The 23rd Annual Jimmy Thomas Memorial is Friday and Saturday at East Alabama, and the featured Crate LM div. pays $10,000 to win for 100 laps. Sportsman racers will run 50 laps for $5000 to win. Last chance races start at 5:30 Sat., with features for Super Street, Hobby, Bomber, 4-Cylinder, Sportsman, and Crates to follow. This track is across the river from Columbus, GA. www.eamsdirt.com
Dale McDowell's double duty at Green Valley Speedway's 11th annual Bama Bash paid double time. The Rossville, Ga., driver earned $10,000 for dominating the Super Late Model feature and an additional $5,000 for dominating the crate engine Late Model feature at the 3/8-mile oval south of Gadsden. Starting third in both races, McDowell didn't take long getting to the front and wasn't challenged in either victory. He led all but one lap of the 75-lap Super Late Model race and took the lead on the sixth lap of the crate feature, a race shortened to 27 from 50 laps because of a time limit. Clint Smith, the three-time and defending race winner, and Shane Clanton started on the front row of the Super Late Model feature, but McDowell quickly dispatched Smith on the first lap, then worked his way past Clanton after a two-lap, side-by-side duel. Over the rest of the 75 laps, no one could keep up with McDowell as he frequently built straightaway leads in rolling to the victory. Ronnie Johnson, who started 10th in the Super Late Model race, worked his way into second on a lap-49 restart and finished a straightaway behind McDowell at the finish. Smith was another straightaway behind in third at the checkered flag while Ray Cook and Brad Neat rounded out the top five on a track with fresh clay after off-season improvements. In qualifying, Johnson was 26th of 41 cars. Clanton held the second spot the first 49 laps, but a flat tire forced him out of a race where only 10 cars were running at the finish. Super Late Model feature: (1) Dale McDowell, (2) Ronnie Johnson, (3) Clint Smith, (4) Ray Cook, (5) Brad Neat, (6) Ronny Lee Hollingsworth, (7) Chris Jones, (8) Anthony Burroughs, (9) Justin McRee, (10) Nick Howell 1 - Dale McDowell, Chickamauga , Ga 2 - Ronnie Johnson, Chattanooga , Tn 3 - William Thomas, Phoenix City, Al 4 - Eiddie Rickman, Columbus , Ms 5 - John Liewellyn, Knoxville , Tn 6 - Don Jenkins, Kingston , Ga 7 - Shane Hmiel, Huntersville , Al 8 - Todd Hurst, Lineville , Al 9 - Glen Nix, Toccoa , Ga 10 - Jason Wilson, Margaret , Al 11 - Jeff Smith, Rocky Face, Ga This race was a real crashfest, with at least nine yellows and a red. Gathan Burns had a nasty flip, which also destroyed Johnny Stokes’ car. Youngster Dillon Crim, from Eastaboga, AL, at age 14, was the youngest-ever Bama Bash starter. In the crate B-Main, Chip Brindle, of Chatsworth, GA, crashed spectacularly after hitting the inner berm on the track. Brindle made the long trip from the rained-out NeSmith Series race in Florida to Green Valley, but was out after a single lap. Jeff Smith, of Rocky Face, GA, also made the trip, and finished 11th in the crate feature. Former track champion Tim Busha, of Boaz, Ala., led the final two laps of the 50-lap Limited Late Model feature to earn $5,000. Mark Rosner had led virtually all the way when a flat tire during a lap-48 caution period forced him off the track. Busha, who started 11th, inherited the lead and raced away from Mike Head in the final two laps. Head was disqualified, moving David Brannon up to second. Limited Late Model feature: (1) Tim Busha, (2) David Brannon, (3) Mark Haddon, (4) Brandon Brown, (5) Richard Ogle, (6) Larry Harrod, (7) T.J. Alford, (8) Mark Rosner, (9) Kenney Hall, (10) Jason Morris Saturday’s part of the Bama Bash didn’t get started until about 9:30 p.m., after the track’s lights went out. The show didn’t end until 2:30 a.m. - so late that they had to draw seven times to get a 50/50 cash winner. The National Late model Series show at Waycross was rained out, and will be moved to Mar. 8, with $4000 to win.
