[^^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^^ IN OUR OPINION ... (and we’d like to hear yours) ^^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^^ Dirt racing would be better if qualifying was eliminated, and replaced by a pill draw, heat races, and inversions. For the past ten days, we’ve been watching the Southern Nationals and the Southern All Stars - nine shows. Both series put the fast qualifiers in front to start the feature. The pole sitter, determined via qualifying, has won five. The outside pole sitter has won once, and was 2nd once. In one race, the pole sitter crashed. Out of nine races, with some of the best Super Late models in the area, the winner started upfront six times. Earlier in 2008, the Southern All Stars have had seven shows, with five won from the pole. and one won from the outside pole. I think a pill draw, eliminating laps of boring qualifying, would produce a better show with more passing, more lead changes, and more fan excitement. At a minimum, racing would be greatly improved, for the paying fans, by inverting eight or ten. Both the Southern Nationals and the Southern All Stars are fine series, and are the top payers in the area. But the shows, in 2008, have not been very competitive and some changes are needed. Eleven of the 16 races have not seen a pass for the lead, because the fastest car starts in front. If the top six or eight or 10 were inverted, the show would be better. If qualifying was eliminated, shows would be shorter. If heat races set the line-up for the feature, there will be more racing and more exciting races. And the fans would be happier and more entertained, and would buy more tickets.

Lanier’s Saturday show has lots of asphalt racing, plus spectator racing too. Lanier Speedway is urging race fans to send a birthday card to Taylor Hulsey, a nine-year-old girl with a brainstem tumor. She cannot be around other kids, and won’t be having a party. Last year her mom’s efforts brought in 200 cards. Her birthday is Aug. 14. Taylor Hulsey 107 Cliff Payton Cir. Newnan, GA 30263 More details at http://www.lanierspeedway.com/
Atlanta Motor Speedway’s summer Legends racing series, Thursday Thunder, returns to AMS’ quarter-mile “Thunder Ring” for Joe Momma Night. Any fan named Joe accompanied by his mother will be both admitted to Thursday Thunder for free. During intermission, the Thriller Viper Jet dragster will run on the pit road drag strip, perhaps hitting 250 mph. Notes from last week: - With the 23rd win of his career last Thursday, Casey Roderick now sits in sole possession of all-time Thursday Thunder wins after breaking his tie with Reed Sorenson. This season alone, Lawrenceville’s Roderick has passed NASCAR upstarts Joey Logano and Sorenson to approach the most wins in Thursday Thunder history. Doug Stevens sits in first all time with 27 wins. (Unless there is a problem, Sorenson’s 100th NASCAR Cup start will be at New Hampshire.) - Powder Springs’ Jordan Coker won two feature races on one day last Thursday, both in come-from-behind fashion. Jumping to the lead on laps 11 and eight respectively in the two races, Coker gained the Chargers division points lead with his first win and padded it with the second. - By virtue of his Faster Pastor 2008 win during week seven’s intermission, Keith Strickland from McDonough’s Solid Stone Ministries will lead the invocation for the Pep Boys Auto 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race on Sunday, October 26. Casey Roderick, of Lawrenceville, Ga., made it two in a row in the Pull-A-Part Legends Car Pro division, with 28 cars starting.

Nice video of racing history guru Jeff Smith and Rome Speedway: http://www1.romenews-tribune.com/multimedia/rome/video/1291 There’s also video there of a deer, DQ’d for having six legs.
TrackChaser and fine writer Allan Brown, who has seen 55 races at 50 tracks in 22 states this year, reports: “ We then headed off to Rome Speedway (GA) for another Southern All Star race that night. This time, young Travis Pennington walked away from the field and scored the first big win of his career. He is the son of famous South Carolina driver Jack Pennington. Travis certainly impressed me as he ran a very smooth line, lap-after-lap, and when he got into lapped traffic he showed much more patience than most other 17 year olds. He never made a mistake in 50 laps and was never was in trouble.” Another fans posted on 4m: Little lightning strikes at Rome Southern All Star race!!! The kid set on the pole, led every lap, just drove the wheels off the car. I saw Stan Massey and Leon Sells - his 2 uncles - were there congratulating him and his dad. Jack couldn’t be happier. Great job Travis.”
Nothing was going to stop Shane Clanton from finally breaking into Victory Lane on the 2008 World of Outlaws Late Model Series in the ‘Wild West Tour’ finale at Boone County (NE) Raceway. Not the series points leader. Not lapped traffic. And certainly not an overheating engine. Clanton, 32, of Locust Grove, Ga., fought through all the obstacles to score a very satisfying win in Monday night’s 50-lap A-Main at the three-eighths-mile Nebraska oval. “Finally!” Clanton exclaimed after becoming the last driver ranked among the top nine in the WoO LMS points standings to score a win this season. “We’ve been close so many times this year but just couldn’t get the job done, so it feels good to win again – real good.” www.worldofoutlaws.com

