Readers, we've done it. We've got the schedule for this week for all 15 GA tracks, and six from AL and SC too - and that's not easy. Two of those - Sugar Creek and 441/Dublin - are returning from dormancy. There are also eight GA tracks not open this week. Keep sending in those results, news releases, and story ideas. Thanks, Dale Terry ddrrtt@earthlink.net

Beau Slocumb Update, from his sister Maggie: Monday, April 13, 2009 Round Three cont'd... ... they are hoping Beau will go home today or tomorrow. His last bag of chemo was started early Sunday morning. He got sick a good bit this round... I thought they were figuring out how to manage the nausea better after the second round but I guess it's different every time. Mom says they have been giving him something to help boost his white blood count and that puts him in a good bit of pain. Please pray that his counts come back up like they are supposed to after this treatment. When they dip too low, they make Beau come in every day for blood work and I think he gets pretty tired of doing that. Keep the prayers coming and keep the pictures coming, too! The ones I've gotten so far are great! beaupictures@gmail.com Macon racer Beau Slocumb has a rare form of soft-tissue sarcoma called Synovial Sarcoma. He had surgery in Macon Jan. 28, and is now at the Univ. of Texas Medical Center for six weeks of chemo treatments. The new Southern Pro Late Model Series will re-open Montgomery Motor Speedway on Saturday evening (April 18) after three years of being silent. The 100 lapper will feature Pro Late Model drivers from throughout the southeast. "We are really excited about this opportunity to re-open this historic speedway," said Vince Whitmire, SPLM Series owner and Promoter. "We welcome drivers to check out our rules and we welcome them to come compete with us." Late Model drivers from thoughout the southeast are expected. MMS has gone through some extensive renovations that drivers and fans can look forward to enjoying. "Seventy-six (drivers) had confirmed they would be here (for practice last week)," general manager James Jones said. "But the (inclement) weather (on Friday) might have turned some of them back. We had drivers call from mid-Georgia, from north Florida, from Tennessee and South Carolina. They're a little gun-shy. They weren't treated well by the management that was here previously. We've got to earn their trust back. We've got to earn back the trust of the vendors. When they drive through the gate, it's the same old Montgomery Motor Speedway. But it's not. It's different, and we have to show them that.” Pure Stock, Super Stock and Open Wheel Modified classes will also compete on the 1/2 mile asphalt oval. Racing begins at 7 PM. www.splmseries.com www.montgomeryspeedway.com

Sugar Creek Raceway, in Blue Ridge, has become a part of the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series for 2009, and running on Friday nights will partner with Saturday night Tri-County Racetrack in Brasstown, NC. This will give drivers in the NeSmith Chevrolet WRS Late Model Division at both tracks added opportunity to race for a Regional title. Sugar Creek's first 2009 race is Friday night. Sugar Creek Raceway and Tri-County Racetrack officials have agreed to work together in 2009, not just with the NeSmith Chevrolet WRS Late Models, but in all divisions. “It’s this kind of cooperation between Friday and Saturday night tracks of working together that has made our 2008 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Co-Promoters of the Year at Penton Raceway in Penton, AL and East Alabama Motor Speedway in Phenix City, AL successful,” NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Director Roby Helm said. “We’re confident Sugar Creek Raceway and Tri-County Racetrack will work in that spirit, and that they too will be successful.” In addition to the crate LMs, Sugar Creek will have weekly races for Econo Hobby, Modified Hobby, Stock Pony Cars, Late Models, and Sportsman divisions. Sugar Creek Raceway is located west of Blue Ridge, GA. Take Scenic Drive 1.8 miles west of State Road 5, and then go 2.2 miles south on Sugar Creek Road. www.nesmithracing.com http://www.sugarcreekraceway.net
