SPLMS Schedule Season is Called Off After a Few Races
Economy and a Crowded Field of Tours Hurts First Year Series
By Mike Twist
After just two stand-alone events were held, the Southern Pro Late Model Series has suspended their racing schedule.

The series was born prior to this season as an alternative to several other Pro Late Model Tours such as the Georgia Asphalt Series and the ASA Southeast Asphalt Tour. The force behind the creation of the SPLMS was Vince Whitmire, who had previously been involved with the GAS Series before a change of ownership and resulting dispute late last season [click here to revisit that story].

However, Whitmire's idea never really got a chance to get far off the ground in 2009. With only so many cars willin...

Lanier National Speedway announces MAJOR change to Late Model Racing

BRASELTON GA - Terry Roberts, GM of Lanier National Speedway announced today that Pro Late Model racing at Lanier National Speedway will no longer be a NASCAR sanctioned points race at LNS. This announcement comes just one day before the season opening Late Model race on Saturday April 25th 2009.

This move is in response to the NASCAR minimum age requirement of 16 to run in an event sanctioned by NASCAR. This move by Lanier National Speedway will allow younger drivers already participating in the Pro Late Model series to participate on a weekly basis at LNS and challenge for the $25,000 in bonus money that is on the line this year at LNS.

“We have such fantastic young talent around this area in motorsports,” said Terry Roberts. “Our kids here start young in Quarter Midget, t...

Travis Pennington Takes Win at Penton Speedway

by Jack Smith - UDLMCS Media

Dana Eiland was running away from the United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series field and headed to a certain win at Penton Speedway until a tire went flat with seven laps to go. Travis Pennington inherited the lead and held off Terrance Nowell for the win.

Jason Fitzgerald, forced to the rear of the field after a lap 2 altercation, rode his his Bobby Labonte #7 race car back to third place and was threatening the leaders in the closing laps.

UDLMCS points leader Mark Whitener has to sit out tonight's race after blowing his engine during practice. He said simply, "That's racing".

ASA Late Models at Watermelon Capital Speedway

Wes Burton and Rob Dubnecay to kick off 2009 season at Watermelon Capital Speedway In 2009, look for the duo of Wes Burton and Rob Dubnecay to make several appearances in both ASALMS Challenge and ASALMS South events. Burton is no stranger to the ASA Late Models Series as he has competed on a part-time basis since 2006. However, it will be the first appearance for Minnesota’s Rob Dubnecay with Ron Varney’s ASA Late Model Series.

In 2008, Wes Burton had his best year to date while piloting a late model. He racked up 5 top 5’s and 9 top 10’s in the 12 events in which he competed, including a $4,000 to win Super Late Model race at Southern National Raceway Park in Kenly, NC. The 2008 season also marked Burton’s first appearance in a super late model on dirt, where he won a heat rac...

Pollard Takes Inaugural CRA Super Series South Event

Cordele, GA (April 4, 2009) - Being the leader of Inaugural CRA Super Series South event, the Watermelon 125 at Watermelon Capital Speedway, was not a good place.

Four different times lightening struck different drivers while leading, resulting in new leaders, so Bubba Pollard had to be worried when he took the lead for the second time on lap 120 after the leaders spun while racing side by side. But he hung on for the last five laps to take the win of the historic event. Korey Ruble finished second, Ryan Sieg third, Justin Drawdy fourth and Danny Bagwell fifth.

"We had a real good car early, then the tires went away, or I ran them a little too hard, and after they cooled the car came back and we got faster as the race was going on, we seemed to be faster at the end" An e...

TJ Reaid takes win at “The Melon”

By Scott Pinner

CORDELE GA- In a race that was slowed by unexpected swimming expeditions, the 2009 GAS season got underway Saturday night as Acworth Georgia’s own, TJ Reaid took home the checkered flag in Cordele. Reaid felt the heat all night up front and worked the low part of the 3/8 mile asphalt holding off Shane Sawyer and Casey Roderick. Reaid led the most laps of the 125 lap feature to take the checkered flag and the first win in the 2009 GAS season.

Some unexpected swimming took place when cars left the race track in turn three and wound up in chest deep water off the backside of the track. The Cordele and south Georgia area had seen record rainfall in the week prior to the race and drivers who had the unfortunate ride off the back straight into turn three put ...

Ivedent Lloyd Wins at Golden Isles

UDLMCS Media

Ivedent Lloyd set fast time, started from the pole and was never challenged after the first lap, winning the 1st Annual United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series Georgia State Late Model Championship at Golden Isles Speedway.

The weather finally cooperated on Sunday after a dismal two days of rain delays, and after heats and a B-Main, 24 cars were able to take the green for the 60 lap feature event.

Jason Fitzgerald ran in second much of the race, but was forced to the pits after contact with another car midway through the event led to mechanical issues. He got back in the running but could do no better than 12th.

GEORGIA STOCK CAR RACING MAR. 12-19, 2009

Reporting from Las Vegas: Two weeks ago I finished my tour of the top dirt tracks with visits to Las Vegas and Fort Worth.

Las Vegas’ dirt track is part of a huge racing complex including the NASCAR track, drag strip, and asphalt short track. On a cold Wednesday night, over 50 USAC and CRA wingless sprint cars, and about 40 midgets competed on a very dry slick track. The big sprint cars put on a great show, in part due to inverting eight in the heat races.

On an even colder Thursday night, a near capacity crowd watched the World of Outlaws winged sprint cars put on a typical show, fast but boring. All three heat races, a dash, and a last chancec race produced zero passes and follow-the-leader. In the feature, Donny Schatz sta...
