Bill Elliott, Georgia's brightest NASCAR racing star in recent years, holds the official qualifying record at Talladega at 212.229 set May 1, 1986. He's going back to Talladega Wednesday (May 13) to try for a new closed course speed record. He'll be driving the same E-85 Ford Mustang that Dave Despain of Speed TV called "Arguably the fastest Mustang on the planet" after it went over 252 mph at Bonneville driven by Danny Thompson last August. The E-85 Ford Mustang has been reconfigured to NASCAR specs, and will be fueled with Rocket Brand racing fuel, which is 85% corn alcohol. Hajek Motorsports Museum, in Ames, OK, has one of the most impressive collections of vintage record breaking race cars in the country, and is one of the sponsors for this record attempt. One of the cars in this collection is Bill Elliott's 87 Ford Thunderbird that is still today the fastest stockcar. This classic race car will be on display at the Talladega Super Speedway during the event. Hajek Motorsports has reserved the entire Speedway for this event. This is a special invitation to our partners, sponsors and media to attend. http://hajekmotorsports.com/

Southern All Stars spokesman "Flagone" has posted the Hartwell forum on www.trackforums.com "I have always chose to keep business private. That is why I did not address who cancelled our events (at Hartwell) ,,, Car counts had nothing to do with the reason I was given however. It was business related. "But let me say since you brought it up. Car counts are not what makes money for race tracks. Providing them with a quality, well run event that is run in a timely manner and provides entertainment IS. I can assure you that though we only had 22 cars at Lavonia and Toccoa respectively that the promoter made money on each show. We put butts in seats and THAT is where anyone looking to make money on a racing show should be looking to judge from. "I will not make excuses for car counts anywhere. For the last 27 years Southern All Stars has been successful using the same formula. A core group of drivers mixed with the regional group in the area of the track plus the track regulars. I have about 7 guys who are running our series for points. That is no secret. I tell promoters that up front when we talk about a race. The thing is you need to talk to those promoters that had those 22 car counts and ask them if they made money and how their show was ran. "I am not downing anyone. As I said I chose not to answer because it was a business matter. So to answer the question, the track decided to cancel their events. I was given a reason that was a matter of the track's personal business and I left it at that. If the real reason was car counts, they made a $$ error. "BTW here are my car counts after 9 events: GIS #1 - 59 GIS #2 - 58 GIS #3 - 52 North Georgia - 40 Lavonia - 22 North Georgia - 38 Cleveland - 42 Toccoa - 22 Talladega - 49 "Without exception every promoter has said they have made money. EVERY ONE. "That is an average of 42 cars per event. Getting 30 cars in todays market is good. "And BTW in regards to TST. We will be there in July when there is no Cup race going on and I can assure you we will have another very strong car count there." www.southern-allstars.com

From http://beauslocumb.blogspot.com/ Monday, May 4, 2009 Four down...Two to go! So Beau (Slocumb) finished his fourth round of chemo Saturday night...and got to go home (to Sam's house) Sunday! Mom said he did unbeliveably well this round. He never actually got sick! He felt pretty nauseous a couple of times but they stayed on top of the nausea medication and were able to fight it off. One of Beau's nurses told mom that he had seen a few patients that were able to adjust to the chemo and actually did better towards the end of their treatments so hopefully, Beau will be one of those kinds of patients. With the number of people that have been praying for him and the positive attitude he has had, that wouldn't surprise me at all at this point! I've been thinking alot about this since Beau was diagnosed and in Sunday School yesterday, Mr. Washburn reminded me of it again...we have soooo much to be thankful for in this situation. It may not seem like it to someone on the outside looking in, but we really do. Things could have been so much worse than they are... Beau's cancer was only found in his lung. I now know far more about synovial sarcoma than I ever would have imagined and according to my (and Dr. Brown's) research, it RARELY ever shows up in the lung first. In fact, from what we could find, Beau is only the 24th case in the world where it originated in the lung. Usually, synovial sarcoma originates in an extremity and metastasizes to the lung. If that had been the case, Beau's prognosis would have been MUCH worse http://beauslocumb.blogspot.com/