441 Speedway, near Dublin, reopens Sat., with races for Road Warriors, Pure Stocks, Super Streets, and Late Models, and the rules are on their website. Admission is $10. We like their Rules 16 and 17: “A time limit of seven minutes will be imposed upon each heat race. The time begins when the initial green flag falls. When the time limit has been exceeded, the race will be declared official when the leader is given the checkered flag. Rookies must begin their heat and feature race from the rear of the field for their first three events (double features are considered two events). “If the time limit is reached prior to the completion of the scheduled laps, a green-white-checkered format will be implemented immediately. There will be one chance given to complete the race event under this format. If a caution is thrown after the green-white-checkered format has begun, the cars will be scored as they cross the line and the race will be considered complete.” Nice aerial picture of 411 Speedway: http://www.441speedway.com/
Lanier National Speedway will host the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified tour Saturday Night. The tour features 600 horsepower open-wheeled modifieds which run 15" wide Hoosier tires, giving the cars added traction to attain speeds up to 125 mph on some of the fastest short tracks in the South. “We love when the modified boys come to Lanier National Speedway,” said Lanier GM Terry Roberts, “The show the drivers and teams put on for the fans is the best out there among the touring series.” 2008 National Champion Teddy Christopher has entered - his first-ever trip to Lanier. “We will have show cars all over the place on Friday,” said Scott Pinner, Lanier’s Media Director. “Look for several cars to be at Sonny’s BBQ in Oakwood, the Wal-Mart Supercenter on Munday Mill Rd, and the Hampton Inn in Flowery Branch. This is a great opportunity for fans to see the cars up close before they hit the track on Saturday night” Last year, George Brunnhoelzl III set fast time at 13.543 sec., 98.353 mph, and won the feature. He's leading the tour points this year. Lanier's all-time record, which will never be beaten, according to USCS winged sprint tour director Pete Walton, is 11.03 sec., set by Kevin Swindell Sept. 3, 2005. In addition to the Open Wheel Modified show, Lanier National Speedway will also host a full card of racing this weekend. www.lanierspeedway.com www.nascarhometracks.com. Brian Ickler came all the way from California to show his dominance in the season opener of the Camping World East Series at Greenville-Pickens, SC, but Hartsville's Jody Lavender was the driver putting on the show Saturday. "What we had was a once-in-a-lifetime race car when everything was just perfect," Ickler said in victory lane at Greenville-Pickens Speedway. "We've run good here before, but this is a great way to start this season. We are happy to be here, and these fans are the greatest." Lavender was involved in an early accident and went to the pits. From there, he worked his way to second. WoO Dirt star Josh Richards had a very respectable fourth place in a rare asphalt race. YOUNG GUNS: Chase Oliver, of Crossville, AL, cancelled his prom date and his tux when the Southern Superstars season opener at Sayre Speedway was postponed due to rain and rescheduled for April 4. He finished second at Huntsville, and third at the rescheduled Sayre show, and leads the points race. “There is no way I can miss the race when we are committed to running for the point’s championship this year,” he said. Last season he was rookie of the year at Birmingham's Super Series. Next race: Montgomery next Sat. www.superstarsracing.com Last year TJ Reaid won his first ever GAS event at New Senoia Speedway (GA). It already looks like he’s going to win a bunch more this season as he scored the win in the season-opening event at Watermelon Capital Speedway. One of the biggest reasons that Reaid has come on strong is the addition of former CRA Champion Chris Gabehart to the race team. “It’s a good feeling to have a car as good as that. I can’t thank Chris Gabehart enough; he’s really brought our team along way,” said Reaid. “It feels good to know that when they start pressuring you that you can out run them." Max Gresham, of Griffin, also won at Senoia last year, and started this year with a win at Mobile in the ASA Southeast Asphalt Tour. At Lanier's ASA SAT race, Gresham and Reaid had some racing contact, and both lost. Reaid chased Gresham around the track, and bumped him, and Gresham retaliated, spinning Reaid - who was hit head-on with lots of damage by Parker Harmons. Officials put Gresham, who turns 16 April 30, in time-out, ending his day, 22 laps down. It'll all be on SportSouth TV: Lanier: 4/28 4:00, 4/29 7:00, 4:30 1:00 a.m., 4/30 3:00, 5/19 4:00 http://www.speed51.com

