When Matt Hawkins last left South Georgia Motorsports Park, the Canton, Ga., driver did so with the winner’s trophy. The win jumped Hawkins from 23rd to ninth in the standings and fueled his last-season chase at the championship.
But when Hawkins returns to the sight of his second Hooters Pro Cup win for the running of the BFGoodrichTires.com 250 presented by K&N Filters on Saturday, March 29, at 7:00 p.m., he will be the one that’s being chased.
Hawkins, driver of the No. 2s JaniKing Ford, finished second in the season-opening Southern Division event at USA Int’l Speedway on March 15, giving him the point lead heading into SGMP. And with his successes last season at the fast, half-mile track, Hawkins expects to leave with the lead.
"I think we’re going to be awesome at [South Georgia]," said Hawkins. "Having Mike Garvey as my crew chief is great. We should have won the Snowball Derby. But that’s three second-place finishes in a row for us and we won at SGMP before that; so we’ve been doing great. We just have to keep it going all season."
The BFGoodrichTires.com 250 is slated for a green flag at 7 p.m. on Sat. at SGMP. Awesome Awnings Pole Qualifying will start at 4:30 p.m. and be followed by the on-track autograph session at 5:45 p.m.
The event will air on VERSUS Network on Monday, April 7, at 4 p.m.

Commentary from 4m.net by “southern racer”
Went to Albany to for NLMS race. Racing was good except in the latter part of the race drivers started driving a little crazy and running over each other. They can't seem to understand that what goes around usually comes around.
With what it costs to race these days I don't understand why some drivers don't try to take better care of their equipment. If you hit another car, chances are real good that he will retaliate. Most of the guilty will blame either the track or Ray Miller for all the tore up sheet metal in the last half of the race, but, the truth is it is their own fault.
It is also hard to believe that there were only 17 cars there. All dirt late model racers in this area need to support this series. There have been mistakes made in the past but we need series like this to help keep our purses up and some promoters honest.
I don't mean to be Ray Miller's cheerleader, but, what I saw Sat. night leads me to believe that he is trying to get this series back to where it belongs. A strong viable NLMS can only help all of us.

Beginning with this weekend’s inaugural ‘March Through Dixie 100’ at Pike County Speedway in Magnolia, Miss., the World of Outlaws Late Model Series will embark full-bore on a 31-week, map-hopping odyssey to determine its 2008 champion.
And no stretch of the campaign will be more lucrative than the ensuing four weeks, which can easily be called the tour’s ‘Month of Money.’ With three high-dollar 100-lappers highlighting the upcoming springtime schedule, there’s a robust $110,000 in first-place cash on the line over the next five WoO LMS races.
“This is a great way for the World of Outlaws Late Model Series to dive into the busiest season we’ve ever had,” said tour director Tim Christman, alluding to the heart of a schedule that currently shows 47 confirmed events at 40 tracks in 22 states and three Canadian provinces.
The Month of Money:
Pike County Speedway, $20,000 to win Sat., March 29.

Six WoO LMS events in 2008 will be televised on SPEED, beginning with the Lernerville, PA, show taped June 28 and cablecast July 13.

Ryan Sieg, of Tucker, qualified 25th of 40 cars for the PASS South Easter Bunny at Hickory, NC, Speedway, and was second in Consi 2 to earn a spot in the feature, where he finished 17th. Full report at http://www.speed51.com/2008_Stories/PASS_South/EB_150_Trackside_Now.html

The newly formed late model team of Mitch Cobb/Bill Elliott Racing debuted last weekend in Hickory, NC, at the PASS South Easter Bunny 150. Behind the wheel of the #94 Ford Fusion for the first time in Super Late Model competition was 17-year-old Alabama native Mitch Cobb.
Over the past 4 months the team has been building two new GARC race cars, powered by Ernie Elliott built Ford engines, driven by Dan Elliott prepared transmissions, in the Bill Elliott Racing shop in Dawsonville. The team is led by crew chief Ricky Turner, the 2001 Snowball Derby Champion and Hooters Pro Cup series competitor. Recent testing at Lanier National Speedway, Nashville’s Music City Motorplex, and Hickory Motor Speedway, has given the team high hopes for the 2008 season as Cobb will compete across the eastern seaboard in select Super Late Model races during the year.
Testing has gone very well,” commented Turner. “Mitch has gotten up to speed quickly and that has helped us determine how to approach these first few races of the year.”
When asked about his hopes for the season, the quiet Cobb stated, “Top tens are a must, top fives would be great, but ultimately I have everything here to win my first race this year in a Late Model car.” He was 29th of 30 at Hickory.
Next is CRA’s All American 150 race at the Music City Motorplex in Nashville, TN, Mar. 29. www.mitchcobbracing.com

Steve Hixson’s National Dirt Late Model standings reports that Jimmy Owens has five wins in $10,000-or-more to win races in 2008, plus a second and a third. Billy Moyer has three wins, three seconds, and a third. Scott Bloomquist has two wins, and a second and a third so far. There have been 17 $10,000+ shows in 2008.
Owens will probably be at North Georgia and Cleveland this weekend, with Bloomquist at a Lucas Oil LM Series show in Indiana, and Moyer at the $20,000 WoO show in Pike County, MS.

Champion Racing Association is ready to start its 2008 season Saturday with the 2008 Spring Clash event at the Music City Motorplex at the Fairgrounds in Nashville, TN. The event will include the All American 150 for the CRA Super Series late models, a 75-lap event for the O'Reilly USA Modified Series and a special-points 75-lap Shoot-out event between the CRA Street Stocks and the MCM Sportsman. The All American 150 will pay $5000 to win, but more importantly, the top three finishers will have a guaranteed start for the CRA sanctioned Adam Petty Memorial All American 400. 45 teams pre-entered to compete in the All American 150. Qualifying starts at 4pm. The race program will begin at 7pm on Saturday with last chance races first, then the three feature events.

Tony Stewart has climbed into the flagstand after many NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victories to celebrate - but on May 4th, Tony will be climbing into the flagstand for the first time to wave the green flag to start a major stock car race when 50 cars come roaring by to start the ARCA Carolina 500 at Rockingham Speedway.
