CRA also has the All American 400 ($10,000 to win) at Nashville Nov. 1-2, and Five Flags in Pensacola has the Snowball Derby Dec. 4-7 ($20,000 to win). SPEEDWAY NEWS: USA Intl. Speedway, a 3/4 mile asphalt track in Lakeland, FL, will close after this weekend’s late model and truck race. The 47-acre site, close to I-4 between Orlando and Tampa, will become an industrial park. The track was once owned by Hooter’s Restaurants. In 2007, it was sold for $6.2 million, according to tax records. http://www.ocala.com/article/20080730/NEWS/141418585/1340/NEWS&title=Lakeland_speedway_to_hold_last_race_on_Saturday The famous Concord (NC) Motorsports Park will make the Pro Late Models (with crate motors) their top weekly class in 2009, ending years of featuring super LMs, which will become a support class. The track listed cheaper motors, cheaper chassis, and cheaper repairs as reasons. http://www.speed51.com/2008_Stories/Tracks/CMP_Pro_Late_Announcement_7_30.html NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series veteran Rick Crawford of Mobile has ended his bid to re-open the dormant Montgomery (AL) Motor Speedway. Crawford issued a statement that said he would no longer pursue the deal for the asphalt track with current owner Bill Manfull "in the wake of the decision, or lack of a decision, from the Board of Adjustments for the City of Montgomery, Ala." A group of residents who live near the track protested last Thursday when Crawford applied for an operating license. The Board of Adjustments asked both sides to try to work out their differences and postponed a decision. The residents said they were concerned about noise, traffic and security. http://www.al.com/sports/birminghamnews/index.ssf?/base/sports/121699178222740.xml&coll=2 Track photo: http://www.imdrafting.com/boothroadparkinglot.htm Both South Georgia and Peach State, and probably a few others too, are chasing the Hooter’s Pro Cup, hoping to host the cancelled Oct. 18 race at USA Intl.

Edge’s team dedicated the win to crew member Sam Ivey who passed away earlier this month after a courageous battle with cancer. Edge, Mitch Fulford, and Eddie Peacock are within 11 points in the season’s standings after 12 shows. http://www.cochrangaspeedway.com/

Known as “The Indianapolis of the South”, Lakewood Speedway was one of the most prestigious stops on several national stock car and open wheel circuits over the years, and the first Lakewood Reunion is being organized by the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame Aug. 9 in Dawsonville. Lakewood played host to NASCAR in the 1950s, with hall of fame racers Lee Petty, Tim Flock, Curtis Turner, Junior Johnson, Tiny Lund and others finding victory lane. Indy Cars often made their way to the Atlanta track, with drivers such as Ted Horn, Al Keller, Eddie Sachs and Bill Holland taking top honors. In holding the Lakewood Reunion, the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame hopes to help keep the memory and history of Lakewood alive. As part of the Lakewood Reunion festivities, Georgia Automobile Racing Hall of Fame Association president Marvin Mills will unveil a plaque honoring Lakewood Speedway, and the dozen drivers who lost their lives there. Attendees are asked to bring any personal photos they may have from the speedway to share, and to be scanned into the GRHOF archives. Lakewood Speedway. a one-mile dirt track, was in south Atlanta, where the Lakewood Amphitheatre now entertains music fans - just off I-75 at the Langford Parkway East Exit. At East Alabama Saturday, the National Late Model Series races for $3,000 To Win. Support classes include Limited Sportsman, Bomber & Pony Stock. East Alabama reports: In the Late Model division (last Sat.) we had a spectacular race with the gifted rookie Richie "Rocketman" Stephens taking on the legendary champion Dana Eiland. Dana came for battle with a new pedigree blue K9. He was sporting the Ben Thomas Racing BTR Scorpion house car, the same one in which William Thomas won previous races. In the other corner the Rocketman, with a brand new Crate 604 in his Championship winning BTR Scorpion. Rocketman had already won the points for the year to be the 2008 EAMS Late Model Track Champion but he had something else to prove to his fans and haters. The Master of Faster Dana Eiland threw the first serious blow by setting the fast time in qualifying with a 16.03 to earn the pole for the feature. Another talented rookie, Chase Edge had also just installed a new 604 Crate and was on the outside pole when the green dropped ... The K9 stepped into some of that slick water and pushed up into the cushion with Eldridge right behind him. The Rocketman saw his opportunity and fired his Scorpion under Eldridge and Eiland and came out of turn two with the lead. Eiland ran down the Rocketman and even went door to door, which had all the fans on their feet, some cheering, some booing, but everybody got into this race. Finally the Rocketman delivered the knock out blow and got five car lengths ahead of the K9 and clearly made his point. It didn't matter about his old engine and all the protest, he made this great move to take the lead, because he is a bonafide champion. In the Pony Stock, division Brandie Gatlin picked up her first feature victory ever. http://www.eamsdirt.com/

PROMOTER’S BIGGEST LIES: TrackChaser Guy Smith sends an amusing story: The Outback Track at Susquehanna (PA) finally opened this past Saturday, with 33 classes listed on the track webpage, they had a total of nine entries, six were karts and three were quarter midgets. Nine entries in 33 classes makes an average of 0.27 cars per class, or approximately one car for every four classes. When they put three karts on the track at the same time to practice, there was terrible dust ... pretty bad. BUT WAIT!...I just looked on the track website and it says that the opening was VERY SUCCESSFUL BY ALL STANDARDS. Lavonia Speedway will be racing Friday night with six Divisions of good ole Southern style racing entertainment. Under New Ownership, the Lavonia Speedway just keeps on getting better & better each week. On the card are Limited Latemodels /Fastrak Latemodels / Hobby / Enduro / Stock 4Cyl / and the Up Front Stocks.
