Wes Burton and Rob Dubnecay to kick off 2009 season at Watermelon Capital Speedway In 2009, look for the duo of Wes Burton and Rob Dubnecay to make several appearances in both ASALMS Challenge and ASALMS South events. Burton is no stranger to the ASA Late Models Series as he has competed on a part-time basis since 2006. However, it will be the first appearance for Minnesota’s Rob Dubnecay with Ron Varney’s ASA Late Model Series.
In 2008, Wes Burton had his best year to date while piloting a late model. He racked up 5 top 5’s and 9 top 10’s in the 12 events in which he competed, including a $4,000 to win Super Late Model race at Southern National Raceway Park in Kenly, NC. The 2008 season also marked Burton’s first appearance in a super late model on dirt, where he won a heat race and a season best finish of 3rd place at a very tough Cherokee Speedway in Gaffney, SC.
Rob Dubnecay made his return to stock cars in 2008 after a 2 year absence from the racing scene. During the summer, Dubnecay moved his equipment to Kannapolis, NC in care of Wes Burton in order to help make his stock car return. It didn’t take Dubnecay long to get back on track and scored a best finish of 7th at the Thanksgiving Classic in Kenly, NC during his fourth and final race of the year.
This year, the pair will attempt several races in the region. Along with joining the ASA Late Model Series at Watermelon Capital Speedway, they also tentatively plan to attend races at Concord Speedway, O’Reilly Raceway Park, Rockingham Speedway, Bristol Motor Speedway, Nashville Super Speedway, and Iowa Speedway.
In 2009, Wes Burton will again climb aboard a Ford Fusion owned by Stuart Lycett. Burton and Lycett enjoyed success in 2008 with a pair of 6th place finishes at Bristol Motor Speedway in August and Memphis Motorsports Park in November. Burton will carry logos for Stuart Lycett’s driving school, Competition101.
Burton will also carry logos from long-time sponsors C&C Tool & Machine (www.c-ctool.com ), Ace Racing, BMRS, and Schoenfeld Headers.
Rob Dubnecay will be aboard his familiar blue and red #77 Chevrolet Monte Carlo and sponsored by his family owned restaurant chain “Chris & Rob’s Chicago Taste Authority” located in the Minnesota cities of Minneapolis, Fridley, and Saint Paul.
Wes Burton has had an interesting relationship with Watermelon Capital Speedway throughout the years. In 2006, Burton was running 6th in the late stages of the event when he was involved in an incident which relegated him to a poor finish. In 2007, he led the final practice and qualified a stout 5th place among the 43 race entrants.
However, there was a pileup at the front of the pack on lap 3 which sent Burton to the garage early. Things turned around in 2008 when Burton completed the Georgia Asphalt Series event in the 4th position. Going fast has never been a problem at Watermelon Capital Speedway, and 2009 will be no exception. Expect to see Wes Burton in the white #5 Ford Fusion competing in the top 5 throughout the entire event.
New for 2009 is the formation of Wes Burton Performance, Inc. out of Kannapolis, NC. After gaining experience working for NASCAR super-team Hendrick Motorsports for 8 years, followed by a year at Jr. Motorsports in Mooresville, NC, Wes Burton has decided to step out on his own and grow a business in the racing industry.
