Known as “The Indianapolis of the South”, Lakewood Speedway was one of the most prestigious stops on several national stock car and open wheel circuits over the years, and the first Lakewood Reunion is being organized by the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame Sat. (Aug. 9) in Dawsonville. Lakewood played host to NASCAR in the 1950s, with hall of fame racers Lee Petty, Tim Flock, Curtis Turner, Junior Johnson, Tiny Lund and others finding victory lane. Indy Cars often made their way to the Atlanta track, with drivers such as Ted Horn, Al Keller, Eddie Sachs and Bill Holland taking top honors. In holding the Lakewood Reunion, the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame hopes to help keep the memory and history of Lakewood alive. As part of the Lakewood Reunion festivities, Georgia Automobile Racing Hall of Fame Association president Marvin Mills will unveil a plaque honoring Lakewood Speedway, and the dozen drivers who lost their lives there. Attendees are asked to bring any personal photos they may have from the speedway to share, and to be scanned into the GRHOF archives. Lakewood Speedway. a one-mile dirt track, was in south Atlanta, where the Lakewood Amphitheatre now entertains music fans - just off I-75 at the Langford Parkway East Exit. The event is free, but there is an optional meal at $15 in advance. GRHOF Attn: Lakewood Reunion P.O. International Sport Compact Auto Racing Series (ISCARS) DASH Touring cars will be at New Senoia Speedway Saturday (Aug. 9) for a Double Header event. With the economy stretching everyone’s pocket book to the limit, ISCARS has decided to run two races at each of the remaining events on the 2008 calendar. “All of our teams are talking about how tight things are for them,” says Randy Claypoole, President of ISCARS. “We want to race, they want to race, but everyone’s budgets are feeling the pain, mostly from the gas/diesel pump. So, beginning with this weekend’s event teams will travel to one track and have two races instead of one. We call them Twin 75’s.” There will be 90 minutes of local division races in between. The ISCARS season has five races in the books. Joey Miller won the first race of the season at Florence Motor Speedway. Since then, it has been 2007 Champ Danny Bagwell showing the way. Bagwell became the fifth driver in DASH history to win four in a row. The list includes Robert Huffman (‘98), Mike Swaim Jr. (‘97), Dean Combs (‘76,’81) and Larry Hoopaugh (‘82). Each went on to win the Championship. All-time DASH Winner is Dean Combs with 60 wins. Combs is the only driver to win six races in a row. There are several drivers determined to interrupt Bagwell’s winning streak. Joey Jones took $300 from his purse win at Franklin County Speedway and posted it as a Bounty to any driver or car owner who can get to the checkered flag before Bagwell. Racing action begins at 7:30. http://www.iscarsonline.com/

Reaid drew an eight out of the hat, sending Potts to the pole position. This was Reaid's forth Bearen Oil Company Pole position in 2008. When the green flag dropped, Potts took the lead followed closely by rookie Max Gresham and veteran Ronnie Sanders. In the meantime, Sanders is making a run to the front. On the restart, Potts got back around Sanders on the back straightaway and was able to maintain the lead until the checkered flag in The Straw Lot/ Game Ready Sportswear Ford Fusion. "I know it was going to be tough to get back around Ronnie (Sanders) because he is a tough competitor," said Potts. "His tires seemed to be getting hot and I took advantage of that." Rounding out the top five were Gresham, Sanders, Russell Fleeman and current GAS Series points leader Ryan Sieg. "This is what it's all about," said Potts in victory lane. "I want to thank my wife for her support and my Crew Chief Josh McCoy. Josh is on to something to make this car so good." The CRA (Champion Racing Association) is bringing their super late model series to South Georgia Nov. 21-23. Their shows attract a good car count, in part due to their heavily-sponsored Contingency Product awards. Nineteen drivers shared $4,135 in contingencies at last weekend’s 100-lapper at Toledo. Winner John VanDoorn received: Holley Performance Award ($100 Cash Bonus), Tex Racing ($150 Product Certificate), Port City Chassis ($100 Product Certificate), ATI ($100 Product Certificate), Pro Shocks ($100 Product Certificate), Hawk Performance ($75 Product Certificate), PitStopUSA.com ($25 Product Certificate), Klotz Lubricants (One Case Of Racing Oil), Fatheadz.com (One Pair Of Sunglasses). We don’t know the contingencies for any of the area traveling series, but we hope they’re as good. The CRA will be the featured race at Nashville’s All American 400 Nov. 1-2.
