Last time that the Georgia Asphalt Series (GAS) make their voyage to Lanier National Speedway, many teams needed a tugboat to help them pull out of the soggy 3/8th’s mile asphalt oval, when Mother Nature invaded the speedway on lap 88 of 100. One local favorite was at the right place at the right time, giving Casey Roderick, his first GAS Series win of his career. Roderick, along with his #19 Bill Elliott Racing Development Ford team will look to defend his victory on Saturday, August 15, for the running of the Georgia Lions Camp for the Blind 100. Another important step for Roderick and his team, heading in to Lanier is the GAS points. The points see him leading for the first time in his career, having a slim 20 point margin over second place, as well as standout team mate, 14 year old Chase Elliott piloting car #9. Top runner #41 TJ Reaid is third in points 53 markers behind first place. Last week’s Pro Late winner, Shane Sawyer in his #38 is fourth in points with #10 Greg Simpon in the fifth position. For the GAS series will be stop number eight of the twelve stop tour, with 44 drivers making attempts to race in the Georgia Asphalt Series tour in 2009.
Looking to make his first run in the 2009 Georgia Asphalt Series this weekend at Lanier, will be two names very well known in the south eastern short track racing; Ronnie Sanders and Bubba Pollard. As many of you know, Sanders hung up his helmet in 2008, but beginning this year, tapped up and coming up superstar Pollard from Senoia, GA.
Besides the Southeastern heroes of the GAS tour, the local heroes will also tackle Georgia’s NASCAR home track including, Super Trucks in which #45 Paul Antley and #12 Kristen Wallace will both look to defend their win’s from last weekend’s local division race. Looking at the big NASCAR points title run, Antley leads by a slim 54 points from second place Bill Hoose, driving truck #45. Racing action in the Open Wheel Modified, Sportsman, Street Stock, Mini-Stock, and the Pro Challenge divisions will also be on tap. One of the fiercest divisions racing on Saturday evening will be the action in the INEX Legends and Bandolero divisions, as they prepare for the biggest weekends of many of these young and older races alike, on October 7-9 for the 19th Annual Raceceiver Legends Nationals and Thunder Car Nationals which will be held at Lanier National Speedway. Concluding the evening will be when you the fans get to try out your driving skills with the highly talked about spectator racing, and spectator qualifying.
Pit gates will swing open at 1 pm on Saturday, August 15, with practice for the GAS Series beginning at 3:00. Local division practice will start shortly after the conclusion of the GAS Series. Trackside parking will begin at 5, with the Georgia’s NASCAR Home Track offering the best view of any race track, offering the multi-terrace parking, to guarantee there isn’t a bad parking place. Grandstand gates will swing open at 6 pm, with features taking the green flag at 8 pm.
With the children starting school this week in many counties, track owner Donnie Clack announced today that children 11 years of age and under will receive free admission with the purchase of an adult ticket.
