GEORGIA STOCK CAR RACING June 12-19, 2008

The internet rumor mill roared this week with a story that two partners (incl. a former track announcer) were buying Lavonia Speedway, which has been for sale since last fall. A price of $600,000 was mentioned. Brad York has leased the track this year, and has had some successes.
Lanier Speedway owner Donnie Clack also owns Lavonia, and he said this week that several groups have looked at the track, but no offer and no deposit has been received.
Lavonia hosts the Carolina Clash super LM tour Friday.

Biggest show in the area this weekend, and the only one being taped by SPEED TV, is at the Talladega Short Track which hosts the Lucas Oil Dirt Late Model Series Sat. night. It pays $10,000 to win.
All of the Top Ten in series points are expected:
2008 Points Standings (after 17 races):
1 Earl Pearson Jr.
2 Steve Casebolt -55
3 Bart Hartman -245
4 Justin Rattliff -255
5 Scott James -360
6 Dan Schlieper -360
7 Billy Drake -520
8 Terry Casey -525
9 Wayne Chinn -670
10 Freddy Smith -835
Jimmy Owens won their last race at Florence, KY. TST’s show is the Lucas Series’ last area appearance until the Rome Rumble Oct. 3 and the Dixie Shootout Oct. 4.
WoO driver Clint Smith has TST on his webpage schedule, and Shane Clanton may too.
The track would like to introduce more fans to dirt kart racing on their 1/6th mile track, which has races every Friday night. Admission is free, and they’ll have 50 cent hot dogs and bike races for the kids this week.
Next week on their bigger track, it’s Fan Appreciation Night with $5 adm.
Thurs. (June 12) at 5:00 p.m., the “Lucas Oil Motorsports Hour” on VERSUS shows the 2nd Annual SuperClean Diamond Nationals from Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, MO, which paid $40,000 to win.

The Carolina Clash Super Late Model Series will be back in action this weekend with a pair of $4,000 to win main events. Friday night's show will be at Lavonia Speedway, with Saturday night's event the '2nd Annual Wild West Shootout' at Tri-County Racetrack in Brasstown, NC.
Tim Allen thrilled his home track fans Friday night at Carolina Speedway by pulling a huge upset over a strong Carolina Clash Super Late Model Series field to collect his first career Clash win and the $4,000 that came along with it. “Thank you, Jesus!” exclaimed an elated yet humble Allen from victory lane.

The Stars and Cars of the Carolina "Bad Boys" known as the Carolina Clash will invade the Lavonia Speedway Friday Night June 13. Dennis "Rambo" Franklin scored the last Carolina Clash win at Lavonia in 2003, and has had very good success here ever since. The Lavonia Speedway has set it's goal to have the Super Latemodel Feature lined up and on the Speedway ready to start by 10:30 pm.
Clash Super Latemodels will qualify, with the top 12 qualifiers locked into the feature event. Two six lap dashes will be ran to determine the line up for the top 12 qualifiers. Consi races will set the remainder of the field.

Ivedent Lloyd captured the 2007 O’Reilly Southern All Stars crown with consistency and persistence. But in doing so Lloyd was unable to put his machine into victory lane on the grueling 29 race / 10 month schedule. At the years end Lloyd remarked that he just needed to win a race to feel like he had accomplished his goals. After Saturday night’s NASCAR Family Night June Bug 60 at Mountain Raceway Park in Maryville, Tennessee Lloyd made his final goal a reality.
Lloyd took the Sunoco Race Fuels Pole Award as well, besting the other thirty drivers that attempted qualifying. Lloyd’s 15.60 second lap set a new track record
“Well I guess we made the right decision coming back.” Lloyd commented referring to the decision to leave the $100,000 Dream at Eldora Speedway in favor of the O’Reilly Southern All Star event at Mountain Raceway Park. “We provided a car for David Reuttiman for the Prelude and figured we would try to qualify and see what happened. The OSAS rules allow us to drop our three worst finishes so we thought if we could qualify well, we would stick around and try to get in. We have always qualified very well at Eldora so we were optimistic. But we got a bad draw both times and had two terrible laps. So here we are.” Lloyd said.
The Southern All Stars have had nine different winners in ten shows this year.
June Bug 60 Official Finish:
1 – 21 Ivedent Lloyd (1) – Ocala, FL
2 – 4 Mark Vineyard (16) – Powell, TN
3 – 201 Billy Ogle, Jr. (14) – Knoxville, TN
4 – 2x Anthony White (4) – Clinton, TN
5 – c5 David Crabtree (6) – Maryville, TN
9 – 99 Derek Ellis (23) – Chatsworth, GA
18 – 10H Anthony Hill (20) – Carrollton, GA
Next OSAS Event: June 20-21 – Lucas Oil Speedway – Wheatland, MO
(this is a co-sanctioned event, paying $10,000 to win, but not an OSAS points race) www.lucasoilspeedway.com

Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 13, 14 & 15, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.: The Goodguys 2nd Southern Nationals Car Show, an outdoor event featuring hot rods, custom cars, classics, muscle cars and trucks through 1972 vintage, will fill the entire infield of Atlanta Motor Speedway with over 1,000 cars, vendor exhibits, an autocross competition (road course to test vehicle performance), an automotive swap meet, cars for sale corral, special themed parking areas and much more! The event will also feature a Saturday evening night track cruse around AMS as well as NASCAR rental rides from the Richard Petty Driving Experience. www.good-guys.com

Why tracks are closing: Trackchaser Ed Esser reports from Mountain Motor Speedway in KY: “About 250 people were gathered for a small field of 11
limited late models, 6 open wheels, 4 bombers, 5 outlaw 4-cylinders
and 7 stock 4-cylinders. The official timer went to Eldora this week
so they drew for position tonight. This is Kentucky so don’t plan on
an early start or end! The grader came out at 7PM and they watered
just before 8PM. After a pit meeting they packed the track at 9PM and
the first race was out by 9:45PM. The track was hard and smooth and
got dusty for the last features ... The late models had a spin fest to
conclude the night with 4 cars completing the 20-lap feature. Ten
yellows slowed the event as Raymond Nichols was a winner from the
pole.” This was Esser’s track number 1102.

Why tracks are closing (part two): Trackchaser Guy Smith reports from Sunny South Raceway:
“... we drove to Alabama to Sunny South Raceway...Admission was $10...It is a very nice little track, but the show is lousy because they have very few cars and it is poorly run...They had seven divisions and the highest car count was eight cars, with an average of five ... Yet even with few cars they still had to run time trials and heats, and took up two and a quarter hours qualifying for features they all made anyway...And after that they had intermission for three classes of kids bike races, this with seven features to follow, and four of them were fifty lappers...One of the oddest refreshment stand items ever was frozen pickle juice...That's just foul.”

In 2007, Casey Smith, from Austin, TX, won all four Super LM Viper Series races at South Alabama Speedway (in Opp), and he won the first 2008 Viper race. Four times he was also the fast qualifier. The track has placed a big ad in Late Model Digest, offering a $500 reward for anyone who can beat Smith at the Viper race June 21 (which pays $5000 to win). Smith’s winnings at Opp total nearly $40,000. He also was the Mobile Intl. Speedway LM Champion in 2007. http://www.latemodeldigest.net http://casey.stellasoftware.com/default.php

Saturday, at Duck River Speedway, a quarter-mile dirt track in Wheel, TN, an angry driver drove into the pits, did two donuts, and injured two seriously. There are reports on the track forum that beer was being opnly consumed in the pits. The driver has been arrested. The track’s biggest show, the Lucas Oil LM Series, is at the track this week. http://www.duckriverspeedway.com

Trevor Sanborn won the 150-lap Orange County (NC) Speedway PASS South Super Late Model event. Jason Hogan, of Cleveland, GA, crossed the line second with Jeff Fultz, Ben Rowe and John Stancill rounding out the top five. Hogan started eighth, took the lead on lap 12, and led 40 laps. from http://www.speed51.com

Bubba Pollard’s GA Asphalt Series victory at Watermelon Capital Speedway was a true test of his driving ability. “It feels really good to win with a car that was as loose as ours was,” said Pollard. “We got into another car on lap 30 and the car was so loose and free that we were going to come in to pit to work on it. I looked up and saw they were giving one to go, so I dialed some more front brake into it and decided to work with what we had.” A few laps later, the car came right to Pollard and he marched to the front, making a pass for the lead with only five laps reaming.
The Watermelon Capital triumph was his third win this season in 12 starts. He also has seven top-five finishes along the way in several different series.
Pollard will be back in action on Sat. at New Senoia Speedway.www.bubbapollard.net
The air temperature in Cordele was 103 on Saturday. Ryan Seig, of Decatur, started on the pole after the roll of the dice. Sieg, in his S&W Towing racer, jumped out into the lead and seemed to be the car to beat. On lap 194 "I developed a vapor lock i... and I couldn't keep him behind me," said Sieg. "He obviously had the car to beat."
Rounding out the top five were Joey Senter of Jefferson, Wes Burton of Kannapolis, NC, and Russell Fleeman of Dacula, recovering from a flip a week earlier.
Rookies Max Gresham, of Griffin, finished 7th and T.J. Reaid, of Acworth, finished 9th.
The next race for the GAS Series is Saturday (June 14) at New Senoia Raceway. The track is located between I-85 & I-75 on Georgia Hwy 16, three miles west of Senoia.