For most of the first half of Saturday night’s ASA Southeast Asphalt Tour Matt Hawkins Memorial 100 at Lanier National Speedway, Shane Sawyer appeared to be in total control leading by as many as 10 car lengths at one point on the 3/8th-mile oval. And despite briefly losing the lead to Paul Kelly and Jason Hogan midway through the race, Sawyer reclaimed the lead over the final 30 laps and held off several late charges to win the season-opening race. “We had a good car throughout but it’s always tough here when they have two-wide restarts. But we bought our time and were patient and we were able to get the lead and hang on. I thought I was a good race for the fans.” After lapping nearly a third of the field through the first 50 laps, Sawyer got caught up in slower traffic and both Kelly and Hogan were able to slip underneath Sawyer on Lap 58. But three cautions in a nine-lap span beginning on Lap 69 bunched the field allowing Sawyer to use the two-wide restarts to reclaim the lead for good on Lap 78 and never look back. Jason Hogan was able to slide past Kelly on Lap 98 to take second with Kelly finishing third. Michael Lance, who started the race in 17th, was fourth, and pole-sitter Lee Langford was fifth. Chase Elliott started 16th but finished sixth, Jeff Choquette was seventh, Taylor Satterfield eighth, Jeremy Mullinax ninth, and Tyler Millwood finished 10th. Chase Elliott became the youngest driver to start an ASA Southeast Asphalt Tour event. The 13-year-old driver qualified 16th out of 34 cars and steered the Aaron's Dream Machine to a sixth-place finish. “We are trying to win a championship and the only way to ensure one is to be running at every checkered flag and finish ahead of the guys that are running every race. We don’t have to win every race we just have to beat the guys that race every race; it’s as simple as that. We had a good racecar and I might have gotten around Paul (Kelly) but I would have had to get into him to do so and there was no way we could get by Shane (Sawyer) so there really was no point. Paul has always raced me clean so I wanted to do the same,” stated Hogan, the three time series winner last season, and current points leader. Jason Bates used a great start on a Lap 15 restart to grab the lead and then cruised to the victory in the 20-lap open-wheeled modified race. Paul Antley took the lead on the start and then cruised to the win in the 20-lap Supertruck race. The Mini Stock division debuted again after a year off with Steve Hill leading from start to finish to win the 20-lap race. “It was good to come back here to Lanier and it was a tough race,” Hill said. In the Sportsman race, Iceman drivers Mike Davidson, Chris Holbrook, and Terry Martin took the top the top positions after the 20-lap event. Keith Barrett finished fourth and won the Sportsman division and fellow Sportsman driver Jackie Daniel was fifth. In the 20-lap Pro Masters race, Steven Ross grabbed the lead on Lap 15 and then held off Kyle Beattie and Currie Pierce to get the win in the Pro division. Beattie passed Pierce on the final lap to take second and Pierce finished third. Jeff Haynie finished fourth overall and was the Masters division winner. Zach Kittle finished fifth. “Boy that was a great race, just an awesome race,” an excited Currie said. “I tried the best I could to get the win, but it wasn’t meant to be. I’m just glad we all got through the final few laps and I was able to come away with another third place. It’s not a win, but we’re in the points at Lanier so we’ll take third.” Tyler Kivett survived five-cautions to win the 20-lap Legends semi-pro race. Kivett held off a late charge by Dusty Summers, who finished second. Jake Morris was third, Judson Kittle was fourth, and Zach Weaver finished fifth. Kyle Benjamin passed Kyle Wilson on Lap 11 and then cruised to the 20-lap Pro Challenge win. Brody Boswell passed Wilson to take second and Wilson finished third. www.curriepierceracing.com In the 20-lap Bandeleros race, Cody Garland led from start to finish to win in Young Guns beating Nick Hazelwood to the line. In the 15-lap Street Stock event, Bryan Buckner passed Mike Childers on Lap 14 to get the win. However, Buckner was later disqualified after failing post-race inspection making Childers the winner. Jody Trivette was second. Thanks to: Jeff Hart http://www.accessnorthga.com/detail.php?n=219495 Full report at http://www.georgiastockcarracing.com

