Boyd's Speedway Result 8-15-08
Boyd's Speedway Result 8-15-08
Another Friday night at the New Boyd's Speedway could only be described by all those in attendence as WOW!!!!!!!! With new owners Richard and Robert Harvey saying thanks to both fans and racers for their support, they increased the purses in all classes without charging a dime more. With the largest car count to date signed in to compete ( Over 100 cars) it was time for the Heat Races to begin. First up A-HOBBY's 18 cars were ready to race for that $500 Purse, in Heat Race #1 Arva Brooks in his Black #3 ( Better known as BOOGER ) would take Heat Race #1 followed by Steve Tate, Patrick Wilson and Aaron Begley. In Heat Race #2 after a week in Alabama Todd Hernandez was back to capture the outside pole starting position followed by Lynn Gibson, Len McNeese and Todd Stafford. Next up Crate Late Model with a full field of 24 cars ready to go Curtis Kline would lead flag to flag in Race #1 followed by Darrel Ownbey, Boonie Gulett and Jared Nichols. In Heat Race #2 Soddy Daisy native Kenny Stanfield would start up front only to drop back early in the heated competition, Blake Stewart from his outside third row would go on to take the win followed by late arriver David Earl Gentry coming from the back to finish a very close second followed by Craig Burrows and Sam Parris. After last weeks long night the B-HOBBY's would be competing in DOUBLE FEATURES on this night, but first up would be Heat Race # 1, Micheal Brooks would finish first followed by Chad Collins and Steve King. In Heat RACE #2 Bobby Phillips took the win followed by Eric Hughs and Tim Totherow. Steel Headed Late Model fielding the largest number of cars to compete for their $1000 28 cars were lined up and ready to go. In Heat race # 1 the red T22 of Mike Tinker would finish in front followed by Jason Cardwell, Reuben Mayfield, David Tinker and newcomer Brandon Williams rounding out the top five. In Heat Race #2 Kayne Hickman would find the top to his liking on this night. He rode the rim to take the outside pole position for the nights feature followed by Glen Seaton, Scott Boyd, Ty McGee and Jerry Coffman. In the last Heats of the night Frontrunner winners were Jonathon Pettey and Kenney Kizzar.
It was now time to pull the seatbelts up tight, grap a cold drink and see what was about to happen in the Big Night Big Purse Features. First up A-HOBBY the front row was all black. The black cars of Arva Brooks and Todd Hernandez would start the features off. Only to see the T6 of Todd Hernandez retire early with a flat rear tire, could anyone remove Arva Brooks from the top spot. Steve Tate would come to the front only to retire to the pits with mechanical problems. Brooks would go on to take the $500 Feature Win followed by last weeks winner Len McNeese, Lynn Gibson and Devon Stewart. Next up Crate Late Model, in a race that could only be described as WOW....... Front row starters Curtis Kline and Blake Stewart would bring the field of 24 cars to the green flag. The battle would heat up between Kline, Stewart, Ownbey and David Earl Gentry. Gentry would start his move to the front first passing Ownbey for third then Stewart for second. Now he found himself right behind leader Kline. In a daring move in turn 4 Gentry would pass Kline on the bottom, as they enter turn 1 Kline repaid the veteran driver from Lewisburg by taking the top spot back. On the next lap while running second Gentry gets high in turn 2 and spins his #56 placing himself in the rear. He pits to replace a rear tire and restarted dead last. Kline would continue to battle with Stewart for the top spot while everyone else was watching a determined David Earl Gentry fight his way through the field. As the race went on he picked the off one at a time first getting back in the top 10, then the top 5. Kline would go on to finish first followed by Stewart, Burrows and Gentry. Gentry only wonder what could have been, but the crowd loved what they saw. B-HOBBY's rolled out next and saw the cautions fly early and often as the 14 car field seemed to try to win the $500 Purse on the first lap. Wheels and Tires were the problem for this punch tonight not just flat but falling off. At the end Chad Collins would take home the $500 followed by Travis Reno, Steve King and Bobby Henson, Jr. Now the largest field of the night The Steel Headed late Models would roll onto the 3/8 mile clay oval to compete for their $1000 first place Prize. The fans were still trying to catch their breath from the Crate Late Models could the Steel Headed boys top that race. The answer was not just YES.. but boy did they. Front row starters Mike Tinker in his T22along with Kayne Hickman H3 would start the battle off early. Hickman wanted the outside and Tinker wanted the inside and thats just where they went. Lap after lap side by side who would win. As everyone watched the battle up front Mark Rosner coming from his 14th starting position started his move. Passing on the top and then the bottom, working his way to the front. What was a two car battle between Hickman and Tinker now became a three car battle. Hickman was bound to stay on the top while Tinker and Rosner took the bottom and middle. On a last lap pass would it be Hickman, Tinker, or Rosner take the win. NEITHER here comes Brandon Williams from nowhere to pass Rosner on the last lap to take the win in front of the standing and yelling crowd. What a finish Williams, Rosner, Hickman, Webb and Coffman finsihing in that order. All that anyone could say at that time was WOW WHAT A RACE!! But the night wasn't over yet The Pony's would come out to compete for their $500 Purse. Terry Smith would finish in front of Michael Combs and Matthew Gainer. Frontrunner's would take to the track next and last weeks winner 14 year old Dustin Cansler would have to start in the rear by rule, he would wait and work very carefully through the field like a seasoned veteran only to come out on top of the field of 13cars. He was followed by Kenny Kizzar, Billy Bailey, Lebron Miller and J D Laney. The last race of the night would be the backup feature for B-HOBBY from last week. Could anyone find a way to keep wheels and tires on for the feature. Bobby Phillips in his #48 would do just that followed by Robby Henson and Tim Totherow. Brandon Armitage would cross the line in third but with all the sheet metal missing from his car from the earlier race, he was declared light and DQ'D. The night was over but what a night is was.