The National Vintage Racing Association is exploring the option of staging its first vintage drag race, with a goal of recreating the atmosphere of drag racing in the 1960s before computerized timing and unlimited funding.
The NVRA plans to admit cars that raced prior to 1972 with the desired classes being nostalgic funny car, fuel altered, slingshot dragster, straight axle-factory experimental, open-wheel flathead and six cylinder, pro stock and super stock.
Anyone with either interest or questions can contact Richard Stafford at 474-2246.
The NVRA's Vintage Thunder Series races Saturday at the Watermelon Capital Speedway in Cordele on June 21.

Internet reports from Boyd’s Speedway: Congratulations to youngster Robert Stutts for winning the first Crate Late Model feature at the "new" Boyd's Speedway. It was Stutts' fourth feature win of the season, and 10th top 2 finish in his last 11 starts. Darel Ownbey, of Calhoun, finished second followed by Ringgold's Jamie Perry in third. Also congratulations should go out to the management of Boyd's, as the program kept moving, the stands were nearly full, and the hamburgers were great!

More: With standing room only, they were treaded with some of the best racing in the area in a long time. Like last week the racing surface was as good as any I have ever seen. Everyone was able to choose from a multiple groove and smooth track to race on. ... In the Limited Late Model is was Kayne Hickman winning, but not without a hard fought battle from Rick Hixson. With a late yellow for a stalled Jerry Coffman (last weeks winner) it set up a dash to the finish with Hickman and Hixson. Hickman was able to finish what he had started followed by Rick Hixson.

More: may be the best concession stand I've every seen at a race track. Great service and Great Food, Wow What a hamburger! Great job by all, racing was over by 10:45 for the second week in a row!

The 1st Annual Randy Helton Memorial race, with the USCS winged sprint cars, is Saturday, June 21, at East Alabama Motor Speedway. The high-banked speed plant, located seven miles West of Phenix City, AL, on US Highway 80 West, was the late O'Reilly United Sprint Car Series driver's favorite race track.
The race commemorates the late Randy Helton, from Palmetto, GA, passed away on March 30, at age 47. Helton raced regularly with the series for the last decade. Prior to starting his own career as a racer Helton was also the crew chief for several seasons for O'Reilly United Sprint Car Series Founder and President, Pete Walton.
Helton started as a rookie driver with the O'Reilly USCS during the 1998 season after purchasing a former Frankie Kerr piloted and Stan Shoff owned J & J Auto Racing car.
The event itself will offer several special awards including commemorative trophies and plaques. The race will also feature another special race, the Randy Scott Memory Dash memorializing retired USCS driver Randy Scott, 60, from Franklin, GA, who passed away on April.27, 2008. Scott, who raced as part of a two car team with his son, Jeremy Scott for several years in the series. Scott retired as a driver four seasons ago to help his son better concentrate on his racing efforts. Jeremy Scott, also from Franklin, GA, will compete.
The Randy Helton Memorial Race is part of a winged sprint car double-header weekend for the series that begins on Friday, June 20th at Penton (AL) Raceway.

Scott Bloomquist , from Mooresburg, Tenn., registered a record fifth career victory in the UMP DIRTcar-sanctioned Dirt Late Model Dream XIV at Eldora Speedway on Saturday night, turning back a late bid by Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine, Iowa, to pocket the race’s $100,000 top prize – the division’s biggest single-race paycheck in 2008.
Bloomquist, 44, was never headed after charging forward from the ninth starting spot to take the lead from Shane Clanton, of Locust Grove, Ga., on lap 24 of the 100-lap A-Main. Clanton, who led laps 4-23 after starting sixth, slipped back to finish a distant third in a brand-new RSD Enterprises Rocket, and Jimmy Owens of Newport, Tenn., came from the 13th starting spot to challenge Clanton late in the distance before placing fourth in the Reece Monuments Bloomquist chassis
Clanton, who set fast time in Friday night’s 122-car qualifying session with a lap of 16.580 seconds and raced to a Saturday heat win from the fifth starting spot, proved to be no match for Bloomquist. Clanton earned $10,000 for a career-best Dream finish of third.

Cody Barnett, of Ringgold, was fast qualifier Sat. in a field of 13 super LMs at Cleveland, but fell to ninth in the feature, won by Randy Burrows, of Chattanooga.