Florida businessman Eddie Smith, who was a co-owner of some of the vehicles driven by Rich Bickle in the 1990s in what are now known as the NASCAR Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series, is back in the NASCAR garage. Smith has formed a partnership with former heavyweight boxing champion Evander Holyfield to buy the assets of the Chip Ganassi Racing Nationwide Series team. Holyfield has attended races in the past and is familiar with the sport, and Smith said Holyfield will attend races as his schedule permits. In other news, A legal notice that ran Wednesday in a small local newspaper said Holyfield's estate will be auctioned off "at public outcry to the highest bidder for cash" at the Fayette County courthouse on July 1. The 54,000-square-foot home -- located on Evander Holyfield Highway -- has 109 rooms, including 17 bathrooms, three kitchens and a bowling alley. A lawyer said the foreclosure of Holyfield's estate could actually be good news for his client (a mother, seeking child support) noting that an earlier trial uncovered evidence that the boxer had paid a $17,000 electric bill the previous December, largely because of an elaborate light display at the home. Holyfield, the only four-time heavyweight champion, has at least nine children. http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/news/story?id=3428080

Should the Watermelon Capital Speedway be switched back to dirt? "There is no need to start a discussion about making WCS a dirt track. It is an asphalt track and I expect it to remain an asphalt track as long as I run it. I like both asphalt and dirt racing and agree we could probably do better at this time with a dirt track but the work and aggravation of preparing a dirt track is more than I want to take on at this time. "Racing runs in cycles and dirt will fade out and asphalt will prevail over time. "People seem to forget but I have been to Cordele many times when the stands were empty and cars were few and far between. I have pictures of various races and the stands are almost empty. The first race I ran at Cordele in the early 80's when I resumed dirt racing after a long layoff, we had 4 late models show up. Things run in cycles and with the present economy like it is, I was somewhat encouraged with the crowd Saturday night. Hopefully it will get better but if not, we will adjust accordingly. "We try hard to provide a nice clean facility for spectator comfort and good racing and as long as the racers and fans want to support the track as it presently is, we will continue doing what we are doing. If support of the track declines to the point that I feel I can't justify opening it from an expense verses revenue standpoint, then I will close it down and find something else to do on Saturday night. "I hope this clears up any questions on this matter." Posted on the track forum by Marvin Ragan, owner

In the Crate Late Model race, Jody Summerville, of Rome, made it two-for-two in his twenty-five lap feature. Chad Smith, of Rome, started outside pole and finished third. Ben Sumner will be the official flagman of Cochran Motor Speedway starting Saturday. They'll have racing in all divisions each Saturday, through May 23. The Natl. Late Model Series will race May 30. STEVIE JONES DOMINATES WITH BACK TO BACK WINS AT COCHRAN By: Rev. Todd Shearin Veteran late model star Stevie Jones scored his second win in as many weeks Saturday night at CMS. Jones who is also known as “The Gray Ghost,” lived up to that name by disappearing from a star studded field from the drop of the green flag. Jones set quick time and was never challenged throughout the entire race, often leading by a full straight away. Phil Pittman started on the outside pole and battled Jeff Fortner for the runner up spot with Fortner eventually overtaking him. Thirteen cars were on hand for the feature but no one could stay near Jones who powered away on every restart with ease.Stevie and I talked after the race and he wanted me to thank all of the fans for their support. Eric Register claimed the Sportsman feature, his second win of the year. Register took his Fatbaby Racing entry to the front from the third starting spot. Pole sitter Corey Compton and Tim Jenson set the pace early on with Jenson taking the early lead. Register held off Compton to take the win with Josh Odom finishing third. Veteran late model driver Wiley McDaniel made a rare start in the pure stock division pay off by taking the win from the outside pole. McDaniel beat pole sitter Eric Register to the corner at the start and went on to lead every lap. No one checked out on the field in this race with the top five separated by only a few car lengths. Nineteen cars were on hand for the cadet feature. Dustin Miller is a constant frontrunner and was once again the class of the field. Reggie Jones was third. In road warrior action, Sam Ussery took the win over last week’s winner, TJ Woodard. It was good to see Sam back after he flipped his car a few weeks ago. Woodard was very strong and raced Ussery hard for the win. Twelve year old Will Herrington was third. We also thank the DMD racing team of Donnie and Donna DeLoach for sponsoring our childrens activities and prizes.
