The winingest driver in BGN history, Sam Ard, had 22 wins in just 92 starts, and many many more in short track races, before a career ending head injury at Rockingham in 1984. Ard was signing autographs in between taking time out in his wheelchair to rest. Pictures at http://larre.smugmug.com/gallery/4195132/1#P-1-12

NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series drivers had a two-day test session at Atlanta Motor Speedway this week. Terry Cook laid down a fast lap of 31.493 seconds, (171.467 mph) followed by Todd Bodine, Chad McCumbee, Jack Sprague and Ron Hornaday Jr. Teams are preparing for the March 7 American Commercial Lines 200 at AMS, held under the lights immediately following Georgia Power Sprint Cup Qualifying. Mike Skinner, the defending ACL 200 winner, was seventh quick with a lap of 31.795 seconds (169.838 mph). Tickets to the American Commercial Lines 200 Craftsman Truck Series race, as well as the entire Kobalt Tools 500 event weekend, are available by calling the AMS ticket office at (877) 9-AMS-TIX (877-926-7849), 770-946-4211 or by visiting www.atlantamotorspeedway.com Joey Clanton, who had a taste of Craftsman Truck Racing in 2007, will be a full-time driver for Roush Racing in 2008, with sponsorship from Zaxby’s. He’s 35 years old, and lives in Tyrone with wife Brandi and two children. He’s also the owner of two Zaxby’s Restaurants south of Atlanta. He’s a 1999 mechanical engineering graduate of GA Tech, and is the second truck series driver with a degree (Brendan Gaughan, with a Georgetown degree, is the other one). Clanton began his racing career at birth, as the Son of legendary dirt track racer and hero Billy Clanton. In 2000, he started racing in the ASA Series, winning the championship in 2002, and repeating in 2003 with nine wins. Clanton, who grew up racing Legends cars around Atlanta Motor Speedway’s frontstretch quarter-mile oval, is among those looking to build a solid foundation for the 2008 season. “It’s great to be back at Atlanta Motor Speedway, since this is my home track,” said an optimistic Clanton. “I’ve got a great group of guys behind me who are committed to winning. There have always been great opportunities here at Atlanta, and I’m hoping to win one for the home crowd.” At a meet and greet this week, several series drivers were concerned about a new engine restrictor plate and a smaller fuel cell rule. Driver Rick Crawford talked about his son, Adam, who is racing super late models at Mobile, AL, and Five Flags, FL, and will be in some ASA Southeast Asphalt Tour shows this summer. He was rookie of the year at Mobile in 2006. Both owners of the Wood Bros. Racing will have sons Keven and Jon in the Truck Series, sharing the No. 21 Ford. www.zaxbys.com/racing/joey_clanton.html

---- ---- ---- ---- Would it be possible for you to make an appeal, on behalf of The Northeast Georgian newspaper in Cornelia, for pictures of or at the Hollywood Speedway in Habersham County? I have several good photos of the old Habersham Speedway on Dicks Hill, but none of the Hollywood track. Hollywood Speedway held its grand opening in May 1956 and only ran for about two weeks. I need them for an upcoming special section, in which I plan to feature the two local tracks, while also mentioning the old Gainesville Looper Speedway (with photos). I welcome any photos of the three tracks mentioned (either of events, or the facilities themselves). Rob Moore, Editor The Northeast Georgian P.O.
