AMS has been a regular stop for the GAS Series over the past three years. Late Model drivers from throughout the Southeast will converge on the 3/8 mile oval. Anderson Motor Speedway's wide straightaways and tight, tricky corners are infamous for producing close, competitive short track racing. AMS is truly a drivers track. AMS is located off of Interstate 85 at Exit 27, then go north on SC 81. Racing at 8 PM.
Defending series champion Russell Fleeman had the fastest qualifying time, and led the first 47 laps in the GAS 100 at Peach State, but then sparks came from under his car and he had a flat tire. Luckily for Fleeman, as he drew the yellow flag, two cars crashed on the front stretch producing a long yellow flag period. This allowed Fleeman's crew time to find and replaced the damaged left front parts, and put on the two allowed tires. Bubba Pollard, the #2 qualifier, took the lead on the restart, as Fleeman charged from the rear of the 28 car field. With about 10 laps left, Fleeman was into the top five, and gaining - all without benefit of a single yellow flag. Pollard was nearly as fast as Fleeman, and was nearly a straight-away ahead at the end. Unofficial results: 1 - Pollard 2 - Fleeman 3 - Wes Burton 4 - Richard Johns 5 - Max Gresham
In the support classes at Peach State, all three winners were DQ'd: 1 - refused to tear down 1 - was claimed, and refused 1 - had something bad Peach State Speedway local division recap: < Outlaw Late Models Hoyt Stephens held off Russell Shore to win the 35 lap Outlaw Late Model feature. Paul Antley took the checked flag, but was disqualified after failing the post race inspection. Second place went to Andy Gaddis followed Matthew Rouse and James Davidson. < Sportsman Robbie Gonterman was the man to beat in the 25 lap Sportsman feature. Gonterman checked out on the field. Following Whitfield were Richard King, Keith Barrett and Chuck Copper. William Earnest inherited the win in the 20 lap Mini Stock feature. Troy French took the checkered flag, but was disqualified after failing the post race inspection. Following Earnest were Ken Candiotti, Aaron Calvert and Wayne Smith. There was a hard crash during the Mini Stock feature race when David Cochran erupted an engine coming out of turn four and came to a stop on the front straightaway. Due to the extremely heavy smoke, Darrell Carlson plowed into the back of Cochran's stalled car. Both cars were destroyed in the accident. Neither driver was injured.

Billy Moyer thrilled a record crowd to win Saturday night’s inaugural World of Outlaws Late Model Series ‘Illini 100’ at Farmer City Raceway. The 50-year-old dirt-track legend from Batesville, Ark., pocketed $20,150 – the biggest dirt Late Model prize ever paid out in the state of Illinois – for capturing a wildly competitive event that featured eight lead changes among five drivers and was in doubt until the checkered flag. After spending a mid-week day testing his swing-arm car at his sponsor Don Cliburn’s Jackson (Miss.) Speedway (along with Eckert and Fuller), Clint Smith, from Senoia, was primed and ready for the ‘Illini 100.’ But he struggled in the A-Main, spinning on the homestretch on lap 26 and finishing one lap down in 14th. Shane Clanton, of Locust Grove, spent most of the distance as a fringe top-five runner, but he faded to 11th at the finish after an apparent sealed right-rear tire hampered him in the closing laps. For more information on the WoO LMS, visit www.worldofoutlaws.com. “It had a hole or two in the track, but heck, it’s springtime,” said Moyer, who credited Farmer City promoter Don Hammer with doing “a good job” on the surface. “Myself, I think every track should have a bump or two. It doesn’t bother me any. It gives you something to do.” Results of WoO Late Model Series ‘Illini 100’: 1. (3) Billy Moyer/100 $20,150 2. (19) Shannon Babb/100 $10,100 3. (1) Steve Francis/100 $6,000 4. (20) Tim McCreadie/100 $5,000 5. (17) Wes Steidinger/100 $4,500 6. (6) Josh Richards/100 $3,000 7. (12) Rick Eckert/100 $2,750 8. (23) Darrell Lanigan/100 $2,500 9. Mason Massey raced his Bandolero at the Indianapolis Speedrome April 5th and 6th. This is the site of the 2008 Bandolero Nationals in September. He had a great weekend. Each day he set fast time in qualifying and won both feature events. On Sunday, he broke the track record in qualifying at the 67 year old facility!! It was a great weekend for all of us, as Dad got to celebrate his 40th birthday in victory lane with Mason.
Friday Night Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola opens the 2008 Season for Super Late Models with Blizzard Series Race #1, The " Amp Energy Drink 100". A large field of cars for this event is anticipated, with drivers from at least 8 states. Defending Snowball Derby Champion Augie Grill will be on hand as well as several former Derby winners including Wayne Anderson and Pensacola's own Eddie Mercer. Add in first time Five Flags competitor Dennis Schoenfeld from North Carolina, Joe Gibbs development driver Joey Logano, and Oklahoma's Donnie Wilson, just to name a few, and the action surely will make for a great night of racing entertainment.
PROMOTERS: Nice idea from Five Flags in Pensacola and Tim Bryant: a three-tiered podium for the winners’ pictures - and it’s not placed on the front stretch, delaying the next race.
