Atlanta Motor Speedway’s Thursday Thunder Week Four Results
HAMPTON, Ga. (June 25, 2009) – Atlanta Motor Speedway’s week four of Thursday Thunder was full of many heated battles on track. In addition to the competitive racing, the intermission race featured NASCAR’s next young hopefuls competing in the always-popular Kids’ Bike Trike and Power Wheels Races.
The Young Lions feature began with Justin Thomas as the pole-sitter. By lap one, Mason Massey wrangled his way to the top spot. On lap nine, Chad Finchum dove underneath Massey in turn three to become the race leader. Finchum celebrated his fourth Thursday Thunder career win in Victory Lane 11 laps later.
Ed Clark paced the field to the start for the Roadsters feature. On lap five, Jeff Haynie (substitute driving for Brian Weimer) stuck his nose to the inside of Clark entering turn three, spinning the leader around to bring out the caution. Jeremy Kalina (substitute driving for Brian Meredith) inherited the race lead. Kalina led the remaining circuits to post the win for Meredith. Following post-race inspection, Kalina was disqualified, handing over the race win to Skip Nichols.
Chris Rhodes was on the pole for the combined Young Guns and J.J. Morley Outlaws feature. On the first lap, Evan Bell made his move to the inside of the race leader in turn four to take over the top spot. Fourteen laps later, Bell tangled with Matt Linker while navigating lapped traffic. Both cars were sent to the rear, placing Joey Padgett as the race leader. Bell fought his way through the field and was able to reclaim the top spot two laps later. Bell logged his fourth Thursday Thunder career win.
The Pro division feature began with Will Prance holding the advantage. On lap five, Prance and Zach Kittle made contact on the backstretch, which turned the lead over to Bubba Harry. On the final lap, Zach Kittle tried to pass two cars going into the corner, but drove in too hot and slammed into leader Harry, spinning him out. Austin Hill came out smelling like a rose, stealing the win, his eighth in his Thursday Thunder career.
Mike Abercrombie paced the field to the green for the Masters feature. By lap one, Johnny Henderson was on the point. Haynie was hot on Henderson’s heels and by lap eight, made the pass for the lead. Haynie led the remainder of the race capture his 12th Thursday Thunder career win.
The Semi-Pro feature had Chris Bowie on the point for the start. Jonathan Chandler made his move to the front quickly. Chandler never was challenged for the win and went on to post his ninth career Thursday Thunder win.
The M&S Auto Bandits feature began with Logan Sargeant on the point. John Holleman rocketed to the front by the time the first circuit was completed. Kyle Weatherman leaned on Holleman lap after lap, making his move on lap 11, to become the leader. Weatherman posted his second win of the season at AMS.
The Legends Promoter’s Choice feature began with John Ponzio on the pole. Ponzio swung wide exiting turn four on lap two, allowing A.J. Carlisi to steal the top spot. Carlisi was the eventual victor.
Wyatt Simic was out front for the Bandolero Promoter’s Choice feature, but by lap two, Taylor Jorgensen was the leader. Jorgensen went on to win the race.
Atlanta Motor Speedway’s Thursday Thunder will return on July 2 for the fifth of 10 weeks of Legends, Bandolero and Thunder Roadster racing. Week five will include the biggest and best fireworks show on Atlanta’s south side to celebrate America’s independence. Fireworks will also be displayed at Friday Night Drags the following evening.
