Commentary
(from one of the most knowledgeable female race fans I know. Her capital letters shows anger, I think):

I HAVE ALWAYS THOUGHT OF MONTY MORROW AS A GOOD TRACK PROMOTER; HOWEVER, AFTER TODAY, MARCH 28, 2008, I HAVE A DIFFERENT OPINION.
I JUST SAT AT NORTH GEORGIA FOR OVER FOUR AND HALF HOURS. I SAT DURING THE FEW SHOWERS THAT FELL ON THE TRACK. HOWEVER, THERE WERE MANY HOURS TO PREPARE THE TRACK. THE ANNOUNCER KEPT SAYING, “THE RADAR IS CLEAR, WE ARE GOING TO GET THIS RACE IN, COME VISIT THE CONCESSION STAND."
I WATCHED WHILE ONE, SOMETIMES TWO, CARS TRIED TO PACK THE TRACK; THEN EIGHT ATVS; NEXT AND FINALLY, SEVEN RACE CARS TRIED TO PACK THE TRACK. I HAVE BEEN TO MANY, MANY RACES INCLUDING THE ONE AT CLEVELAND LAST YEAR, WHERE THERE WAS MORE WATER ON THE TRACK AND THE RACE WAS STILL RUN.
WHAT I WITNESSED TONIGHT WAS A JOKE. THE RACE COULD HAVE BEEN RUN, IF A REAL EFFORT HAD BEEN PUT FORTH TO GET THE TRACK IN ORDER. I FEEL THAT MY FAMILY, ALONG WITH EVERYONE ELSE, INCLUDING DRIVERS, WAS ROBBED BY NORTH GEORGIA TONIGHT.
THE LEAST THE TRACK COULD HAVE DONE WAS ISSUE REFUNDS. I AND OTHER PEOPLE ATTEND CHURCH ON SUNDAY NIGHTS AND WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ATTEND THE MAKE-UP RACE. THEREFORE, MY FAMILY LOST $51.00 PLUS THE COST OF CONCESSIONS. NOT TO MENTION, THE FUEL AT $3.25 PER GALLON.
I UNDERSTAND VARIOUS TRACK POLICIES INCLUDING RAIN OUTS, BUT GOD HELD THE RAIN OFF. THIS RACE WAS NOT RAINED OUT. IF I AND EVERYONE ELSE WHO WAS STILL THERE HAD NOT WANTED TO WATCH THE RACE TONIGHT, WE WOULD HAVE LEFT, LIKE A FEW OTHERS DID INCLUDING DRIVERS. HOWEVER, I AM SURE THEY WANTED TO WATCH THE RACE TONIGHT OR THEY WOULD NOT HAVE SHOWED UP TONIGHT AND PAID MONEY. HOWEVER, SOME PEOPLE HAVE TO WORK ON SATURDAY MORNINGS.
I SPOKE TO A FAMILY OF THREE, WHO SAID,"THAT THEY HAD BEEN THERE BEFORE BUT HAD TO LEAVE BECAUSE AT 10:00 NO RACING HAD TAKEN PLACE." ONCE AGAIN THEY LEFT TONIGHT, BEFORE THE RACE WAS RESCHEDULED.
I HAVE BEEN TO RACES ALL OVER, AND BEFORE MONTY BECAME PROMOTER, ALL THE FANS TALKED ABOUT HOW BAD NORTH GEORGIA WAS FOR DRAGGING IT OUT ALL NIGHT LONG, AND HOW THEY HAVE TO LEAVE BEFORE THEY EVER WATCH A RACE. ALMOST EVERYONE I ASKED IF THEY WOULD BE AT NORTH GEORGIA (for the make-up announced for Sun.) REPLIED “NO”, BECAUSE IT TOOK UNTIL FOUR OR FIVE IN THE MORNING TO WATCH THE FEATURE.
TO MAKE MATTERS WORSE, I BROUGHT A FAMILY MEMBER TO SEE HER FIRST RACE, AND WHEN THE TRACK WAS RUNNING BEHIND SCHEDULE I CALLED FRIENDS, AND I TOLD THEM TO COME ON, THAT THE RACE HAD NOT BEGUN, AND THEY HAD PLENTY OF TIME TO MAKE IT.
THE ANNOUNCER SAID,"CALL YOUR FRIENDS, AND TELL THEM TO COME SUNDAY."
WELL, I CALLED MY FRIENDS, BUT THAT IS NOT WHAT I TOLD THEM. I AM THINKING THAT THIS IS MY LAST RACE AT NORTH GEORGIA, UNTIL IT GETS A NEW PROMOTER, AND I AM CONSIDERING NOT GOING TO CLEVELAND ANYMORE SINCE IT HAS THE SAME PROMOTER. WHAT IS TO SAY THAT THIS SAME INCIDENT WILL NOT HAPPEN AT CLEVELAND? RACE TRACKS CAN NOT KEEP TREATING THE FANS AND DRIVERS IN THIS MANNER.
LAST YEAR, SIMILAR THINGS HAPPENED AT ANOTHER TRACK IN BLUE RIDGE, GEORGIA. YOU CAN BET MONEY, I DID NOT GO BACK, AND I KNOW A LOT OF OTHER FANS WHO DID NOT GO BACK. I AM SURE YOU KNOW THAT THEY DID NOT EVEN FINISH THEIR SEASON AS PLANNED BECAUSE OF LACK OF ATTENDANCE.
ONE FINAL POINT: BEFORE THE ANNOUNCER SAID, “THE RACE HAD BEEN RESCHEDULED"; I RECEIVED A PHONE CALL FROM A CAR OWNER WHO SAID," THEY WILL NOT LET US PUT OUR CAR ON THE TRACK, THEY TOLD US TO LOAD IT."

