The Southern All Star Racing Series will hit the high banks of Talladega Short Track Saturday night for the first time this year. The track, affectionately known as “The Hornets Nest”, always provides plenty of side by side racing action for the Talladega faithful. This weekend, while the NASCAR gang is across the street at the big track, TST looks to host another big crowd. Last year, Wendell Wallace made a last lap pass on Tony Knowles to take the $5000 payday. TST will host a full show on Friday night as well. www.talladegashorttrack.com
Benji Cole, of Cannon, GA, over took Chris Ferguson on lap 14 and then held off the charges of Ferguson, Skip Arp, and Ronny Lee Hollingsworth, to take the $5,000 payday at last Saturday's Southern All Stars race at Toccoa. Cole thrashed to repair his Dirty White Boy race car after suffering rear suspension damage in time trials. Ferguson electrified the crowd in time trials when he bested the six year old track record of Casey Roberts. Fergusons lap of 11.746 bested Roberts former mark by more than two tenths of a second. No other driver was able to reach the sub twelve second range. Ronny Lee Hollingsworth was second quick with a 12.028. One of the biggest cheers of the night was the announcement that local favorite Chris Madden had won the WoO race in Virginia. After three crashing tries at double file restarts on lap 14, series director Kelley Cartlon made it single file for the rest of the race. The ASA Southeast Asphalt Tour visits Dillon (SC) Motor Speedway 4/10-mile oval Saturday for the RC Cola/MoonPie 100. "We've already had a very competitive year for our series, with four winners in four races," said ASA Southeast Asphalt Tour Operations Manager Micky Cain. "While all four of the guys who have already won this year could win again at Dillon, we could also see our fifth different winner, which shows how strong the series is this year and how many competitive cars we've got coming to each race. I wouldn't be surprised if we made it five-for-five this weekend at all." One of the favorites for victory has to be current series points leader Jason Hogan. Hogan has two top-five finishes in the series first three points paying events and won three times in just seven starts last season. Hogan leads Jeff Choquette by just 13 points heading into the fifth race of the season. Taylor Satterfield, who finished third at Dillon last year, sits just 21 points behind the top-two drivers. Young Chase Elliott and his Aaron's Dream Machine are entering, after a great weekend. He was third last Friday in the Anderson GAS show, and second Sat. at Montgomery in the Southern Pro LM Series show. “We had another good week in the Aaron’s Dream Machine,” Elliott said as he reflected on the strong showing. “We ran two races and had two top five finishes. The car stayed consistent in both races and that’s what made us finish so strong. I can’t thank Ricky (Turner), Jim (Barfield) and my Dad and Mom enough for giving me the equipment and opportunity and Aaron’s for giving me the support to go out and run strong every weekend.” www.asasoutheastasphalttour.com
Veteran race promoter B. J. Parker returns to Montgomery (AL) Motor Speedway Saturday night, with his new Southern Superstars Short Track Series. Also on hand will be long time racer Dennie Rewis and his wife, Lois, honored for their 40 years of support for the half mile track. “I wanted to pay honor to the Rewis’s with this first race with the new series” said Parker. “Since Dennie has retired from racing and his wife still works at the track, I wanted the Montgomery racing family to show them their support and just how much they mean to them.” The Southern Superstars have run two races this year and the competition has been spectacular. In the first race on March 29th, John Henegar Jr. from Scottsboro, AL, picked up the first win, but not without controversy. With less than 10 laps to go, Henegar bumped Hueytown, AL, driver John Wilkinson while leading, spinning him out and bringing out the caution. Henegar took the point and led the remaining laps for the win. One week later, Wilkinson would once again find himself leading the race with less than 10 laps to go at The Sayre Speedway. A hard charging Gary Sanford Jr., from Maytown, AL, would bump Wilkinson and the caution flew as Wilkinson spun once again. Both drivers were sent to the rear and Madison, AL, driver Jeff Letson picked up the win. Qualifying will start at 5:00 and the first race will roll off at 6:00. Joining the Southern Superstars will be the Street Stocks, Mini Modified and Renegades

