GEORGIA STOCK CAR RACING JUNE 26-JULY 10, 2008
A big two weeks coming up on the tracks, starting with Boyd’s Grand Re-Opening Friday with the Advance Auto Parts Thunder Series super LMs, a big field of UDLMC LMs Saturday at Golden Isles, and two features - Top Track crates and Supers - at Rome Sunday. Dixie and Rome both shoot off their fire works a week early. Next week Fort Payne has their first major NeSmith LM show, the GAS Series takes on Peach State, and Lanier has one of their Super Six pro late model shows. There’s fireworks everywhere too. Be sure to look down at the end for a suggestion to Birmingham’s problem. No newsletter next week. Vacation and a birthday trip take me to Pennsylvania and the legendary Williams Grove Speedway for 410 and 360 sprint car races, and to Lernersville for what is usually the best WoO LM show of the season. Keep the news coming.

The 2008 race season at Birmingham is back on schedule, after a dispute with the City of Birmingham was resolved (see B’ham News article below). The season resumes with the Magic City 200 on July 2-3, with The Birmingham Super Series 100 lap race with other divisions also running. BIRMINGHAM SUPER SERIES POINTS TOP 5 1.KenMcFarland 380 2.Chris Serio 321 3.Justin South 306 4.Brandon Parker 305 5.Gary Nix 302 http://www.bir-raceway.com/ --- ---- ---- ---- http://www.al.com/news/birminghamnews/index.ssf?/base/news/1213949777290510.xml&coll=2 Mayor proposes moving Birmingham International Raceway from Fair Park, providing $1 million to help build new track Friday, June 20, 2008 by JOSEPH D. BRYANT - News staff writer Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford on Thursday proposed relocating the Birmingham International Raceway from Fair Park to city-owned property off Daniel Payne Drive. Langford met with raceway officials and presented a plan to move the track to a site near Daniel Payne Industrial Park in northwest Birmingham. The city, under his proposal, also would give the BIR $1 million to help construct the new facility. "I guarantee you we can make this happen, and it will grow," Langford said after meeting with BIR manager Joey Sims and other track supporters. "All of us are on the same page. We want racing to continue in the city." There has been auto racing continuously at Fair Park for more than 80 years, and the tradition goes back more than a century. Langford said the current race track has been neglected for decades, and the best option is to create a new BIR with better amenities and the ability to attract more fans and revenue. The Fair Park track was last paved in 1972. In addition, Langford said, the track does not fit into the city's plan to redevelop Fair Park. The mayor's plan calls for an indoor track, equestrian facilities, an Olympic-sized swimming stadium and other facilities at the site in western Birmingham. "The new development is not conducive to continuing to operate racing," Langford said. "We don't want to lose the history of the BIR but, at the same time, that whole climate of the Fair Park area is going to change." The plan is subject to approval by the City Council. The $1 million would come from old and completed capital projects. Langford said the city would facilitate the move, but the majority of money needed for redevelopment must be raised by BIR. "The ball is in their court," he said. The city would benefit from the project by having land back on the tax rolls, along with increased activity and more visitors. Racing at the fairgrounds goes back to 1889, when a one-mile dirt horse track was built parallel to Third Avenue. The current facility was built in 1925. Sims said he liked the proposal, which targets an area off Interstate 65 near a revamped Lassiter Mountain Dragway. Each venue would complement the other, Langford said. A larger oval track and a half-mile drag strip would create the potential to host larger gatherings, Sims said. "I think it can be big," Sims said. "It shows they are committed to keeping racing alive here in Birmingham." Sims said 25 to 30 acres would be needed for a new track. In its current state - with low attendance, high overhead and the need for upgrades - the course loses money for both the city and course operators, Langford said. Langford said operators of the raceway will be allowed to continue racing at the current location, without a lease, for at least the rest of this year while plans are completed for revamping Fair Park. --- ---- ---- ---- We’ve got an idea: The race fans and promoters in Birmingham can find a solution on the east side of town at I-20 exit 140, where George Barber has built a world-class sports car track, and the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum, which houses his collection of 1000 motorcycles and hundreds of racecars. The track has about one major event per month, and can accomodate crowds of over 50,000. A new three-eighths or four-tenths mile asphalt track could be built there, sharing the existing parking lots, and racing on the weekends when big public events are not scheduled on the sports car track. Double events might even be possible, with daytime sports car races on the unlighted track and evening races on the oval under the lights. Racing in Birmingham has a long tradition dating back to 1889, and at the current Fairgounds track since 1925. Adding a new oval at Barber Motorsports Park would be a good move. --- ---- ---- ----