Former Cochran promoter Winford Johnson has returned, as Arlene Pittman steps down, and Johnson is making big changes to the track, including lower banking, sharper turns, and some new clay making the track a 3/8s mile. Racing starts Mar. 15 (practice Mar. 8), with the same classes. Some pictures of the changes at: www.cochrangaspeedway.com
Birmingham Mayor Larry Lankford has said that he wants racing to continue at the Birmingham Fairgrounds asphalt oval, and track operators Ray Tennyson and Joey Sims have prepared an improvement plan. “For the track, that means this year we will be putting down new asphalt and taking out the old football field in the infield. That will give teams a front stretch pit road and give fans a chance to watch pit stops in the future. Next year, we’re looking at installing SAFER barriers in the turns,” said Tennyson. The track has a wonderful old covered grandstand (pictured), but the asphalt is worn out, the walls are old highway barriers which destroy cars, and the infield has a football field complete with bleachers and a locker room building blocking the view. The pit road runs between the back stretch and front stretch, starting near turn three, and the haulers block the sightlines. “We’ve got to look at everything out there,” said Sims. “This facility can’t survive with just stock car racing. With all of the proposed changes, this will become a true multi-venue facility. We would like to have concerts here. We could have drifting events, SCCA events, and monster truck events. As far as racing goes, we haven’t been able to bring in major touring series because of our current pit road. With the new pit road, we can really look down the road and see what we can do with maybe bringing ARCA or Pro Cup to the track. Maybe even [NASCAR] Busch East or the Truck Series.” The future plans aren’t just big ones too. There are some smaller plans in the works as well, including construction of a 1/5th mile oval that can host go-kart, mini sprint, Legends and Bandolero races.” *?
At Birmingham International Raceway, Ken McFarland took the checkered flag in the Early Bird 125 Sunday. Josh Hamner crossed the finish line second with a flat right rear tire. Results: 1) #14 Ken McFarland 2) #38 Josh Hamner 3) #x2 Dennis Reno, Jr. 4) #4 Chris Whorton 5) #3 Chris Serio 6) #41 Gary Nix 7) #49 Jeff Fultz 8) #145 Billy Melvin 9) #89 Lee Hansard 10) #11 Clint Folsom 11) #91 Heath Hindman 12) #82 Donnie Wilson 13) #29 Andy Antinoro Ken McFarland shared victory lane with his spotter for the race, NASCAR legend Red Farmer. Only 13 cars showed up. Last year 19 cars competed in the Super Late Model portion of the event, with 23 drivers racing in the GAS race. (Thanks to www.speed51.com)
Shane Clanton’s season of misery - with only two top fives in 10 starts - continued at the Bama Bash, as he fell out again while contending for a win. Even worse, he’s lost his nick name and needs one to stick. World of Outlaws announcer Rick Eshelman is calling him the Locust Grove Lightning, and dirt racing rankings czar Steve Hixson wants to call him the Georgia Giant. The WoO website says he’s “Coconut.” We’re waiting for your suggestions. www.shaneclanton.com
The new ASA Southeastern Asphalt Tour, which starts the engines Sat., Mar. 22, at Mobile’s half-mile, already has 108 drivers registered, according to Stan Narrison. Registrations have come from Texas, Indiana, Florida, Alabama, Maine, Mississippi, and North and South Carolina for the 15-race season. www.asasoutheastasphalttour.com www.mobilespeedway.net
Probably the winner in 4m.com’s “Worst Race Track Name Contest” is GIT-R-DONE RACEWAY in BEAVER, OK. “DIRT TRACK RACING FAST AND FUN” says the track’s Wayne Williams. Another contender is Whynot, a track in MS.

Heavy rain on Saturday morning washed what was to be two shows on Saturday for the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series at East Bay (FL) Raceway Park. Both the Saturday afternoon and Saturday night races have been cancelled and will not be made up. Keith Nosbisch of Valrico, FL, won the 40-lap main event Friday. The Thursday night rainout brought about the scheduled two races on Saturday. A 40-lap race was scheduled to run on Saturday afternoon, and the 50-lap finale was scheduled for Saturday night. Jeff Fields of Aragon, GA, leaves East Bay Raceway Park with a two-point lead over Chip Brindle of Chatsworth, GA in the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National Touring point standings after the first three events of the 2008 season. The next event for the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series will be at Flomaton (AL) Speedway March 21-22, highlighted by a 75-lap $5,000-to-win main event. www.nesmithracing.com.