Casey Roderick led the first five laps of the race before he was passed by Porter. Porter held the lead until lap ninety when he was passed by Ralph Carnes, of Anderson, SC. After three years of silence, Montgomery Motor Speedway came back to life with the Southern Pro Late Model Series 100 lap race on the half mile oval. Russell Fleeman, of Dacula, set fast time in qualifying and started on the point after drawing a one out of the bag. Fleeman held off early challenges for the lead from Scotty Ellis, of Juliette. Intense battles developed up front of the field between Fleeman, Ellis, Dennis Reno Jr of Dora, AL, Chase Elliott, of Dawsonville, and Chris Serio of Hoover, AL. As the 100 lapper progressed, Fleeman and Elliott became the cars to beat. The two drivers began to pull away from the rest of the field with Elliott making some serious challenges for the lead in the late going. "I knew Russell was beginning to fade so I was just trying to stay with him in case I could find an opportunity to get around him," said Elliott, 13 year old son of NASCAR great Bill Elliott. Fleeman was able to hang on to the lead despite a right front tire on his car going flat. "Man, Chase (Elliott) is going to be a great driver", said Fleeman. "He's a young kid filling a man's shoes." www.splmseries.com. The first weekly show at Lanier is Sat., and it includes the pro late models and all the local classes. GM Terry Roberts has announced that pit passes have been reduced to $25, $15 for six and under. Andy Seuss meticulously made his way forward from his seventh place starting spot to take the win at Lanier's Southern Modified Div. race. The win was the young driver’s second of the season. “I’m absolutely pumped, this car was unreal,” said an elated Seuss. I am just happy, this crew worked so hard and we worked harder than anyone else in practice, we ran over 100 laps in practice. We changed everything over and back up until the last minute and I think that is what it’s going to take this year with the competition level where it’s at. I just can’t think everyone enough; they make it possible for me to come down from New Hampshire to all of these races. I am just living the dream right now.” Seuss had to overcome two major obstacles to get the win. First, he had to take the lead from the driver who has won the other two Southern Mod Tour races, Ted Christopher. “He (TC) knew I was faster and he pretty much let me by, but it was sweet to pass him after finishing second to him last week,” admitted Seuss. L.W. Miller came around in third and Burt Myers, who was second in the points, took fourth. Myers dropped to third with 619 points. Brian Loftin finished fifth. Lanier also held its weekly racing series events: Aaron Calvert was cruising in the Mini Stock race and held off Steve Hill and Sparky Hicks to the line for his first victory of the season in the 20-lap event. Curt Britt led from start-to-finish to get the victory in the 20-lap supertruck event. R.S. Senter chased Britt the entire way but could not catch him. Mark Wilbanks was third, James Davidson was fourth, and Brian Huff fifth. Mike Davidson grabbed the lead on the start and never trailed in taking the win in the 20-lap Sportsman race. Chris Holbrook chased Davidson the entire way in second place but could not catch him. Jeff Chadwick finished third and Jon Martin was fourth. Randy Haney and Jason Bates battled for the lead on the start of the 20-lap open-wheeled modified race with both drivers sliding heading out of Turn 4. But Haney was able to regain control the quickest and then led the entire way in taking the win. Bates finished second and Alex Roberts a distant third. Dylan Ames passed Zac Kittle on Lap 2 and won the 20-lap Legends Pro Masters race. Steven Ross was able to get by Kittle on Lap 16 to take second and Kittle finished third. Bubba Henry was fourth and Currie Pierce fifth. Clay Hair won the Masters division and was ninth overall. Dale Dodge was able to avoid a final-lap crash between leaders Evan Swilling and Davey Matthews, who were eventually disqualified for rough driving on the final lap, and take an improbable win. Kyle Plott finished second, Tyler Lester was third, Dillon Bassett fourth, and Dalton Grindle was fifth. Kason Plott held off Cody Garland to win the 20-lap Bandeleros race. Plott was the top Young Guns driver while Garland was the Bandits winner. Nick Hazelwood was third. Often times during a dramatic night at a short track you hear someone say “there’s just something in the air.” At Lanier National Speedway what is in the air can occasionally provide an unpleasant face to go along the racing excitement. When the wind blows, the wonderous odor from a nearby chicken farm flows across the Lanier Landscape. Light-hearted, track owner Donnie Clack joked on the PA System with the crowd about the smell. “Ya’ll smell that perfume factory over there?" asked Clack. "Raise your hands if you like Zaxby’s or Chick-Fil-A. That’s what it smells like before they cook it. Next time you get a chicken biscuit you’ll know where it came from. That’s the chicken farm over the hill there.” http://www.speed51.com