Early Sunday morning, a large caravan of white-and-orange clad race fans could be seen traveling the 65-mile stretch of Interstate 75 between Macon and Cordele, Georgia. The large contingent of fans of Late Model standout Beau Slocumb took their place in the grandstands near the start-finish line at Watermelon Capital Speedway for the running of the RC Cola / MoonPie ASA Southeast Asphalt Tour event that had been postponed from the day before due to rain. Those Slocumb fans and supporters would eventually make the return trip to Macon with smiles on their faces. The 23-year-old Macon resident started fourth, made a daring move around fast-qualifier and early-dominator Jay Middleton, and then held off Middleton through several late-race restarts to win Sunday’s Watermelon 100 at Watermelon Capital Speedway, the second event of the 2008 RC / MoonPie ASA Southeast Asphalt Tour. “It’s awesome,” said Slocumb, who won in front of the TV cameras which will televise the event on a tape-delayed basis. “I’ve got a huge family and a huge group from my church, and they are all here tonight. That makes it even more special to do it in front of them. Behind Slocumb and Middleton, Michael Pope took home third, his second-straight podium finish after a runner-up finish at Mobile in the opening ASA SAT event. “I feel really good about the car and the team,” said Pope. “I really appreciate all the hard work that they put in this week. During the race, the car started off pretty good, but at the end it started getting tight. We had been running side-by-side with the #40 car (Taylor Satterfield) and it just started shoving the nose coming off the corner. That didn’t help any when I was trying to hunt down Beau and Jay. But, all in all, we had a good run tonight.” Jess Mattox and Taylor Satterfield rounded out the top-five in the Watermelon 100. Fans will be able to catch the action from the Watermelon 100 RC / MoonPie ASA Southeast Asphalt Tour on SportSouth Wed., May 7, 8:00 p.m., and other major networks across the country. James used a unique line around the track, running high through turns one, two and three, and then driving off the bottom of turn four to cover the inside where Owens was the strongest. Owens had to settle for second, and Dohm took the third spot. Randy Weaver of Crossville, TN, was fourth, and Donnie Moran of Dresden, OH, rounded out the top five. Track chaser Randy Lewis reports from Swainsboro: “Once back at the track, we were just in time for hot laps. Hot laps are essentially practice. Time trials followed the hot laps. Each late model was given one lap to qualify. They normally get two but they were trying to beat the potential bad weather. The 40+ stock car finished time trials in about 30 minutes. “From there we saw four Lucas Oil heat races, two “B” mains and then the “A” main feature. There was only one support division, a local late model group. Surprisingly, something happened that I cannot ever recall happening. The track ran the complete Lucas Oil Late Model show before they ran any of the local late model races. Good for them! Most of the fans came to see the “big boys”. By running the Lucas Oil series first, fans could “get on down the road” after the Lucas Oil races were run or stay to watch the locals if they wanted. That’s so much better than holding the traveling fan “hostage” while the local classes wear out the track and the fan’s posterior. “The Swainsboro track is a first class facility. I was surprised to learn they have been racing down here for 40 years. The track was a red clay 3/8-mile oval. Cars were pitted beyond turns three and four giving the fans a great view of all of the racing action. “The crowd wasn’t very large. I don’t know how these shows can make money with a crowd of 500 or so in the stands and a first place purse of $7,000. The race program had one other glaring error. It was impossible to hear the track’s P.A. system. This is really inexcusable for a show of this caliber and from a track of this quality. “The racing was very good. There was a good deal of passing and some minor inverted starts. Scott Bloomquist was caught up in a wreck not of his doing during the heat race and never reappeared. Terry Casey from up Wisconsin way blew everyone’s doors off getting fast time, winning his heat and then the $7,000 to win feature event. I had never heard of him, but he definitely made an impression. “The track got a little dusty at the end but my purchase of some racing goggles at the track made everything good. I listened to both the track’s radio channel on my race scanner as well as the “raceceiver” channel (454.000). This channel is used for the race organizers to talk to the drivers during the race. This really speeds up the show when the drivers can be told over the radio where to line up. “All in all, some very good racing. If I had my choice, I wish trackchasing could consistently offer race programs like this one. Alas, I know the hobby cannot. I’m O.K. with that.”
The Major League of Monster Trucks (MLMT) and the Atlanta Motor Speedway announced today the rescheduling of its event from May 3 to Sunday, July 6. The rescheduling was required because of the lack of time available to schedule production trucks and television crews to cover the original May 3 event at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. Tickets are available now through the atlantamotorspeedway.com
New photos taken April 3 showing the construction progress at Boyd's are now posted on the gallery page at www.boydsspeedway.com. Construction is well under way on an extension to the back of the control tower building that will double the size of the mens restroom, triple the size of the ladies restroom, and include a new ticket booth/souvenir stand on the bottom floor and a new kitchen facility on the top. The grandstand extensions are slated to begin construction tomorrow. The scales, decorated in their new checkered flag motif, are now installed under the scalehouse waiting for the controls and displays to be installed. The grandstand parking area is being graded and made ready for fresh gravel. Due to the above normal rainfall in the area, application of the new clay racing surface has been delayed, forcing the postponement of the targeted starting date kof April 18th for at least a couple of weeks.