NASCAR REPORT: The U.S. Army will pay Stewart-Haas Racing $11.6 million to sponsor Ryan Newman's #39 car for 23 races this season, and the Army official who oversees it says the money is worth it. Army and National Guard (#88-Dale Earnhardt Jr.) were the only branches of the military that served as primary sponsors for cars in Saturday's NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Richmond International Raceway. Lt. Gen. Benjamim Freakley said the Army looks at different ways to determine if the sponsorship is worthwhile but admits it comes down to one thing. "At the end of the day, for the Army, it's does someone join the Army or not," Freakley said. He said 41 people agreed Saturday at the Army's booth at the track to be interviewed by an Army recruiter. "That's powerful," Freakley said. (Hampton Roads)(5-3-2009)
The AP's Jenna Fryer is reporting Speedway Motorsports, Inc., run by motorsports magnate Bruton Smith, has put in an official request to NASCAR for Kentucky Speedway to be added to the 2010 Sprint Cup schedule. However, SMI's latest proposal has come with a twist: for the first time, they've admitted they're willing to move a date from another SMI track in order to make room for the 1.5-mile oval on the 36-race docket. The two SMI tracks in serious jeopardy of losing a date are Atlanta and New Hampshire. Atlanta has struggled to sell out its Spring date in recent years, while New Hampshire has often struggled to produce exciting side-by-side action since the 1-mile oval was added to the Sprint Cup schedule in 1993. www.Frontstretch.com
Ratings for the NASCAR on FOX broadcast Saturday night dipped by double digits once again. The Richmond race scored just a 3.7/7 share for the evening, 12 percent lower than last year's 4.2/8 for the same event. Overall viewership remains down 15 percent this season for Sprint Cup races. Further confirming America's short attention span, ratings for the Kentucky Derby, which lasts two minutes, were up by double digits.

Nice post on 4m.net about 411 Speedway in Dublin: "The crowds are still coming every week. Packed house again Sat night. Fans had to sit and wait out rain for about 1 1/2 hrs but a good many stayed to see the Features that got started around 11pm. We had a total of 43 cars Sat night, that was down from 68 previous week. Had a lot of owners say they are in the process of building a car to race. Overall, for a track to only be back open for three weeks after over 10 years of being idle, things are looking very good for 441 speedway. http://www.4m.net

Trackchaser Randy Lewis reports from Monadnock (NH) Speedway: "Rural Eastern race fans are a boisterous lot. Eastern race fans appear to be an older group, but with a good deal of families sprinkled in as well. No one would confuse the demographics of a west coast stadium off-road crowd with these people ... A good deal of fans would have a difficult time passing the President’s Council on Physical Fitness mid-term exam, but then that is true is most locations of the United States ... I would consider the Monadnock Speedway a “top 40” track within the U.S." Pictures from his Iceland trip, too, at www.ranlayracing.com

Last week emails were flying about a last chance to see and walk around the long-closed Lakewood Speedway on Atlanta's south side. "This is the last time to see the remains of the track. It will be gone forever on Monday. They are going to put cheap housing on the land." The last email on the subject kinda reflected one of the reasons for the demise of Lakewood: "and bring your gun." Times change: One reason cited for the closing was the "modern" trend towards asphalt racing.
Former AJC NASCAR writer Rick Minter often shared accomodations on the road with David Poole, of the Charlotte Observer, and wrote a loving piece upon the death last week: "Late into many a night, he was sitting at the kitchen table in front of his laptop, writing stories or compiling stats to back up what he wrote. He usually was the last to turn in at night and the first up in the morning, as most highly successful people are." www.racintoday.com/archives/2870 "In his final column, David Poole called for changes to the race track at Talladega Superspeedway to prevent a disaster from happening in light of the Carl Edwards crash at the end of Sunday’s Aaron’s 499. "Poole pointed out that changes to the cars, restrictor plates, yellow line rules and other measures haven’t fixed the problems that come with racing on a track designed to be as fast as possible. He said racing at Talladega is out of control and suggested changing the banking in the turns or the shape or size of the race track." http://www.racintoday.com/archives/2916