William Thomas started on the pole of the 40-lap Top Tracks Challenge Series event at Cleveland Speedway Saturday, got the jump on fellow front row starter Ray Cook to lead the first lap, and led the next 39 circuits to take the win. While the front trio of Thomas, Cook and Rick Hixson toured the tricky third mile clay oval, the remainder of the field were waging their own battles for position. On the white flag lap, Brian Pritchard, who had been hounding Hixson for most of the feature, was able to make the pass on Hixson to take third. Hixson settled for fourth with Chip Brindle fifth. Brad Hall, Billy Mayo, John Ownbey, Jeff Smith, and Blake Stewart rounded out the top 10. In the Late Model feature, Jamie Perry would take the lead from pole sitter Ray Cook and lead the first lap. On lap 17 Billy Mayo would take second from Cook and pressured Perry for the remaining laps. Cook was third with Derrick Ellis fourth and Kevin Gibson fifth. Rounding out the top 10 were Shorty Frazier, Tanner Works, John Jones, David Payne and Brad Coffey. Cleveland Speedway's 2009 Championship points start this Saturday. The familiar red #18 pulled into Victory Lane after Saturday night’s Pro Late Model Viper Series Sidewinder 100 at South Alabama Speedway. But Ronnie Sanders wasn’t behind the wheel this time. Bubba Pollard, of Senoia, who has been the hottest driver in the South in 2009, steered the car to its familiar grounds. Pollard has been tearing up the short tracks around the South. Pollard won the Pro Late Model Rattler 125, finished second in the Rattler Super Late Models, won the CRA South’s inaugural event at Cordele, finished second at Five Flags Speedway, and won at Mobile. He’s leading four different series, including South Alabama’s Viper Series. Pollard and Sanders teamed up shortly after the Rattler Weekend, and the team has hit on all cylinders. Pollard set fast time in qualifying and led all 100 laps to take his latest win. http://www.speed51.com
JOHNNY TRIBBLE GETS FIRST WIN OF ‘09 AND STEVIE JONES THREEPEATS AT COCHRAN By: Rev. Todd Shearin Stevie Jones was in a different car but ended up in the same place - victory lane - Saturday night at CMS. Jones who has won every late model points race so far this year did it again in convincing fashion. After driving his own car for his first two wins, Jones took the Turk racing entry to victory lane to make it three in a row. Ronnie and Rex Turk, along with parents Walter and Anne, brought a brand new car to the track and scored the win in the first race they entered this year. Phil Pittman set fast tim, but when the green fell Jones bolted to the front and that was as close as anyone would get. Legendary driver Johnny Tribble scored the popular win in the sportsman feature. Drama surrounded the pure stock feature when would-be winner Kyle Conyer did not pass post race inspections, and Robert Ethride was declared the winner. The cadet feature saw veterans Regie Jones and Mitch Fulford start on the front row. This was an incredible race from start to finish. Jones led the entire race but was hounded by Fulford the whole way. Darryl Dunn came from the eighth starting spot to finish a strong third. Once again TJ Woodard paced the road warrior feature by leading every lap. Wil Herrington was second and Wesley Brown was third. On a much sadder note our thoughts and prayers go out to Mike Seabolt who lost his brother suddenly this past week.We also are heartbroken at the loss of 3 year old Colby James Smith whose family is close friends with promoter Buddy Churchwell. DOUG TURNBULL'S WHAT'S HOT: Saturday’s race length – 312 miles. That number may turn your stomach, but that is the actual length of the races in Phoenix. Of course, the race had “500” in its title and ran at a slower speed, but its overall distance (500 kilometers, not miles) seemed perfect for several reasons. First off, the race started at 9:00 PM on a Saturday night on the East Coast, meaning that it would have ended well after midnight had there been more laps. Secondly, the shorter length means that there is less time available for drivers to simply ride around and save their equipment — they have to race! That is what NASCAR is supposed to be about! The idea of shorter distances has been tossed around by many drivers as a great way to make the racing better; however, the idea of shortening races is not popular amongst track owners and many others on the flip side of the cash register in this sport. But with fuel at a premium, the economy sagging, and interest in the sport decreasing, maybe a good change like this one is exactly what we need. (Listen to Doug this Saturday from 2 – 4 p.m. on The Allan Vigil Ford Lincoln Mercury 120 with Captain Herb Emory on News/Talk 750 WSB in Atlanta and online at wsbradio.com. You can also hear Doug as a pit road reporter on the Georgia Asphalt Series Radio Network at lanierspeedway.com/gas.html. The next race for the series is Saturday night, May 2nd.) http://www.frontstretch.com/dturnbull/23785/