Fort Payne Motor Speedway will move its stock car racing program to Saturday nights effective this Saturday night. The track has operated on Friday nights since May, and the move to Saturday nights is being made to make it easier for both fans and competitors to make it to the 3/8-mile clay oval. “We talked to a lot of fans and competitors before making this move to Saturday nights,” Fort Payne Motor Speedway Promoting Partner Mike Vaughn said. “People were just finding it too difficult to get off work, get their Friday activities done, and then get to the track. We feel moving our racing program to Saturday nights will make it easier on everyone.” The Fort Payne Motor Speedway stock car racing program consists of five Divisions that include Super/Limited Late Models, NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Late Models, A Hobby, B Hobby, and Pony. www.fortpaynemotorspeedway.com
Boyd’s Speedway, near Chattanooga, had 96 cars at last week’s show, and a good crowd too. The updated track has done well this summer. The Advance Auto Parts Thunder Series returns Aug. 8 for a $4000 to win super late model show. Boyd’s fans are now active at http://www.mrmracing.net/messageboard/
Danny Martin, Jr., netted his second American Sprint Car Series Rebel Region feature win of the year by wiring the field in Saturday's 25-lap main event at Cochran Speedway. Starting from the front row outside, Martin outgunned polesitter Michael Miller at the drop of the green flag and led throughout aboard the Motorheads-powered Martin Structures No. 00 Shaw. Martin beat current series point leader Kenny Adams to the line, with Bryn Gohn, Matt Tiffany and Gavin Thomas rounding out the top five. PROMOTION IDEAS: Rocky Top Raceway (OH) hands out a concession stand menu when you pay admission ... Bruce Dowell picked up a $100 prize for turning on his side after climbing the Jersey barrier at the Van Buren (MI) County Youth Fair show, reports track chaser Ed Esser Bowman Gray... sat with friend Rick Goodman and was treated to really warm weather, but a rather bizarre night of racing. I'd heard there was a lot of bumping and grinding at Bowman Gray, and this night was no exception, in fact it might have been more than usual, as in the 100 lap feature Burt Myers spun Junior Miller out on lap one or two. Miller went to the rear, and it took him another 80 laps or so to get back up to Myers, and Junior proceeded to stuff Myers in the third turn and Junior went on to the victory. But that wasn't the most bizarre, as in one of the other features, a couple of guys went at it during the race, and then after the race they got our of their cars in the second turn (where we were setting), and proceeded to beat on each other until the cops got there to break it up. Both drivers were hand-cuffed and led away. That was a first, seeing two drivers being hauled off to jail. Bowman Gray was much different than I imagined, that was for sure. They announced the crowd as 12,000. With this much entertainment, I can understand why people flock to Bowman Gray. (from trackChaser Allan Brown)
The state of asphalt Super Late Models in GA continues to decline, and the PASS South Series show at Lanier Aug. 2 has ben cancelled. “The decision to cancel the race at Lanier was a mutual decision with the management and staff of Lanier National Speedway,” said PASS’s Tom Mayberry. “We have enjoyed our association with Lanier over the years and we look forward to bringing PASS back in 2009.” PASS South raced at The ‘Melon April 26, with Perry Brown winning, Bubba Pollard, of Senoia, second, and Ryan Seig, of Tucker, third. NASCAR Cup Driver David Ragan was fourth. They had 25 cars, including six from Georgia, but only 12 cars were at the June 20 PASS show at Raleigh, NC. The ‘Melon will be their only GA show in 2008. PASS South will highlight The Howler Sat., Oct. 18, at Greenville-Pickens. PASS South has been part of Lanier’s Saturday of Speed in 2006 and 2007, and raced at Peach State in 2007. www.racewithpass.com

Dennis Kiker, a Long time employee at the Talladega Short Track, died in his sleep last Friday from an apparant heart attack. Dennis was the security person at the pit gate who greeted drivers and fans alike with a smile and a kind word. Dennis had open heart surgery about ayear or so ago and was doing well. He kept his aches, pains, and problems to himself as he was more concerned about how someone else was doing, rather than himself. Dennis will be missed greatly by TST staff, racers, and fans alike.
Clint Smith, traveling with the World of Outlaws dirt LM series, says “I like any track I win at.... As a driver the speed is no problem – we just hold the button down and go,” regarding the Belleville (KS) high banks where he won in 2007.
In front of a near capacity crowd, Anderson Motor Speedway Late Model Track Champion Ralph Carnes took his first ever Georgia Asphalt Series win by passing Randy Porter of nearby Easley, SC, at the halfway point in the UpState 100 presented by Thomas Concrete and RS Trucking. Porter had won the GAS Series event earlier in the season at AMS. "I wanted to win this one", said Carnes. "We haven't won in over a year and this win is really sweet and we had some tough luck earlier this season here." Carnes was the SUNOCO/Bearden Oil Company Pole Award winner with an extremely fast 15.697 lap around the 3/8 mile oval. - A good contingent of Palmetto State drivers were on hand including, Carnes, Porter, Addiss, Tommy Stokes and Justin Ashley. - Another top 10 finish by GAS Series veteran Nick Potts of Jefferson, Georgia. Potts has finished in the top 10 in all 7 GAS Series events in 2008. The October 12th GAS Series event at Peach State Speedway has been rescheduled to October 4th at Peach State. This avoids a near-conflict with the ASA South show at Senoia Oct. 11. Two events have been added to the inaugural season for the RC Cola / MoonPie ASA Southeast Asphalt Tour: Rockingham Speedway’s road course August 29th and 30th, and Lanier National Speedway Saturday, September 13th. The event at Lanier National Speedway on Saturday, September 13th, will be the inaugural “James Garrison Memorial,” a 100-lap event for the ASA Southeast Late Models. That date was originally occupied by an ASA SAT race at Watermelon Capital Speedway in Cordele, GA, but that event has been rescheduled for Saturday, October 18th. Two events at Myrtle Beach Speedway, on August 16th and October 18th, have been cancelled. Also, the October 4th race at Concord Motorsport Park has been removed from the schedule. ASA SAT is in negotiations with three different venues to host a race on October 4. Currently, Jay Middleton leads Taylor Satterfield, John Bolen, Chris Fontaine and Preston Peltier in the chase for the inaugural RC Cola / MoonPie ASA Southeast Asphalt Tour championship. The 5th annual Vintage Nationals in Augusta will be Sept. 13 at Diamond Lakes Regional Park.