Goodguy Doug Turnbull - usually called Fireball on Herb Emory’s WSB Radio show - published eight predictions on the 2008 NASCAR season, and a couple aren’t looking too hot: 3. Expect breakout seasons from Montoya, Mears and Sorenson 10. The TV ratings and attendance numbers will continue to slide He’s right on with a couple too: 1. Earnhardt Jr. will have an impressive debut at Hendrick, but no championship 4. More teams will sell to investors, merge, or shut down 5. Toyota will be in Victory Lane this season 6. The open wheel-driver experiment will flop http://www.geocities.com/avsf120/2008doug.html
Well over 50 teams say they will be on hand at Goldden Isles, near Brunswick, Saturday for what the United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series (UDLMCS) has billed as the 1st Annual Tri-State Championship. If all goes as planned this will be the biggest turnout for the dirt touring series that is turning heads in 2008. "We are probably going to bust 60 cars this time", UDLMCS promoter Ken Kinney said a few days ago. "This should be the biggest event of the year to date, it just keeps growing." A list of the expected drivers is on the website. Each event on the UDLMCS tour is broadcast live (audio only)via the Internet by Real Racin' USA where technically feasible. The series returns to Golden Isles Sept. 13, and is at Waycross Aug. 9 and at Screven Oct. 4. All these shows are $3000 to win. It seem that certian drivers can get away with everything and some get hammered for just bumping a car just one time. I know there are alot of fans and drivers that are pissed @ me right now, but you need to go upstairs next week and talk to people in press box(not the score keeper either) and see what they have to say.
Drivers like Matt Hawkins, of Canton, can overcome the odds of running at a track that has not been kind to them in the past. Coming into Myrtle Beach Speedway (SC), Hawkins’ average finish was 18.5 in The Hooters Pro Cup Series. That was before Hawkins had his best outing ever at “The Beach.” He scored a third-place finish Saturday night in the Greased Lightning 250 and got the monkey off his back that has plagued him during the last few events. “It was fun racing with everyone tonight,” said Hawkins. “I was running the bottom and others were running the top, so I was mixing it up pretty good tonight. This is an excellent run after the three bad weeks we have had. We’ll work on this, take some notes, and hopefully come back next year and be a little bit better.” After starting seventh, Hawkins rode for the first fifty laps before he started moving up in the pack. A long green-flag run played havoc with most of the field. Several guys fell a lap behind the pace. Hawkins was still riding in the top ten, as the leaders put all but eight cars down a lap. Hawkins held on long enough to stay on the lead lap when the first yellow came out. Great pit strategy allowed him to move into the top five. Right off the restart, Hawkins charged to the front and took the lead on lap 187. The run up front was short lived, as eventual race winner Mark McFarland would go back by after only a handful of laps. Hawkins slipped back to third and rode out the remaining laps to score another solid top-five finish, his career-best at Myrtle Beach. “I still don’t like this place a whole lot,” added Hawkins. “Actually, it really surprised me, and we had a shot at the win tonight. I can’t say I dislike it too much now. We expect to run well, but it’s always good to have momentum going into the next race. It can really lift you up a bit. We really go to the track every week thinking we can win the race each week.” Next up for the talented young racer is the Hooters Pro Cup Series event at Southern National Raceway in Kenly, NC, on Saturday, July 19th. Atlanta Motor Speedway is striding into summer with one of the track’s busiest and most exciting weeks of the year that includes Hollywood celebrities at Thursday Thunder, Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue racing at Friday Night Drags, and the DukesFest and Hazzard County Fair in a four-day span. Week four of Thursday Thunder will feature two Hollywood celebrities competing in Legends cars. John Schneider, famous for his role as Bo Duke in the Dukes of Hazzard, will compete with his good friend, Scott Elrod, who stars as Cash in the current hit ABC series, Men in Trees, in the Chargers division, a class for novice racers. In addition, the event will feature a ‘General Lee’ replica showcase, nine feature races, and the evening is themed Hillbilly Night, so fans are encouraged to dress up as their favorite Dukes character. The second points week of Friday Night Drags, presented by ACDelco, will feature an evening-opening drag race between Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue and Atlanta Motor Speedway president Ed Clark. “I am excited to participate in Friday night’s drag race against my friend Ed Clark,” said Governor Sonny Perdue. “Atlanta Motor Speedway continues to serve as a key asset to the state and for race fans new and old. Friday Night Drags is a great setting for people to safely race on the track and not on our public roads.” The 10th annual DukesFest and Hazzard County Fair is set to launch at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Saturday and Sunday, June 28-29, with appearances and autograph sessions with show cast members including the Duke boys, Daisy Duke, Cooter, and more. The event celebrates the 30th anniversary of the hit 1980’s television show. www.DukesFest.com. www.AtlantaMotorSpeedway.com