Talladega Memories: In the Spring of 1985, Bill Elliott won the pole at Talladega at a then-record speed of 209.398 miles an hour. But after leading 25 of the first 36 laps, his seemingly dominant car got sidetracked by an oil leak that forced an unscheduled pit stop for the No. 9 Ford. When Elliott came back out on track, he was just about to be lapped a second time by the leaders -- leaving a distance of nearly 5.33 miles to make up to get to the front. Amazingly, his Ford had so much horsepower under the hood (remember, these were the days BEFORE restrictor plates) Elliott made up the entire distance in the matter of 100 laps without the benefit of a single caution. Leading 35 of the final 44 circuits, he breezed to victory for his first win at the superspeedway. (the Frontstretch Newsletter)

After numerous victories and championships in Quarter Midgets, Bandoleros, Legends Cars and, more recently, Late Models in the Southeast, 16-year-old Smyrna native Kyle Fowler is set to take the next step in his young racing career. Fowler will make his debut in the NASCAR Camping World Series East on Saturday at Tri-County (NC) Motor Speedway in the #52 Chevrolet prepared by Ken Schrader Racing. “I just can’t believe the way things fell into place for this deal,” said Fowler. “Mr. Schrader runs Hendrick equipment, so it can’t get any better than that. He definitely has a lot of experience, but unfortunately he’s not going to be able to be there this weekend, but he told me I could give him a call if I need anything. It’s going to be great being able to rely on the advice of a veteran like Mr. Schrader. They have a bunch of knowledgable people in the shop like Mike Fritts, the Crew Chief, who are going to help us out this weekend. We’ve got a lot of good people in place, and I think it’s going to be a good deal.” “I’ve never been to Tri-County before, but this is going to be the first time the Camping World East goes there too, so I think we’ll be on a level playing field with everybody. A bunch of guys at the shop have raced at Tri-County in Late Models and things like that before, so that will be a big help. I’ve been told it’s like , which is one of my favorite tracks. Hopefully that will play into my strong suit.” The event will be taped for broadcast on SPEED on Thursday, May 7th, at 3pm. www.kylefowler.com

Each year, a current driver and an inactive driver are inducted by fan vote. Last year, Georgia race fans came through in the voting to help get Rex White inducted. This year, we have the opportunity to help hall of famer Jack Smith to make the cut. Go to http://www.talladegawalk.com/ , read the rules, and place your vote for Jack! Jack was a 21-time winner on what is now the NASCAR Sprint Cup circuit, and competed in the first Strictly Stock event held by NASCAR in Charlotte in 1949. Jack finished in the top five in 36% of the races he entered, and in the top 10 in 56%. Among his Cup victories were wins at Daytona in the July 4 event, a win at Daytona in a qualifier in 1960 (when they counted for points and as a win), Martinsville, North Wilkesboro, Greenville-Pickens, and Bristol. Jack was voted NASCAR's most popular driver in 1959, and, along with being an inductee in the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame in 2003, is a member of the Daytona Beach Hall of Fame and the National Motorsports Press Hall of Fame at Darlington. From the 411 staff: Dublin's 411 Speedway re-opened Saturday with a HUGE crowd. If there was any question about how it would be received by the fans that has been answered. We ran out of parking and seats before 8:00. The racing was great. Close racing in all classes. We were done around 10:30. Jeremy Faircloth passed Jeff Fortner about midway through to win the Late Model feature, which paid $1000 to win. Brad Comer finished third. Jason Floyd spun while leading early, came from the rear in just a few laps to take the lead and won the Super Street feature and $600. Allen Wilkerson broke in his heat, started 11th in the feature, and