lead. Entering turn three on lap six, Motes’ machine broke loose, and spun, while the machines of Alex Roberts, and Bates spun to avoid him. Motes would fight back to finish second while Randy Haney would capture the win, his third of the season. Mike Davidson made a return to Lanier after a four week absence to capture his 10th win of the year in the Iceman feature. Davidson captured the championship as well, as holding off Hoyt Stephens, David Murphy, Chris Holbrook, and Sammy Short to round out the top five for the 20 lap feature. Mark Caudell started on the pole position in the Sportsman feature, and never looked back to take the checkered, as he won the caution free 20 lap event. 2009 Sportsman driver Jeff Chadwick finished second, with Pro Late Model driver Russell Fleeman strapping in the #20, finishing in third position, with Bryan Jones, and Jackie Daniels rounding out the top five. James Nash lead flag to flag to capture his third win of the season winning the Mini-Stock feature. Rounding out the top five for the event was Spanky Hicks, Allen Cantrell, Aaron Calvert, and Trace Embry. Steve Hill came home with a sixth place finish, and the 2009 champion for the Mini-stock division. In the Pro Challenge division, Kyle Benjamin led the nine car field to the green, while Jacob Wallace started on the outside front row for the 25 lap feature. Benjamin, from Easley, SC, dominated the event and collected his eighth victory of the year, while Brady Boswell came home in second place, but left with the big trophy as he claimed the Southern Division Pro Challenge Championship. As the month of October approaches, the field for the INEX Legends keeps expanding, as teams from across the nation make the voyage to Braselton, GA, in preparation for the 18th Annual Raceiver Legends Nationals on October 8th, 9th, and 10th. The format for the Nationals is broken down into four divisions, Young Lions, Semi-Pro, Masters and Pro divisions. With the format in mind, and an excess of legends competitors Lanier National Speedway officials decided to branch out and run the Young Lions division as a separate division, instead of mixed in with the semi-pro division. The Young Lions division is made up of racers aged 12 to 14 years of age. When the field of 17 young lion’s legends took to the track for their 20 lap feature took to the track, it wasn’t long before a familiar fan favorite would take the spotlight. Tyler Lester and Harrison Rhodes lead the field to the green, with Rhodes making the outside line stick and leading the field to the completion of lap one. On lap four, a familiar blue and white #9 made it’s appearance on the bumper of Rhodes, as Chase Elliott behind the wheel of the #9, made the clean pass around Rhodes and captured the top spot. On lap 13, the Tyler Lester machine appeared to get loose in turn three and turned sideways. When he slowed to regain control of his car, the swarm of vehicles around him attempted to clear his machine. In the mayley, seven machines were involved in the incident, which blocked the track, and the red flag appeared. Thankfully everyone climbed from their cars, without any injuries. When the cleanup crews left the track, the green flew, and it was Chase Elliott taking the win in the Young Lions division, his second appearance at Lanier in a Legends machine. Another competitor doing the double, running in the Pro Late Model race, and getting ready for the Legends Nationals is Casey Roderick. Roderick took the lead on lap two in the Legends Pro and Master combined division race to record his second legends win of the season. Currie Pierce finished ninth overall to capture the Pro championship title, while Jeff Haynie won the Masters division race, and Phillip Young finished 10th overall to capture the Masters Championship. In the Legends Semi-Pro division, Cody Haskins started on the pole and never looked back as he captured the checkered in the nine car, twenty lap feature. Kyle Plott captured the 2009 Championship. In the INEX Bandolero division, Dalton Robertson took home the overall win, along with the Young Gun division win, also the title of 2009 Bando Young Gun division Champion. In the Bandits division, Rusty Sutton collected the win, while Kason Plott finished 11th overall, but collected the Championship for his division. Garrett Smithley collected the Outlaw win, and championship, by being the only Outlaw driver to compete at Lanier all year. In the Street Stock division, the 10 car field took to the 15 lap feature with Mike Childers taking the point on lap four, passing Robert Cantrell for the lead. Mike held on for the remaining eleven laps to hold on to capture his ninth win of the year, along with the championship. With three weeks until the INEX Legends Asphalt Nationals, Lanier National Speedway will be swinging open it’s gates every Saturday night to host Bandolero, Legends, Thunder Roadster, Pro Challenge, and Spectator racing, with Donnie’s Stimulus package. Admission is only $5 for the grandstands, and trackside parking is $20 per car, with the people inside the car admitted free!
