Andrew Smith wins 11th in a row at The 'Melon
|
Among the topics posted on the Watermelon Capital Speedway discussion forum this week was, “One question that a lot of people have been asking is can anyone stop Andrew Smith. He has won 10 in a row at the melon and can he keep that streak going?”
For this week, at least, the answers were “No” and “Yes”.
After winning his tenth straight victory on April 12 at the Watermelon Capital Speedway, the 20-year old driver from Pooler, Georgia was faced with the daunting task of having to start at the rear of the field due to a new track rule of “win one week, start in the rear the next.” Eleven other competitors were on hand to start ahead of Andrew and try and stop him from finding his way to victory lane yet again.
Starting from the rear of the 1st 6-lap heat race, Andrew battled his way through half the field and came out with a 3rd place finish. That wouldn’t matter, however, since Andrew would be forced to start in the rear of the feature.
Andrew had a clear view of the entire field ahead of him as he took the green flag. By the time lap 2 was completed, five of the competitors had a view of the Clay Hair Motorsports decal on the rear of the white #62. Andrew continued his march through the pack and on lap 7 of the 20-lap event he took the lead for good. A late race caution bunched the field back up, but it was evident that the evening belonged to Andrew as he led the field to the checkered flag for the eleventh time in as many races.
“There were some really fast cars here tonight”, said Andrew, “but I thought that if we could get through the traffic clean, we had a good shot at it.”
Andrew and the team will take a break from Legends racing on April 26 – 27 as they go SCCA road racing in the Andrew Smith Racing Monte Carlo Late Model at the Roebling Road Raceway in Bloomingdale, Georgia.

Andrew Smith competes regularly in the Pro Division of the INEX RaceCeiver Legends Car Series as a member of Clay Hair Motorsports and in select SCCA and NASA road course races in the ASR Monte Carlo Late Model.