rolled to the Pure Stock win and $400. Jordan Dykes led the first 12 laps of the Road Warrior feature but had a flat with 3 to go, giving the lead to Sam Ussery he led until the white flag lap when Keith Hall got by to take the win and $250. The track was in really good shape. Turn one is still a little bit of an issue, but the track prep crew is working on it and they are going to get it right. The first hot lap session was scheduled to start at 6 the rolled onto the track at 6:02. The first heat was scheduled to start at 8, they rolled out at 7:57. Everybody I talked to left happy, and said they would be back. Swainsboro is closed next week so we expect an even bigger turnout. Overall 44 cars in 4 divisions. I honestly thought there would be more - we had 42 at practice on Thursday, but not bad I guess. We had 12 in each class, except only 8 Late models. We WILL be running Mini Stocks at 441 Speedway next week, paying $300 to win, as well as the last week of each month when Swainsboro is off. http://www.441speedway.com Payton Towns has a nice article about the new owners and the track: http://news.mywebpal.com/news_tool_v2.cfm?pnpid=909&show=archivedetails&ArchiveID=1413635&om=1

With Civil War reenactors dressed in Union and Confederate uniforms on hand to salute the evening's star driver in a special Victory Lane themed to the historic area surrounding the track, Gaffney, S.C.'s Chris Madden pleased the Southern soldiers by dominating the 50-lap World of Outlaws Late Model Series ‘Rumble on the River V' event. Madden, 33, ran away with the A-Main after outdueling Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., to assume command for good on lap 12. He earned $10,100. The post-race celebration was certainly a unique experience for Madden, who registered his fifth career win in WoO LMS competition. He had a Confederate hat placed on his head as he was interviewed by tour announcer Rick Eshelman, and the soldiers feted him with a flurry of loud, smoky gunfire from their Civil War-era pistols. “That was pretty cool,” Madden said of the Victory Lane festivities. “I've never seen anything like that before. That kind of stuff makes winning a race even more fun.” Results (partial) of WoO Late Model Series ‘Rumble on the River V' at Virginia Motor Speedway (Finishing Position/Start/Driver/Laps Completed/Money Won): 1. (3) Chris Madden/50 $10,100 2. (8) Steve Francis/50 $5,650 3. (7) Darrell Lanigan/50 $3,600 4. (12) Ricky Elliott/50 $3,000 5. (1) Jonathan Davenport/50 $2,050 6. (10) Shannon Babb/50 $2,200 7. When Shane Clanton took over the points lead after Friday's stop at Fayetteville, it marked the first time he had been atop the WoO LMS standings since the April 14, 2007, event at Virginia Motor Speedway. His stint at the helm lasted just one race, however, because Darrell Lanigan took over after Saturday's visit to VMS, giving the tour three different points leaders in as many races Clint Smith went through the weekend down one crewman after the recent departure of Jonathan Owensby, who has taken a job in Georgia away from racing. Smith, who would have likely scored a pair of top-10s if he hadn't blown a tire on lap 37 at Fayetteville, said he's planning to press on with Darrell (‘Don Vito') Cooper as his sole mechanic. “Money's tight, so I'm not hunting anybody right now,” said Smith.
Dixie Speedway doesn't open until next Sat., but the off-season has been a sad one. Martha Swims' mother and sister both died Easter Sunday, and 2007 track champion Tim Day's father-in-law died this week. This will be Dixie's 40th season, and they're offering free admission to anyone born in 1969. In August, adult tickets will be only $10. There's an open practice this Sat. night at 7:30. From 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Dixie and the local 4wd clubs host the Sixth annual Mud 4 Blood event. Blood donors are eligible for some nice raffle prizes. http://www.mud4blood.org/ Sister track, Rome Speedway, will host four Sunday night special events beginning with its season opener Memorial Day weekend, Sunday night, May 24. http://www.dixiespeedway.com

Travis Pennington set fast time at East Alabama's United Dirt Late Model Series show, but Mark Whitener of Middleburg, FL, won for the second year in a row. Pennington would finish second with Dewayne Johnson, Dana Eiland, and Johnny Collins, who had to take a provisional and start in a backup car due to an incident in the second B main, rounding out the top five. This Saturday East Alabama has a full racing program featuring the Late Model, Limited Sportsman, Hobby, Bomber, Modified, and Pony Stock Divisions. Racing action starts at 8:00 pm eastern time. www.eamsdirt.com
