GEORGIA STOCK CAR RACING JULY 10-17, 2008

The ASCS winged sprint cars are at Dixie Speedway in Woodstock Saturday for $2000 to win 25-lap feature. The series has gone to a pill-draw format, eliminating qualifying, using two or three heats, plus a redraw for the top eight, to set the feature starting order.
The favorite to win is series points leader Kenny Adams, of Malabar, FL, who has won four the nine ASCS features in 2008, and he has three career wins at Dixie. Adams recently won the $4,000 first place prize in the 3rd Annual URC Rislone Sprint Nationals at Williams Grove (PA) Speedway - a show which attracted 52 cars.
Chasing Adams into the weekend is 19-year-old Matt Tiffany of Daytona Beach, FL, with Bryn Gohn of Malabar, FL, another 26 points back in third. Nineteen-year-old Samantha Taylor of Bonney Lake, WA, is just another eight points back in fourth, with Winter Park, Florida's Red Stauffer rounding out the current top five in points. Samantha Taylor is one of the few ladies in sprint car action, and flies in from her Washington home.
Dixie and ASCS official Larry Sams are hoping for 20 or more cars Sat., but recent races at Green Valley, Oglethorpe, and Swainsboro have drawn have only drawn 13-15 cars.
Sams has been contacting sprint car drivers this week, and expects the ASCS "racing family" will turn out, although there are competing races for ASCS-type cars at DeSoto (FL) Super Speedway and an ASCS sprint car week in MO, OK, and AR. He says two drivers are putting two cars, and all their parts, into one hauler to save fuel money.
Only four Georgians are known to be racing sprint cars:
Clint Weiss, of Columbus
Matt Linder, of Hoschton
Nick DeFeo, of Marietta
Brian Thomas, of Commerce
Some teenagers are moving into sprint cars, including two ASCS drivers stepping up from mini-sprints. Two of the ASCS regulars are in college.
Dixie Speedway is located in Woodstock, GA, off of I-75 Exit 277, then six miles east on SR 92, then north. For more information, contact the track at 770-926-5315.

Brett Butler, of Snellville, heads to Motor Mile Speedway (VA) this weekend for the USAR Hooters Pro Cup "K-Mart 250," and is a solid contender for the win. At this time last year, Butler was fighting to stay inside the top 30 of the Championship Point Standings. This year he sits 16th in Northern Div. points.
His No. 99 VERVE Energy Drink Team started the season with No Owners Points, meaning No Provisionals – and they have solidly placed the No. 99 into the starting field at each event.
"We’ve ran really strong," said Butler. "Our finishes haven’t even come close to showing how strong we have run, but even with that, we have still managed to solidly get ourselves inside the top-20 of the points."
Matt Hawkins, of Canton, is now fourth in Southern Div. points. Other Georgians are 15th Dusty Williams, of Guyton; 26th John Wes Townley, of Athens; and Michael Phelps, of Suwanee, 28th.
Maggie Slocumb reports that the Pro Cup Brothers Racing Team car, driven by her brother Beau, has ended it’s season after two races, due to the economy. Beau will continue to run his #08 Late Model in select ASA South, GAS and ASA Southeast Asphalt Tour races - next at The ‘Melon Aug. 2. www.beauslocumb.com
Special Pro Cup shows coming up are at Bristol’s high banks Wed., Aug. 20, and at Rockingham Sat., Nov. 1.

Suwanee rookie Michael Phelps, in the no. 45 Bowen Family Homes-Cunningham Motorsports Dodge, unofficially posted the quickest speed (176.010 mph) in ARCA RE/MAX Series open testing last week at Kentucky Speedway. Cunningham Motorsports recently became Penske Racing’s official ARCA RE/MAX Series development team.
Matt Hawkins, of Canton, who won at Iowa Speedway in his career-first series start back in April, was second quickest overall at 175.382 mph. Hawkins also made contact with the turn two wall earlier in the day.

At Swainsboro last week, Johnnie Tucker was disqualified in post race inspection and Albert Cosnahan picked up the $2000 R & R Electrical Crate Late Model win. Chaz Haskins second, Jimmy Sharpe third, Robert Diekemper fourth, and Terry Lumley fifth. Swainsboro is off this week, but returns next week with Ray Cook’s Southern Nationals Friday (July 18) and their regular show Sat.

“My new historical worldwide auto racing site is now available. Keep in
mind that only the tracks section is well underway at this point,
although I did add a few random records in the other categories to give
an idea how it will look as time goes on. The introduction page may help
to explain things a bit also.
“A lot of work has gone into this site already but I've only scratched
the surface, so don't forget to return periodically and see what's been
added.”
from Trackchaser Will White www.autoracingrecords.com

Guy Smith reports: Today I called Terry Keeney and asked him about the Dublin, GA, track. He confirmed that the track is not running this year, has not run, and will not be running under his promotion...The track is for sale or lease...He says he is building a better track nearby. He did say the Dublin track is very nice, if I was interested.

