(3/11/09) – So far in 2009 it’s been all TAR-HEEL’s… Ray Cook has dominated since the opening bell in Talladega. Well this weekend a new challenger is stepping up to the proverbial plate. Known as the BLAIRESVILLE ASSASSIN or SUPERMAN, Jonathan Davenport has laid claims to not one, but two weekend $10,000. cash prizes and has officially asserted himself into the Southern RANKINGS Top 5. SMOKEY – Smoked Em’ In North Georgia, but Missed the Connection back home… Not to be confused with Gary Wright (no not even the Sprint Car racer) the DREAM WEAVER has been making noise again as of late. Well look at the Crossville, Tennessee ace Randy Weavers also, in this edition of the Southern RANKINGS Report # 090311.
Cook still leads the charge and had a very good chance this weekend of extending his Southern RANKINGS points lead, but is flanked by a pair of fellow Carolina-ians. The SHOW STOPPA Randle Chupp and 2008 Southern RANKINGS Champion Chris Madden are nipping at the TIGER’s spoiler. Nobody could stop the power produced this weekend by JD, as the # 6 “GPS, Xceldyne, Styer’s Curbing” sponsored Rocket Late Model-er who won two $10,000. to-WIN races in less than a 24-hour time span. Saturday, Davenport took the unrankable Crate Late Model feature in Modoc, SC, with his “Moon Farms” sponsored # 49 Fastrak racecar. Sunday no-one had the KRYPTONITE in Gaffny, esp. Madden and not even the turn one concrete wall could keep JD from victory lane.
Meanwhile… Randy Weaver’s been quietly producing some numbers and is tied now with JD for 4th in the Southern RANKINGS. Weaver first tallied a runners up finish at this years BAMA BASH a few weeks back, then rallied to another one, last Saturday at a Southern All-Star event in North Georgia. The # 116 “Patrick Graham Construstion, The Bailey Co., PPM Racing Products, Glenn's Auto Parts” sponsored GRT / Race Engine Design team is still seeking out it’s 1st victory of 2009 with his strong suited Georgia and Tennessee events still to come. Madden did however gain valuable points on Chupp, Saturday night, by putting the # 44 “Century Plastics, Hamricks of Gaffney, Henderson Amusement, All-Star Performance” sponsored / Bloomquist / Clements powered racecar in North Georgia Speedway’s victory lane.
Brandon Kinzer and young Ty Dillon (grandson of NASCAR team owner Richard Childress) also join the Southern RANKINGS with Top 5 finishes. Events were scheduled all across the South this weekend, but most of them have been postponed due to bad weather. Some of the racers earning Top 5 events in the Southern RANKINGS were given credit for National RANKINGS due to their estimated schedules of following national touring series’. James Ward, Ronnie Johnson, Billy Mayo and Anthony White are all just inside the Top 10 in the Southern RANKINGS. With Bub McCool, Eric Turner, Tyler Ivey, Tony Knowles and Kinzer are all knot up for the 10th place in the standings. The Southern RANKINGS, now tallies events paying at least $3,500. to-WIN in their respective regions.