North Georgia promoter Monty Morrow was contacted via phone Monday, and asked about refunds, and tickets will be honored at upcoming races. If the tickets are used at a lower priced show, the difference will be refunded. When asked for further clarification, Morrow hung up. He did not return addl. calls.

Preston Peltier won the new series’ first show at Mobile Mar. 22, with Dublin, GA, youngster Michael Pope second in a field of 36 cars. There were 10 yellows in 100 laps.
The series allows several types of engines, but fast time, the winner, and the top 13 all had crate motors at Mobile.
Peltier’s car had 50 pounds added, due to some body aero tricks.
The series is at Senoia May 31. www.asasoutheast.com

Cochran reports: OPENING NIGHT HAS BEEN CHANGED. WE WILL MOVE THE SEASON OPENER TO SATURDAY, APRIL 5TH.

Leading trackchaser Randy Lewis was in the area last week, and has posted his pictures and reports on visits to Hartwell and Lavonia at www.ranlayracing.com
A few highlights:
“It was now 9:30 p.m. We had been on the property (Hartwell Speedway) for two hours. Then the track decided it was time for late model time trials. I love the South and I love southerners. However, my blood pressure goes off the charts when any track tries to run time trials this late in the evening. For the most part it only happens in the south ...
“The promoter at Lavonia had stated on the track’s website that the program would be run in a timely manner. Apparently, the Lavonia Speedway has had a recent history of tardy shows and a dusty track. I would have to say they failed in their attempt to complete the program in a timely fashion.
“... I believe my expectations as a race fan are fairly minimal. I expect a track to begin their program at a reasonable hour within 15 minutes of the advertised start time weather permitting. I want to see more green flag laps than yellow flag laps. I want to be able to hear the P.A. and listen to an entertaining and informative announcer. It would be nice to have some control over the dust and some decent food. While we’re asking for the moon, how about some inverted starts and decent parking.”