The Southern All Star sanctioned 50-lap event will pay $5,000 to the winner. The Ernest Young Memorial will be supported with racing in all divisions including Limited/Crate/Sportsman, Hobby, Mini Stock and Econo Bombers. Cleveland (TN) Speedway opens with the 13th Annual Southern All Star/Sonya's Used Cars Shamrock 60 on Saturday night March 15. The annual event will pay $7,500 to the winner. In support of the Super Late Models there will be racing in all regular divisions, Limited/Crate Late Models, A and B Hobby, Pony, and Front Runners. Grandstands will be $17 for adults. Kids 6-11 are $3, and under six are free. The pits will be $30. For the 2008 season Cleveland Speedway has been able to hold the line on the price for grandstand tickets for regular weekly racing. As it has been for a number of years adults are $12, kids 6-11 are $3 and under six are free. Due to a healthy increase in insurance pit passes will be $22 this year. The pricing for special events will vary and will be announced for each event. "Nobody has to tell us money is tight and or the price of gas and everything else is up," said Cleveland owner and promoter Monty Morrow who has seen fuel prices add another $400 a week to the cost of preparing the track. "Like everyone else we are doing the best we can and are trying to keep our prices as low we can. We were able to keep the grandstand ticket prices the same for another year, but we had to go up in the pits a couple of dollars." www.clevelandspeedway.com/

There’s a Sprint car driver and fan conflict coming up, and there is a very small supply of cars for two shows: July 26 Dixie ASCS Sprint cars July 26 Peach State USCS Sprint cars
Ladies – If the numbers are any indication, Sprint Car racing is still a guy's domain. But the ladies are starting to make some inroads. Out of Bonney Lake, WA, about as far from Tampa as one can get within the continental United States, 18-year-old Samantha Taylor made the cut for Saturday night's feature at East Bay and put her No. 17 entry in the 17th finishing position. With a total of 985 different drivers making at least one ASCS National Tour "A" Feature start since the series inception in 1992, Samantha became just the eleventh lady racer among those ranks. Stephanie Chappell (45 starts) and Natalie Sather (41 starts) have been the most frequent ASCS National feature starters in series history. Stephanie, younger sister to title-contending Zach, now hustles sponsors for another series while North Dakota's Natalie reigns as conqueror of the ASCS Midwest Region.
The O'Reilly Southern All Stars East Dirt Racing Series will roll into Cherokee Speedway for the 6th Edition of the $10,000.00 to win March Madness Super Late Model race on Sunday March 2nd. “March Madness is a great way for us to start off the season with a big event,” said Cherokee Speedway promoter Lennie Buff. "We made several changes to the speedway last season that gave the track new life. We had over 85 different feature winners last season. I think that says a lot about the competition and the racing we have to offer. The fans have gotten used to seeing side by side racing again, and we enjoyed bringing it back to them.” www.cherokee-speedway.com
The American Kart Racing Association (AKRA) Championship Dirt Series 2008 season opens Mar. 1 at Dexter Raceway (in Dexter, near Dublin). Dexter is "A Sanctioned WKA Master Track" with over 200 parking spots with electrical hookups, and a complete snack bar with some of the best southern cooking in the state. It’s a 1/5 mile clay track with a smooth fast racing surface. The 2007 AKRA champions will be honored at a banquet, and it sounds great: “Catering will be done by "Miss Pat's World Famous Down South Country Cooking.” Her menu will include Bar-B-Que, Chicken Pot Pie, Green Beans, Black Eyed Peas, Brunswick Stew, potato salad and rolls. For drinks she’s offering ice tea, lemonade, and coffee. For desert she’s fixing her famous homemade peach cobbler and homemade banana pudding. Come hungry.” To reserve banquet tickets, call the AKRA office at 704.764.8138. For track info: Contact Carl Williams (478) 875-FLAG. Fans seeking a taste of asphalt Super Late Models can see them at Nashville’s fairgrounds Mar. 28-29, as the CRA stars compete. It pays $1500 to win.
Ron Hedger, in NSSN, reports that Wisconsin’s Bob Schafer saw 269 races at 89 tracks in 2007. That was 62,000 miles in a Honda Civic: $5,277 for gas, $2,844 for admission tickets. “The crowds continue to dwindle and the shows continue to get longer,” says Schafer, “with more buying pit passes at many tracks than buy tickets to watch.” Bob Litton, of Iowa City, saw 135 shows, and says his favorite was a November race at Cleveland, TN. Hedger keeps count of race chasers, while our buddy Randy Lewis leads in track chasing (counting only newly-visited tracks).