On a night to remember, it just couldn't have been bigger. In what was a storybook finish to a dream come true, Jeremy Scott from Franklin, GA, battled his way to victory lane in the 1st Annual O'Reilly United Sprint Car Series Randy Helton Memorial Race at East Alabama Motor Speedway on Saturday night. It was Scott's first-ever career feature win in the series he has participated in since 1998. The night's events commemorated Scott's close friend Randy Helton and Scott's own Father Randy Scott, who both passed away suddenly since the end of March. The two former USCS racers (Helton and Scott), must have been riding with the younger Scott who is always competitive, but, drove the "race of a lifetime" to best several of the Nation's top winged 360 sprint car drivers. A special commerative 8-lap dash race, the Randy Scott Memorial Dash was contested to remember the former USCS driver who raced for half a decade with the series and then spent the last five seasons supporting son Jeremy Scott's efforts. The Randy Scott Memorial Dash was won by veteran USCS driver Brian Thomas from Commerce, Georgia. < Randy Helton Memorial Race results (27 laps): 1 - 76 Jeremy Scott, Franklin, GA 2 - 10 Terry Gray, Bartlett, TN 3 - 26 Marshall Skinner, West Memphis, AR 4 - 9jr. The New 311 Motorspeedway, a 43-acre dirt track that has been drawing race fans to Stokes County on Saturday nights for decades, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection but intends to stay open. “The Daytona of Dirt” is the track’s motto, and it’s near Winston-Salem and Greensboro, NC. Detailed financial records have not yet been filed with the court, but documents indicate the track has between $100,000 and $1 million in liabilities and between $10,000 and $100,000 in assets. The track's holding company, 311 Holding Co. Inc., also filed for bankruptcy but no financial data was available. The track's co-owner and promoter, former driver Bobby Johns, said business at the track has not been as strong as he expected when he and his partner bought the facility in October 2005. Johns said that a good night at the track currently draws between 1,500 and 2,000. The grandstand and pits can hold as many as 7,000 people, he said, and he needs consistent attendance between 3,000 and 4,000 to make the numbers work. (by Matt Evans, The Business Journal)
Ronnie Johnson, of Chattanooga, led wire-to-wire to become the first two-time NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series winner this season at North Alabama Speedway. Johnson took his eighth career NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series win by six car lengths over William Thomas, of Phenix City, AL. Frank Ingram, of Woodstock, was fifth. Point leader Chip Brindle, of Chatsworth, had to start 23rd with a provisional and finished 12th.
Comfortable temps combined with growing crowds and car counts made for another great night at Boyds this past Friday. While the track did not stay as tacky as it had the previous three weeks and pileups and spins at times took their toll, the drivers still managed to put on the kind of show expected at Boyd’s with plenty of two and three wide racing. The Crate Late Models, in a complete reversal from last week, put on what was arguably the best show of the evening. Chris Beavers would start on the pole and battle for five laps with Jamie Perry until Perry’s car broke on lap five. This set up a three way battle between Beavers, Robert Stutts, and Randy Hill, till Hill spun as the white flag was being displayed. With Hill in the back, it was Beavers winning the green/white together drag race with Curtis Cline finishing third. A huge crash in turn four would take out several Steel head Late Models out of the 20-car field before the feature scored the first lap. Kayne Hickman took the lead from pole sitter Brian Pritchard on lap nine and proceed to check out, winning by better than a half lap margin over runner-up Pritchard. John Burger rounded out the top three. The main Front Runner event saw the first rollover at the new Boyds as Kenny Adams hung on to his number 19 as it rolled in turn two coming to a rest on the drivers side. Adams was out of the car and sitting on the track against the wall by the time rescue workers arrived and appeared to be unhurt. This coming Friday , June 28th, The Advance Auto Parts Thunder Series makes their first appearance at Boyds with a $4000.00 to win Super Late Model event. Thanks to Steve Milling, Boyd’s Speedway Track Announcer