Joey Miller, of Wilmington, NC, and Danny Bagwell, of Cordova, AL, lead the ISCARS points standing as they head to Dillon, SC, for a 150 lap race Sat. Sunday, the series has a test session at Rockingham. ISCARS, descended from the NASCAR Dash series and using reduced-size NASCAR replicas , will have a 150-lap race at Senoia Aug. 9. http://www.iscarsonline.com

Michael Moats has posted some excellent pictures of the renovated Boyd’s Speedway: http://www.mrmracing.net/boyds.html

Ryan Crane, of Panama City, FL, took his first ever win in the GAS Series in the Toyota Tundra -Independence 125 at Peach State. This was only Crane's second start with the series. Ryan Sieg, of Decatur, took over the points lead from Russell Fleeman of Dacula. This was the first time Fleeman has not led the series points since last summer. Sieg holds a slim 6 point lead over the 2007 GAS Series Champion.
Michael Phelps, of Suwanee, made his first start of 2008 with the GAS Series. Phelps has been racing with the ARCA/ReMax Series this season. Phelps' evening ended with a hard crash in turn 3. Former Peach State Speedway Champion Clay Dale of Jefferson, had a top 10 finish in only his second start with the series in 2008.
Crane, from Panama City, FL, is a Florida State Univ. business law grad. His big wins include the 2006 Rattler at South Alabama, the Five Flags (FL) Snowflake in 2007, and the 2008 pro late model Rattler at South Alabama.
Crane has two more Peach State GAS races on his schedule: Oct. 4 and the World Crown Nov. 7-9. The crew chief and consultant for his Ford Fusion is Mike Garvey.
After leaving Peach State, Crane won the ASA Southeast Asphalt Tour at Nashville, after Preson Peltier got the checkered flag and the guitar from the Music City Motorplex. Post race tech revealed that Peltier had an illegal cold air box on his car - giving Crane his second win of the weekend.

Toccoa Speedway Tech Director Boyd Kelley made an attempt to P&G the engine of George Reese Sr. this past Saturday night, June 21st. Reese Sr. refused to allow Kelley to P&G the engine. FASTRAK asked the track to put it it writing and that letter was received this morning, Weds June 25th, delivered in person by Kelley.
Under the guidelines of the FASTRAK Racing Series, any competitor refusing to be teched is automatically disqualified and considered "illegal". That competitor is barred for 365 days and must pay a $1000 fine before being allowed to run another FASTRAK event be it Touring or Weekly Sanctioned. This includes all FASTRAK weekly sanctioned tracks and touring regions across the country.

The FASTRAK Series proved once again why it is the fastest growing and most competitive racing series in the country, in Saturdays 4th annual $20,000 “Fireworks and FASTRAK“ event at Lavonia. In the 50 lap main event, Grant Jordan, of Bowman, GA, was able to hold off Inman, SC, driver David Smith, to collect the $5000.00 first place check. Jordan assumed the point when Timbo Mangum relinquished the lead on lap 18 after contact with another car in heavy lapped traffic. In the 33 laps that remained, Smith would challenge Jordan for the lead on over 30 occasions in a classic duel which had the huge crowd in attendance on their feet many times. Following Jordan and Smith across the line, was Ryan Gifford, Kenny Peeples and Dustin Morris. For complete story and full field results, go to www.fastrakracing.com

Good Night at the track, track in good shape expecially after the rain shower we had. No fights tonight or torn up race cars like last week.
There will be DOUBLE POINTS in Hobby and Adv.4 this week.
We did not shoot fireworks because they said we had to have a permit. Never had to have one before this year, and they said we had to notify them five days prior to the show. They told us that on Wed. Thats Barrow County for you!

NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver Rick Crawford has reached an agreement in principal to buy the half-mile Montgomery (AL) track, according to Doug Carwyle, a local businessman who helped broker the deal.
The only stipulation to the sale is that the city of Montgomery grant a license allowing the track to hold races. Kevin Radvany, who handles public relations for Crawford's race team, said track representatives will make the request with the city licensing board July 17.
"Outside of that one thing, it's a done deal," said Carwyle, who is expected to help manage the track once Crawford takes ownership.

Promotion ideas: “I made the trek to the Airport Speedway where we enjoyed a mostly fast paced show slowed only by a lengthy intermission. I used the down time to sample bake sale goodies, with all money collected going into the driver's point fund. Boo to all those that
waited until the stuff was half price.” (trackchaser Gordy)

Kasson (MN) Speedway is switching shows from Sunday nights to Thursdays. “(Sunday) does not work anymore,” said promoter Scott Mondus, “and in reality, it hasn’t for a long time.” (from NSSN)

Vacation report: Made the long trip to western PA at the end of June, and saw a great winged sprint car show at Williams Grove - nearly 70 cars in the 358 and 410 classes.
Unfortunately, the WoO LM show at Lernerville was rained out Sat. and Sun. Hadn’t planned to be there for Friday’s heats and prelims, which all the WoO people said were the best of 2008.