Michael Ritch took the lead from Trevor Bayne on Lap 146 and held off a slew of contenders to win the BFGoodrichTires.com 250 presented by K&N Performance Filters at South Georgia Motorsports Park on Saturday. The win was Ritch’s 14th in his Hooters Pro Cup career and first of the season.
“This is great, especially since we’re looking for a sponsor,” said Ritch, who took home $11,500 for his win.
Dusty Williams, of Rincon, GA, driver of the No. 40s Dustcom LTD Ford, posted his career-best finish by coming home fourth.
“I wanted to finish third, but I’m very honored and happy to finish fourth,” said Williams. “I try to mimic Bobby Gill. He might not qualify that great, but he always puts that car in a position to win or contend for a win by keeping his nose clean. I’ve been watching him a lot in practice; he doesn’t know it. I figured he’s the King of Pro Cup, so he must know what he’s doing.”
Matt Hawkins, of Canton, has been hot since the end of last season, but he was hot under the collar after the BFGoodrichTires.com 250. Despite leaving South Georgia Motorsports Park with the points lead, Hawkins wasn’t too enthused with his seventh-place finish.
“There wasn’t much positive about tonight,” said Hawkins, driver of the No. 2s JaniKing Ford. “We should’ve run second and maybe had a chance at catching Ritch. I had Bobby about passed a couple of times. We shouldn’t have been that far back. I ran the stop light at the end of pit road and had to start at the back, then I drilled the wall and knocked the left rear over big time.

Randy Helton, a.k.a. "The Big Dog", died at his home Sunday of an apparent heart attack. Helton raced two events with the ASCS Rebel Region winged sprint cars during 2007 with a 10th and 3rd place finish.
Known to all for his quick smile and hardy laugh, Helton, originally from Memphis, TN,, had made Atlanta home for himself and his family. He was the owner of Helton Transmissions of Union City, GA, for a number of years. Randy is survived by wife Vickie, son Matt, and brother Jeff. He was 47.
In 2007, he was fourth in the O'Reilly USCS Southern Thunder Tour points.

Speed51.com reports: NASCAR Sprint Cup driver David Ragan will be testing his Super Late Model at Watermelon Capital Speedway in preparation for the April 26th PASS South event there. With the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series racing at the nearby Talladega Superspeedway that weekend, it is likely that Ragan will enter the PASS event.
Ragan will also team up with the Roulo Brothers to compete in the May 18 ARCA RE/MAX Series race at Toledo Speedway and the October 12th ARCA Championship Weekend festivities. Ragan’s relationship with the Roulo Bros. dates back to the Spring of 2004 with an outside pole at Salem Speedway. He finished fourth in the ARCA 200 at Daytona in a Roulo Bros. entry in 2007.

Clint Smith, of Senoia, Ga., who won all four of his 2007 WoO LMS A-Mains at tracks in the Midwest and finished fifth in the Farmer City event, is hoping a return to the region helps him reclaim his ’07 form. He enters the Farmer City ‘Illini 100’ ranked ninth in the points standings after a forgettable outing in Mississippi – an unusual position for a driver who never ranked lower than third in the 2007 points race after the season opener. America's newest indoor motorsports facility, the Amsoil Sandbox Arena at Cedar Lake (WI) Speedway, hosted a two-day Badger Midget Series event March 29-30. The 120,000 square foot facility opened in October 2007, and has hosted weekly motocross racing on the dirt motocross track. In mid-March, track officials replaced the motocross design with a clay oval measuring between 1/4-1/5-mile, and added walls and safety fencing for the event. The facility currently seats approximately 4,000 spectators.
Their outdoor dirt track, 50 miles east of Minneapolis, annually hosts the $50,000 to win USA Nationals (Aug. 1-2) for late models, the WoO sprint cars (June 29), and school bus racing (May 17).

The National Late Model Series thundered into Waycross Motor Speedway on Saturday for a $4,000.00-to-win feature event. Fuel and tires were subjected to extra checks just to keep everyone honest and to squelch the rumors.
Dusty Cone was the Optima Trailers Fastest Qualifier. Jimmy Lee Davis took the lead immediately in the feature, and never gave anyone a shot at him. Further back in the field, Mark Whitener slowly and surely worked his way closer to the front – earning a third place finish. Toby Justice tried hard to climb through the field, but early problems left him sidelined for most of the race. Brandon DeWitt and Cale Simons also faced early problems and spent much of the race in their pits.
Next up, May 3, at the new Cochran Motor Speedway.
